Music Industry May Adopt Global Release Day

via: http://www.americansongwr...lease-day/

You may be used to picking up (or downloading) new albums on Tuesdays, but thanks to a pending agreement between major labels, that could change in the next year. In conjunction with the RIAA and IFPI, labels are currently hammering out an agreement that would establish Friday as a global, industry standard release date.

The effort is the latest in a long string of attempts to combat piracy, with the rationale being that cutting down on lag time in between releases would also cut down on piracy (ex: most albums release on Monday in the U.K., prompting some impatient U.S. fans to seek illegal downloads).

The new release protocol would not be without its issues, however. “This global streetdate is necessary for the industry but unfortunately it will be awkward for the physical retailers to change their ways of doing business,” one label executive told Billboard. “Now, they could have two-thirds of their sales in one day.”

Billboard reports that the move was partially inspired by Beyoncé, whose surprise, self-titled album sent a shockwave through the industry in late 2013. Thanks to releasing worldwide on one day, BEYONCÉ was more immune to piracy than albums that released on different days in different territories.

If the measure becomes a reality, the new street date would go into effect in July 2015.

I have enough friends in Australia to know that even if you choose one DAY for a global release, it will still be released before everyone else "down undah"

But what it means is that because of time-zone shifting, a global release date means it's still being released nearly a day early in some territories.

All joking aside...

A couple of years late and billons dollars lost by the music industry. confused Do people bother to download music illegally anymore... or as much? Why bother when you can stream free of charge, if you chosse too.

Other thing I'll say...

Does the industry have plans to release box-sets of music Asia and sometimes Europe can purchase? Do they have any plans rerelease music that's been out of print for decades? I suspect a lot of illegal downloading was for music that music lovers couldn't purchase anywhere. Surprise, surprise, shutting down megaloud and others still hasn't prevented people from sharing music.

Would have been relevant when music still was a relevant thing in the big picture, but it's not. Regardless of leaks and stuff, LABELS did this to themselves, first of all the streaming an album 1-2 weeks prior on itunes and amazon there are ways to get the whole album, almost everytime i see an album streamed early its already on dozens of websites for free. I KNOW that they are trying to let buzz out there, but it is not necessary. Also alot of artists i buy dont live on WEEK ONE sales anymore, this is interesting if you are KATY PERRY or Kanye or whomever sells like that, but the artists i buy either dont care about this or sell it on their own sites etc...

ALSO can itunes finally solve the international issue? since you have closed all record stores that sold imports except for one or two here in NYC, i'm tired of having to not be able to get overseas stuff without beggin the guy in the import shop for it and then paying for the shipping from overseas for it.

I agree it's annoying knowing songs I want are available on iTunes in other countries, but not my own.

There will still be country-specific releases unavailable in your area on global release day.
