The album, again produced mainly by Narada Michael Walden, included Aretha's first No #1 Pop single since "Respect" in 1967 with the vibrant "I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)", a duet with George Michael. Aretha also yielded three other hit singles: "Jimmy Lee", "Rock-A-Lott" and a hard rock cover of The Rolling Stones' classic, "Jumpin' Jack Flash". Following on from Aretha's first-ever Platinum record, Who's Zoomin' Who?, Aretha was quickly certified Gold after only several weeks. Before going out of print, the album had sold approximately 900,000 copies in the United States alone. Franklin's vocal from "Rock-A-Lott" was sampled extensively in the 49ers' 1990 hit "Touch Me", while her version of "Jumpin' Jack Flash" was the title song for the film comedy starring Whoopi Goldberg. The album is noteworthy for the striking cover, which was Andy Warhol's final work before his death in early 1987. Treat yourself to Aretha: her most energized release for Arista to date, and see why Aretha Franklin has been, is, and always will be the absolute undisputed Queen of Soul. Liner Notes by Alex Henderson The album includes the chart hits, "Gimme Your Love", “It Isn’t, It Wasn’t, It Ain’t Never Gonna Be”, “Through The Storm” and “If I Ever A Love There Was” Through The Storm is an album by legendary soul diva Aretha Franklin, released on Arista Records in the spring of 1989. Following the success of the Grammy-winning "Who's Zoomin' Who", featuring the monstrous "Freeway of Love," Aretha was paired with George Michael, Annie Lennox, Larry Graham, and Keith Richards, on the self-titled "Aretha." Garnering several hits, Aretha and her respective producers (Narada Michael Walden, Arif Mardin, and Jerry Knight, to name a few) decided to continue the same pattern with "Through The Storm". One would have thought that the matching of "The Godfather of Soul" with "The Queen of Soul" would be eventful but Franklin and Brown on "Gimme Your Love" makes one ponder what the two could have done in their prime. The song, unfortunately, is nothing extraordinary, as are the talents involved. This is a must for any Aretha Franklin collector….. I remember a video being made for the song. Since Brown was behind bars at the time, only old footage of him was available to go with new footage filmed for Franklin.

The Aretha MegaMix finally getting properly remastered on CD! Yay! Arista released it on the CD Maxi single for "Jimmy Lee" back in the 80s but it was a vinyl rip. And a bad one at that! "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! All you haters will see!" - Kitbradley

Available: November 25, 2014 . Largely unheard, criminally undocumented, but at their core, utterly revolutionary, the recordings of the diverse North American Aboriginal community will finally take their rightful place in our collective history in the form of Native North America (Vol. 1): Aboriginal Folk, Rock, and Country 1966–1985. An anthology of music that was once near-extinct and off-the-grid is now available for all to hear, in what is, without a doubt, Light In The Attic’s most ambitious and historically significant project in the label’s 12-year journey. . Native North America (Vol. 1) features music from the Indigenous peoples of Canada and the northern United States, recorded in the turbulent decades between 1966 to 1985. It represents the fusion of shifting global popular culture and a reawakening of Aboriginal spirituality and expression. The majority of this material has been widely unavailable for decades, hindered by lack of distribution or industry support and by limited mass media coverage, until now. You’ll hear Arctic garage rock from the Nunavik region of northern Quebec, melancholy Yup’ik folk from Alaska, and hushed country blues from the Wagmatcook First Nation reserve in Nova Scotia. You’ll hear echoes of Neil Young, Velvet Underground, Leonard Cohen, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Johnny Cash, and more among the songs, but injected with Native consciousness, storytelling, poetry, history, and ceremony. . The stories behind the music presented on Native North America (Vol. 1) range from standard rock-and-roll dreams to transcendental epiphanies. They have been collected with love and respect by Vancouver-based record archaeologist and curator Kevin “Sipreano” Howes in a 15-year quest to unearth the history that falls between the notes of this unique music. Tirelessly, Howes scoured obscure, remote areas for the original vinyl recordings and the artists who made them, going so far as to send messages in Inuktitut over community radio airwaves in hopes that these lost cultural heroes would resurface. . With cooperation and guidance from the artists, producers, family members, and behind the scenes players, Native North America (Vol. 1) sheds real light on the painful struggles and deep traditions of the greater Indigenous community and the significance of its music. The songs speak of joy and spirituality, but also tell of real tragedy and strife, like that of Algonquin/Mohawk artist Willy Mitchell, whose music career was sparked by a bullet to the head from the gun of a trigger-happy police officer, or those of Inuk singer-songwriter Willie Thrasher, who was robbed of his family and traditional Inuit culture by the residential school system. . Considering the financially motivated destruction of our environment, the conservative political landscape, and corporate bottom-line dominance, it’s bittersweet to report that the revolutionary songs featured on Native North America hold as much meaning today as when they were originally recorded. Dedicated to legendary Métis singer-songwriter and poet Willie Dunn, featured on the anthology but who sadly passed away during its making, Native North America (Vol. 1) is only the beginning. A companion set featuring a crucial selection of folk, rock, and country from the United States’ Lower 48 and Mexico is currently in production.

