I thought artists were selling them at their concerts. Last night at the Stylistics concert I went to, they had the greatest hits as well as their new release available for sale. Fact is, Prince has only has had a few albums that really sold like gangbusters to the general public. Example: Sign O' The Times may be the greatest album ever created, but (as you say) it "failed to connect" with the masses. Compare it's sales to other albums of 1987. Your argument is that SOTT sold poorly because of lack of quality. Really?

The truth is, music business is a business. Prince has ALWAYS been a better artist than a promo guy. He just doesn't seem to give a shit about it. I mean, a smart business person doesn't quietly release Around The World in a Day right in the middle of Purple Rain mania. A smart business person waits a while and hypes it up like Michael did with Bad or Madonna did with True Blue. A smart business person picks better singles, not "If I was Your Girlfriend." Prince does as he always has....whatever he wants.

2. I think Art Official Age is more esoteric and "out there" than you give it credit for. It is a bit of a concept album. I mean, how commerical is it to have spoken word affirmations in the middle of the album? Not very.

Prince still makes albums from start to finish. Pop stars just make a collection of singles designed to sell. Then again, Prince has always been more of an artist than a pop star.

Not to mention he bashes the current pop radio scene with the artifical cage song.

I think the 14 unreleased tracks are the album itself, and the rest just thrown on in a backfired promo stunt.
