She was huge from what I remember, whether a fan or not, it's admirable what she achieved for so many years like Whitney did. Would love to see a male artist list as well if it's out

I feel like Adele was bigger in 2011 commercially though Rihanna had more number ones

Madonna was the most popular artist those years, her and Whitney, sounds accurate to me from what I remember.

I know, I know, I've been there and witnessed first hand. and yes, I still can dig some of Madonnas older songs

but I don't see her as the icon like so many others do, just a bunch of very succesful nice lightweight MTV dance&pop tunes in the 80s, that's Madonna for me. and the statistics above confirm that, hehe

i dont agree with mariah for 1997 either, her album may have been huge but lauryn hill's presence was clearly bigger. i know mariah was extremely successful commercially but i just dont remember her really dominating the scene at any period. i dont remember her ever being THAT CHICK, the one every girl wanted to be, her face on all the magazines, dominating award shows, ect.

Don't you mean 1998 - the year 'The Mideducation of Lauryn Hill' was released ( although it's nice to see Brandy on the list)

I would also probably put Nelly Furtado for 2006 'Loose' was huge! and maybe Gwen for 2004 and Janet for 2001.

She was big from late 95 to mid 96 rather than all of 1996, I guess Toni Braxton filled the second half well.

In 1997, it was quiet for divas but she broke records when she dropped Honey and the singles kept coming though there were no commercial releases. Janet did put out Velvet Rope and Madonna put out Evita, but Janet had a slow start until things picked up with Together Again, and Evita was a soundtrack that sold well but took awhile to do so.

I agree Miseducation was released end of summer 1998, but Brandy was also hard to get away from. Music, movies, tv, she was everywhere.

I thought 'Loose' wasn't as big in the US as Canada, but it's definitely one of the best albums of 2006 and very underrated.

For almost every year on this list Madge was there. All the others came and went, but she stayed.

Being number 1 in 1985 and having one of the biggest tour ever in 2012 is an achievement nobody else on this list made.

All the others are dead, on medication or never heard from again. lol

Beyonce

Top 10 Singles: “Drunk In Love” ft. Jay Z (8 weeks)
Total Weeks In The Top 10: 8
Number 1 Albums: Beyonce (2 weeks)
RIAA Disc Certifications: “Drunk In Love” ft. Jay Z (platinum), Beyonce (2x platinum)
Records: Forbes named Beyonce the most powerful celebrity of the year, and Billboard declared her the highest paid African American artist of all time. Forbes predicts that Beyonce’s On The Run Tour with Jay Z may wrap up to be the second most successful tour of all time.
Awards: MTV Video Music Award for Best Collaboration (“Drunk In Love”), Best Video With A Social Message (“Pretty Hurts”), Best Cinematography (“Pretty Hurts”), Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award,
Major Pop Culture Moments: Still riding high on the charts with her“surprise album” from the previous December, Beyonce and husband Jay Z opened the Grammys with a sultry performance of “Drunk In Love.” Despite rumors of marital difficulties and family problems with sister Solange, Bey and Jay ruled the summer with the smash On The Run Tour, which was also made into a highly rated HBO concert special. Her epic 16-minute medley at the MTV VMAs in August, as well as a surprise appearance at NYC’s Global Citizen’s Concert in September, reminded us that she’s the current queen.

Who was SO last year? Find out…

This is a good example of contrived hype for the Beehive citizens to consider. The HBO Special featuring the "On The Run" Tour was not a success. The numbers were abysmal by television industry standards. There were a FEW articles on the disappointing numbers. If I recall one article had written that even old reruns of "The Big Bang Theory" had more viewers than the first live showing of the concert. This really doesn't matter because I'm sure they were well paid regardless of the eventual viewership. I just wanted to point out an example of undeserved industry hype.

The tour itself is doing pretty good though isn't it?

However, Beyonce being the highest paid black artist in music history is pretty hard to believe... at least for me.

They probably mean LIVING black artist. And not to discredit her if it's true, but I would find it more believable if her and Jay'z annual earnings makes them highest paid, I don't know about individually though she's done well the past few years, and it's not coming to me who else besides Rihanna would make a candidate.

Living, I would find it more believable but for some reason I doubt that's what they meant to say.

I know Rihanna had quite a string of #1 hits from 2010-2012 but I wouldn't consider her one of the highest paid black artists.

EDIT: Not that I would know but I find it hard to believe that Mariah dominated all those years in the 90s. 90/91-94, yeah but those other years I feel like there are better candidates especially in 2005. I don't know for sure but that's what I feel.

I also think Janet should have at least one more year to her name and that Adele was bigger and a lot more impressive in 2011 than Rihanna was.

I was disputing the "highly rated" part about the HBO Special not the tour itself. The viewership ratings weren't high.

Madonna earned over 150 million dollars in 2012 and Beyonce was down the list. Beyonce made the most money this year and she did not even make as much as Madonna in 2012. Ya'll need to stop feeding into her PR hype. There is no way Beyonce is the highest paid living singer and she damn sure is not the highest paid in history!

I disagree with some of the placements on this list. I think Janet needs to be listed in 2001. I also would list Adele at 2011. I also would like to know what criteria are they using. Are they going by just album singles? Are they going by number one singles? Some of these placements would not exist if they were strictly going by number ones and album sells...just saying. I was pleased that Brandy was listed. Her commercial success and album sells are always underestimated.

nod I totally agree. I would say that she is probably the most hyped up and talked about female singer of this year, and that's all thanks to her powerful and well paid PR machine making sure she stays being talked about in the media while making her seem like this larger than life person who has achieved world domination.