• Now, for the first time ever, "Exposure”, the debut album from EXPOSE has been digitally remastered and expanded. • Originally released in 1987, "Exposure” (US #16) reached gold sales status in the US, re-introduced dance music to US radio stations after nearly a decade, and was responsible for crossing over the Freestyle sound to a broader audience. • A total of seven singles were lifted from the album including the blockbuster hits ‘Point Of No Return’ (US #5, 1987), ‘Come Go With Me’ (US #5, 1987), ‘Let Me Be The One’ (US # 7, 1987), and the chart-topping smash ‘Seasons Change’ (US #1, 1987). • EXPOSÉ were the first female group to have four Top 10 singles from a debut album hit the Billboard Hot 100 chart. • This 2 CD deluxe edition features 29 tracks including the original 10-song album alongside 19 bonus tracks, 8 of which appear on CD for the first time. • The bonus material on this collection features all the single versions, B-sides, remixes, and alternate versions that were released during the promotion of the original album. • Fans of the PWL sound will be thrilled about the inclusion of two of the rarest tracks in the production stable's repertoire. Both the UK 7" Remix and UK Extended Remix of ‘Point Of No Return’ make their CD debut on this collection. • The CD booklet contains lyrics, a personal message from EXPOSE; members Gioia, Jeanette and Ann, comprehensive sleeve notes including a brand new interview with the group and track annotations by Lewis A. Martineé who wrote all the songs and produced the original album. UK pop fans take note! Sun Ra is one of the most respected, and perhaps most misunderstood creative minds in jazz music. To commemorate what would have been Ra’s 100th birthday, we’ve teamed up with Art Yard for a very special release. In The Orbit Of Ra is a new collection presented by the longest serving member of the Arkestra and current bandleader, Marshall Allen. Bringing together Sun Ra highights from over 25 years of music, the album is the first internationally released compilation to provide an introduction to the music of Sun Ra, all mastered from the original tapes. . In The Orbit Of Ra will be available on 2CD, 2LP and digital formats. Physical formats feature full interview with Marshall Allen along with rare and previously unpublished photos by Val Wilmer. Two years ago, we decided to begin remastering the jewels of the Blue Note catalog in hi-def resolutions of 96k and 192k. In order to develop a guiding artistic philosophy for this delicate endeavor, we donned our lab coats, ran dozens of sonic experiments and carefully referenced every generation of our reissues. Ultimately, we decided that our goal would be to protect the original intentions of the artists, producers and engineers who made these records and that, in the case of pre-digital-era albums, these intentions were best represented by the sound and feel of their first-edition vinyl releases. Working with a team of dedicated and groovy engineers, we found a sound that both captured the feel of the original records while maintaining the depth and transparency of the master tapes... the new remasters are really cool! . While these new versions will become available in Digital Hi Def, CD and the Mastered for iTunes formats, the allure of vinyl records is WAY too potent to ignore. This year, Blue Note - along with our friends at Universal Music Enterprises - is launching a major 75th Anniversary Vinyl Initiative that is dedicated to the proposition that our catalog should be readily available at a low cost - featuring high quality pressings and authentic reproductions of Blue Note's iconic packaging. Beginning in March 2014, we'll start rolling out five remastered vinyl reissues every month. Although this program begins in celebration of Blue Note's 75th Anniversary, our catalog runs so deep that we will faithfully be reissuing five albums a month for many years to come! —Don Was, President, Blue Note Records . Maysa - Internacional (5 CD box) . In exactly 20 year career, Maysa did everything. Transitioned with aplomb and talent for music from the 50s to 70s as singular performer and also as a songwriter. Her discography, spread generously for various record labels, has been relaunched in virtually every CD. But Discobertas is proud to bring together for the first time several pearls of her impressive international career, plus rarities compact, concerts and festivals that tell a great story of success. Discs, as always in reissues produced by Marcelo Froes, with remastered audio, plus fact sheets and illustrations. . The set features the Columbia album Maysa Sings Songs Before Dawn – in English, with backings by Jack Pleis – and the United Artists' record The Sound Of Love – in Portuguese, with backing by Simonetti. And the 3CDs feature 47 more rare tracks from the late 50s to the early 70s – including French, Italian, and Portuguese singles and Eps – plus rare Brazilian singles, soundtrack work, and more! This past week, MOTOWN quietly released the expanded version of Diana Ross' 1977 album "BABY IT'S ME". The album, which had a brief CD release about 25 years ago, is one of the most-sought-after among Ross fans, as it has been credited as one of the best in her solo career. However, the album is only available in a digital format via iTunes at this time, and no word on whether it will be released in CD format in the future, as has been all her other Motown albums in the past decade. All of these reissues were so critically acclaimed upon their release some 10 years back. And most have been sold out for a long, long time. Now they're back and better than ever!
.
The box set version - Absolute Originals - includes in-depth liner notes by rock critic extraordinaire Ben Fong-Torres of Rolling Stone fame, and photos by Barry Wolman and Didi Zill, both of whom were there to document Creedence Clearwater Revival back in the day. There is also an essay by Steve Hoffman. Additionally, the box includes an eighth record of choice songs cut at 45 RPM including rare mixes of both "Bad Moon Rising" and "Proud Mary."
.
Unquestionably one of the greatest American rock bands ever, Creedence Clearwater Revival will best be remembered for their unique bayou sound popularized in songs like "Proud Mary" and "Green River." Although their music evoked the raw, gospel-tinged sound of the rural South, Doug Clifford, Stu Cook, and Tom and John Fogerty actually hailed from El Cerrito, California, a small town near Berkeley.
.
The 1968 release of the band's self-titled debut album Creedence Clearwater Revival paralleled the flowering of the San Francisco music scene, but the Creedence phenomenon had little in common with the "San Francisco Sound." That first LP contained rock standards such as Dale Hawkins's "Susie Q" and Screamin' Jay Hawkins' "I Put a Spell on You," as well as original material by John Fogerty, who was to emerge as one of rock's most influential songwriters.
With the release of their second album, Bayou Country, which was home to such classics as “Proud Mary” and “Born on the Bayou,” it became evident that Creedence had an uncanny knack for writing hits. Third album Green River and songs like "Bad Moon Rising" and the title track and fourth album Willy and the Poor Boys and cuts like "Down On The Corner" and "Fortunate Son" propelled the band even further towards greatness.
.
Fifth album Cosmo's Factory, the name drummer Doug "Cosmo" Clifford gave CCR's rehearsal studio because so many hits were created there, lived up to its namesake in spades. Cosmo’s Factory was the fourth and biggest of the string of five Top 10 albums CCR released in 1969 and 1970. Featured here are staples like “Travelin’ Band,” “Lookin’ Out My Back Door,” “Who’ll Stop the Rain,” and “Run Through the Jungle.”
.
After four years of nearly nonstop performing CCR had become the number one American rock and roll attraction and they sound as polished and tight as ever on their criminally underrated sixth album Pendulum (1970). Of the two hit singles from the release, "Hey Tonight" and "Have You Ever Seen The Rain," the latter's slower ballad format clearly suggests that the band was exploring new styles, including a developing emphasis on instrumentals.
.
Pared down to a trio of John Fogerty, Stu Cook and Doug Clifford, 1972's Mardi Gras was Creedence Clearwater Revival's seventh and final full-length release and it finds the group splitting creative duties evenly for the very first time. Home to the classic John Fogerty singles "Sweet Hitch-Hiker" and "Someday Never Comes" as well as a great cover of the standard "Hello Mary Lou." Due to band turmoil and mounting financial and legal issues, CCR disbanded shortly after the Mardi Gras tour.

