James brown, Michael, Prince, even The Police. He's kinda generic even though I really enjoyed him on SNL, moreso then Justin who I think got Host of the Year in most people's minds. But I'll confess, one night I was listening to that song that goes "...I should've bought you flowers..." and for a moment I got it.

Yeah I agree. I've only seen tidbits of him on SNL but I will go back and watch as much as I can on Youtube. The song you're talking about is When I was your man. That's a nice song. I agree that all of the folks that you mentioned are his most obvious influences, especially Prince. It seems like nearly every ballad Bruno does has hints of Prince all over it smile

^That would be "When I was Your Man".

I get what you mean but unlike Beyonce, Bruno is a relatively new artist so he can get away with showing where his inspiration comes from for his first few albums though I would love to see where he goes after breaking out on his own and presenting his own flavor (while keeping it old school of course).

Same here. That should be a fun time for the diehards and soon to be diehards smile

I think Bruno has great stage persona. I would like to see more musicianship in his recordings that I know he is capable of. Too much of modern pop music is too dumbed down for the masses. I think these guys found a balance between slick pop and great playing.

He has the same problem Beyonce has; He hasn't gone beyond his influences. Now boy can sing and he isn't too hard on the eyes, but...

I agree that he hasnt gone beyond his influences, at least not yet at this early point in his career. I do think he has the potential to go beyond them at some point, maybe later down the road. As long he keeps at it, keeps growing, keeps learning. He definitely has his influences (James Brown, MJ, Prince, The Police, Bruce Springsteen, etc) and he can play and sing a variety of musical genres. But as he continues to grow, both personally and artistically and if he gives himself the freedom to experiment with different ideas, and freely express himself, he just may go beyond his influences at some point. The talent and potential to become truly great is there, but whether or not he fully realizes/utilizes that potential is one thing, and the other thing is that its going to take time to get there. But what this guy has accomplished already in just 4 short years is truly remarkable!

I'll admit, I was one of the bandwagonners who went crazy for him when he first hit huge in 2011 (he was popular the year before but it seemed like 2011 when his name really hit a fever pitch and I kept seeing him on TV). I still do like him now, but have cooled off.

.

All the replies on this thread are great, and mostly correct. Bruno isn't some gimmicky pop star who relies on social media and glamor to be relevant. In fact, I always wondered why he seems anti-popular nowadays. In the way that pretty much all his songs become huge radio hits and his alblums successful, but he's never in the news and no one really talks about him. But power 2 him, for focusing mainly on the music and not the Hollywood life (like someone said before).

.

He's kind of a mix of several different artists, and I think that's what turn people off from being "a huge fan". His style is really old-skool and so is his appearance and performance, so obviously the teenyboppers of today who love Katyperry and Ke$ha will find him sort of "dated". Same reason why Jason Mraz is kind of there but not really.

.

He also admitted in an interview that he watches Prince in his live videos from the 80s and says it's a huge inspiration, so Homeboy got good taste cool He's covered TMBGITW live too.

.

I think Bruno will be around for a few more years, probably until around 2019/2020. Not consistently a hitmaker, but around. And I'll have to respectfully disagree with those who think he'll be a huge 'legend'. He'll never be a Madonna/Prince/Bruce Springsteen figure that defines an entire decade to people 30 years later, but he'll be more of a Phil Collins; very popular, had hits, sold a lot, but didn't define the times. If that makes sense..

I'd also like to co-sign agreement of the severe overuse/ abuse of the words "icon" and "legend" as well as "household name". I've been hearing that term being tossed around as much as the other 2 for anybody who has an inkling of mainstream popularity. People like Jason Derulo, Iggy, and other lesser known acts I've been subjected to seeing called this... ugh.

That was sad reading about him giving a tape of Nothing on You and being treated like that in return. Sheesh, they could've waited until he left the room before saying that confused

Anyway he went on to be successful regardless so it's cooo

I can understand your point of view on this and I also find it bizarre, as you pointed out, that he has somehow remained anti-popular while being very popular at the same time. I think he's old school in the regard that he doesn't overexpose himself and doesn't market himself to death, not yet anyway. I think your comparison to him and Phil Collins make sense and I can completely see how the two would probably have a lot in common in terms of their impact on music history. I guess we need to train ourselves to be sold less on marketing and more on the music again and I think that's the reason Bruno connects to so many fans who are just interested in just the music and not all the other bells and whistles.

It will be interesting to see what his next album is going to be like. There's just something about an artist's third album that really shows if they are capable of hanging in there for the long run.

Dude got some mad talent, that alone should be obvious to anybody who watched him wreck the stage during this years SuperBowl.

But the reason he'll never be considered a legend is simple: Pop music and the music industry is pretty much dead...it's like Sly said all those years ago, Everybody's a star nowadays, thanks to Youtube, Twitch and younameit..People don't really have a need for huge megastars like MJ, Prince or Madonna anymore..that whole concept of megastardom went the way of the Dodo, and we'll probably never see stars of that caliber again...the masses don't have the attention span anymore, the moment a starlet like Lady GaGa is on the edge of worldwide popularity, the masses already get bored and demand the next big thing.

So, Bruno Mars absolutely has the talent, but he was probably born 20 years too late.

You bring up a lot of good points and facts that are tough to argue with. He was in fact born too late but he'll always have a solid fanbase. But, it also might be worth saying that some people will always need a "legend" of their generation just to feel connected to something. But, it might just be a generation that has a slew of internet celebs and not much more than that.
