rick was never jealous of prince. he got bi and famous before he did.

On page 210 of 'Glow' Rick admits he 'resented' Prince.

The person he is speaking with points out to him that the resentment was from fear of Prince's talent.

I enjoy RJ's music (purchased all of it) but with all due respect he's not in the same talent-sphere as Prince, imo.

dude what are u talking about? rick was sign by motown. rick played with neil young, joni mitchell, and stephen stills. street songs album gave birth to thriller, purple rain, can;t slow down, all the big albums that propell black artist to stardom. prince got booed on half of the dates on that tour.

That is the exact opposite of what Andre Cymone said in a recent interview. He said people were booing at first but then people started jamming to the music. He said the girls were at their after parties and hanging in their dressing rooms. This was the reason Rick was pissed off. He knew this kid was going to move up and over him. Andre also said the only reason they got on the Rick tour was because they got thrown off tour with Kool and Gang. They were even supposed to be out on the road with Rick.

No one that has a lick of sense thinks the Rick was ever at P's level.

half the dates that prince played on was never finished. rick's fan base did not responded to well to his high heels, thong and being half naked on stage. did you say levels? so because you release asoundtrack to your own movie , all of a sudden he's more talented then rick????? warners did half ass job on marketing his music, but if he doing a soundtrack, somehow that can do numbers. prince does not work with the same type of talent that rick does. if rick did'nt attack mtv for their biased treatment of black artist, where would prince be?

Andre was on the tour so I am going to assume he knows what he was talking about. He also said Rick pulled a gun on him and you have Rick talking about trying pour liquier down P's throat. Don't you think they may have something to do with P not finishing the tour?

Let's not live in a fantasy world Rick was a coke head and a jackass. He was a talented guy but P came up with his own unique sound that your are still hearing today.

P was sellling out large arenas with "1999" which came before Purple Rain.

Even Teena Marie before she died said that on that tour eveyone would come running just to hear Prince's soundchecks and she doubted P even knew who Rick's mom was and that Rick was always taking a little things and blowing it up.

Hard to believe anyone still thinks Rick would have been bigger than Prince back in the day.

I hope the book discusses the making of my favorite Rick James album Fire it Up. The title track has a bassline that is one of the funkiest I 've ever heard anywhere. And the opening riff for "Love Gun" wouldn't sounded out of place in a spy movie. Great album, criminally overlooked.

Please, let's not turn this into a Prince Vs. Rick thread nuts there was enough room for both of them, and all the other great artists that were hot back then

I would have to agree with the bolded because when Prince first came on the scene, I was in my early teens, and my peers would clown him lol As he evolved as an artist, meaning that his image change with the music, seeing that we weren't looking at a one hit wonder, many of us grew to dig him, even now.

In his autobiography The Confessions of Rick James: Memoirs of a Super Freak, Rick describes the moment he first saw Prince:

“The first time I saw Prince and his band I felt sorry for him. Here’s this little dude wearing hi-heels, playing this New Wave Rock & Roll, not moving or anything on stage, just standing there wearing this trench coat. Then at the end of his set he’d take off his trench coat and he’d be wearing little girl’s bloomers. I just died. The guys in the audience just booed the poor thing to death.”

Again, I understood where Rick was coming from on that lol

...and to my understanding, Prince got booed, when he opened for the Rolling Stones.

He was not marketing himself to teens at the Dirty Mind stage and once again I am only repeating what Andre said.

I know you were quoting, but I was just agreeing with the bolded statement, based on my rememberance of Prince. It doesn't matter what his intended demographics were, people listened, they took notice, and boy did they lol

Unfortunately, it doesn't.

He mentions the album on 4 pages but no in-depth inspiration revelations. sad