To be a woman singing your own blues and soul songs in 1960s Texas was a rare thing. To do so while brandishing a left-handed Stratocaster and bashing out hard-edged licks was even rarer. Yet that’s just what Barbara Lynn did, inspired by Guitar Slim, Jimmy Reed, Elvis Presley and Brenda Lee. And it was a hit: her 1962 debut single, “You’ll Lose A Good Thing,” recorded with session musicians including Dr. John, gave her an R&B chart Number One and a Billboard chart Top 10 hit. . It was a path that Lynn chose at elementary school in 1940s Beaumont, Texas, when she told her mother she wanted to play guitar. “I decided that playing piano was a little bit too common, you know what I mean?” says Lynn in the new liner notes. “You’d always see a lady or a little girl sitting at a piano. I decided I wanted to play something more unexpected, so that’s when I got interested in learning to play the guitar.” Self-taught, first on the ukulele and then on a guitar, Lynn formed her first group, Barbara Lynn and Her Idols, while still at school and soon took the local scene by storm. Hers was a powerful talent in a petite package, a performer who could stand up against the best–even as a teenager. . Spotted while performing, underage, in Louisiana, she was offered the chance to record her own material, songs that filtered the experience of being a black Texan teen with power, feel, and guts. Ten of the twelve tracks on her debut album were her own compositions. “It took a lot of time,” Lynn remembers of the recording process, “but we got ‘Good Thing,’ we got our hit. I loved it. I loved meeting the new musicians; a lot of the guys who played on that record became friends. And seeing how the engineers worked and how they produced the sounds, all of that was really interesting to me.” . The success of that single took Lynn out on the road with the likes of Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight, BB King, Supremes, Chuck Berry, Guitar Slim, and The Temptations. BB King even wrote a letter to Lynn’s mother to tell her what a talented daughter she’d raised. She appeared at the Apollo Theater, she was twice on American Bandstand, and one of her songs, “Oh Baby (We’ve Got A Good Thing Goin’)” was covered by The Rolling Stones. . Though she was a precocious performer, hers is a talent that came to full bloom on Here Is Barbara Lynn, her 1968 album produced by Huey P. Meaux and originally released on Atlantic Records. The record was conceived as an introduction of Lynn’s prodigious talents, her deeply felt guitar playing, her gutsy soulful singing skills, and her songwriting prowess. It collected her early hit and a raft of new songs, each packed with Lynn’s passion and fire. Yet the introduction to her world–now reissued by Light In The Attic–largely proved to be her swansong. She married in 1970, aged 28, had three children, and largely retired from the music industry for most of the ‘70s and ‘80s. Now touring again, she’s amused to think of her 46 year-old album gaining new fans. “I hear this album, and it seems like… it seems like the old times to me,” she says. "I don’t know, it’s strange to know it’s coming out again. It is going to be a wild, first time thing for me, like going back in time. But I’m excited to see what happens.”

