There Is A Light That Never Goes Out Meaning...

I'm not usre if this has been discussed before. But i'm curious what others think about this.

Morrisey has been seen as a homosexual for quite some time now. While he has said he's ''asexual'' humansexual and articles claiming he dated a man for 2 years. He's never fully come out just to say whether he is or not. But, i feel, the music speaks for itself. I find The Smiths songs have songs about hidden conflicts in being a homosexual.

There Is A Light has that line ''it's their home, not my home, and I'm welcome no more'' always struck me about the song meaning. A Song about a boy who may have come out to his parents. He's kicked out, lost in life, and finds someone worth loving. An in the midst of that would die with him in this moment of happiness.

Plus the ''take me anywhere i don't care'' seems to be supporting the kicked out of home thing. Has this ever been talked about before? if this is the whole meaning of the song? or do y'all just see it as a morbid romance song?

Morrissey always struck me as a guy who loved being purposefully ambiguous, so good luck with

trying to figure out what the fuck he's singing about in this song, although I think it's just a pretty

standard depressed look at romance.

I think Morrissey tried to distance himself away from claiming to be a homosexual because lots

of people use that as the only lens in which to view his lyrics, which is probably annoying to a

lyricist who is intelligent and more than just his sexual orientation, such as Morrissey.

The same meaning as most of his songs. Smith Morrissey is sad.

I always related to that song, and I'm not gay. There's other reasons you might have problems with your parents.

I like the ambiguity of his lyrics. It may have been influenced by his Manchester homies the Buzzcocks, who were definitely gay, and mostly wrote love songs. But the singer never identifies the "you" he's talking to as male or female. So I can sing along to those songs as loud as any. "Ever Fallen In Love With Someone You Shouldn't Have", that's something anyone can identify with no matter who they date.

Even "home" where one is not wanted doesn't have to literally mean one's parents' house either.

As much as I like Morissey's lyricism, I kinda feel sometimes like he's exaggerating in terms of metaphors, and all that.

I think the whole song is about a careless, homeless Morissey who finds himself lost, as he sees no light at the end of the tunnel maybe after coming out, or simply he's kicked out of his house. Let's not assume the one he wants to die side by side with is a guy, she might be a lady. He clearly wants to have fun and feel alive as he never had that while he lived with his parents, for example.

Though, this could be 60% a song about a guy he loved. I got that from this part:

And in the darkened underpass
I thought oh God
My chance has come at last
But then a strange fear gripped me
And I just couldn't ask

He clearly wanted to ask his lover to go out with him, or he wanted to confess, but couldn't do it because he was afraid that his lover might not feel the same toward him, as we all know that unrequited love is a common theme in Morissey's work.

The title also says it all "There is a light tht never goes out".. There's a love that can never be confessed, there's a word that can never be said... It's all metaphors, and we all can relate to it.

The whole album is great! my favorite Smiths album by far. I don't personally worship or go gaga crazy over them like some alt rock fans do. But i do have a huge appreciation for The Queen Is Dead...

For what it's worth, that is how I interpreted it as well. But I wouldn't ever tell a Smiths newbie authoritatively "THIS IS WHAT THAT SONG MEANS..."

I've heard also that the song was going to be titled There is A Light in Your Eyes that Never goes out.

I like to subscribe to the fan boy/girl notion of Morrissey liking Johnny Marr. Its fantasy but its mine. Lol beatutiful song by a kick arse band.

I think I read somewhere that Morissey had a fight with Johnny backstage.

Anyways, the 80's and all were a hard time for an indie band like The Smiths, I think Morissey was too real about it he never cared about media, or his fanbase.

Wasn't it something about Marr not wanting to cover anymore 60's girl pop songs, you know, the cookies, shangri la's, etc?