Various Artists: FUNKY CHRISTMAS CD . Issued on Atlantic Records’ Cotillion imprint, Funky Christmas is part of a venerable recording tradition: the holiday compilation featuring performances by a variety of artists from a single label, Phil Spector’s A Christmas Gift for You being the most prominent example. But Funky Christmas actually inhabits two traditions. In addition to being a themed label compilation, it’s a new-artist sampler. All six of the acts represented on it had issued their first Cotillion LPs earlier in 1976 and Funky Christmas was a way to keep those acts in the public eye. The set itself is a moving audio feast, a platter heaped high with holiday standards (eight), newly composed Christmas songs (four), ballads and uptempo cuts, spirited vocal showcases and groovalicious instrumentals. The key cuts, or the elephant in the room, are the brace of tunes from Luther Vandross, then just 25 and fronting his namesake quintet (it was signed to Cotillion as Luther), which had made its debut only weeks earlier. Due to a quirk in licensing, this collection is about the only place you can find any recordings by Luther, and their two songs are the clear highlight of the collection. But the rest of the roster is top shelf, too; future Spinner John Edwards contributes two tracks produced by Stax legend David Porter, Southern soul star Margie Joseph sings two songs produced by Motown mainstay Lamont Dozier, Hall of Fame vocal group the Impressions stretch out on the album’s two longest tracks, and soul-jazz saxmen Lou Donaldson and Willis Jackson trot out some tasty licks on two tracks each. CD debut, with notes by Gene Sculatti and added photos. Have yourself a Funky Christmas! . 1. LUTHER: May Christmas Bring You Happiness 2. JOHN EDWARDS: The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire) 3. WILLIS JACKSON: I’ll Be Home for Christmas 4. MARGIE JOSEPH: Christmas Gift 5. LOU DONALDSON: Jingle Bells 6. IMPRESSIONS: Silent Night 7. IMPRESSIONS: I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus 8. JOHN EDWARDS: White Christmas 9. LOU DONALDSON: What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve 10. LUTHER: At Christmas Time 11. MARGIE JOSEPH: Feeling Like Christmas 12. WILLIS JACKSON: Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas

George Benson‘s 1980 album Give Me The Night will be reissued by Music On Vinyl. The Quincy Jones produced record spawned a transatlantic top ten hit single with the irresistible title track, and Love X Love repeated the feat in the UK reaching number ten. The album would go on to win a number of Grammy awards including Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for Benson. This reissue sees the record pressed on 180g vinyl with original insert included. It is released on 1 December 2014. Nick Ashford was someone I greatly admired, had the honor of knowing, and was the real-life inspiration for Cowboy Curtis' hair. RIP Nick. - Pee Wee Herman

Yeah i was hoping this was going to happen, not only did it need it, it DESERVES it! Interesting thing though some of the early pressings of the VINYL back in 1987 had 3 other girls doing vocals on some tracks, the late Sandee was one of them. I don't think that the expanded cd will have that original stuff, sadly, because it is interesting to see the change and why Gioia and jeanette and Ann took this album mainstream. Also interesting and not sure if people know, The Girls did take their managers Martinee being part of it, to court to fight him to USE the name Expose while touring, though Martinee wrote most of the hits and all of the first record, managed them, produced them, when the 3 got together again and toured they were sued for the name, they went to court and WON! because they were the ones that made them hits, a very tough ruling to get as you all know when you dont own your music. "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

I'm planning to get this when it's released since I've always liked this album. The original 3 women who first recorded Point of No Return were Sandee Casanas, Laurie Miller and Ale Lorenzo. Seeing that the expanded rerelease will include the original 1985 version, it's interesting comparing that version to to the one done by the classic lineup.

Yeah, I see "original 1985 version", which is nice to see included, knowing the lineup change.

Cherry Pop also released 2 CD deluxe editions of Taylor Dayne's Can't Fight Fate and Soul Dancing.
Nice to see this label paying homage to these talented Arista diva's and their contribution to pop and dance music. [Edited 12/3/14 8:47am]
