Gerry Goffin, Songwriter and Carole King's Ex-Husband, Dead at 75

The lyricist wrote over 50 Top 40 singles

June 19, 2014 5:25 PM ET

Lyricist Gerry Goffin, who cowrote the hits "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow," "The Loco-Motion" and "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" with his ex-wife Carole King, has died in his home in Los Angeles on Wednesday of natural causes. He was 75. His wife, Michele Goffin, reported his death, according to The New York Times.

"Gerry Goffin was my first love," Carole King said in a statement. "He had a profound impact on my life and the rest of the world. Gerry was a good man and a dynamic force, whose words and creative influence will resonate for generations to come. His legacy to me is our two daughters, four grandchildren, and our songs that have touched millions and millions of people, as well as a lifelong friendship. He will be missed by his wonderful wife Michele, his devoted manager, Christine Russell, his five children, and six grandchildren.

"His words expressed what so many people were feeling but didn't know how to say," she continued. "If you want to join his loved ones in honoring him, look at the names of the songwriters under the titles of songs. Among the titles associated with me, you'll often find Gerry's name next to mine."

Goffin was born in Brooklyn in 1939. Twenty years later, he married King, whom he'd met while both were attending Queens College, when he was 20 and she was 17. Over the course of his career, he cowrote seven songs that reached Number One on the charts and dozens of Top 40 hits, among them the Monkees' "Pleasant Valley Sunday," the Everly Brothers' "Crying in the Rain," Bobby Vee's "Take Good Care of My Baby" and James Taylor's "You've Got a Friend." In 1990, Goffin was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame along with King.

Goffin and King, who are the parents of two children including singer-songwriter Louise Goffin, divorced in 1968. Their story served as the basis for the musical Beautiful: The Carole King Story, which garnered seven Tony nominations this year and won two, including Best Actress for Jessie Mueller's portrayal of King.

After his separation from King, Goffin went on to cowrite several Top 10 hits, including Gladys Knight and the Pips' "I've Got to Use My Imagination," Diana Ross' Number One hit "Theme From Mahogany (Do You Know Where You're Going To)" and Whitney Houston's "Saving All My Love for You."

In 1995, Goffin was one of the first people to notice the talent of Kelly Clarkson, before she was on American Idol, and hired her to sing some of his demos. The next year, he released his final album, Back Room Blood.

Alicia Keys Named New Face Of Givenchy Perfume, Marking Star's First-Ever Beauty Contract

alicia keys givenchy

This girl is on fire! Alicia Keys is officially the new face of Givenchy perfumes.

“I’m honored to introduce the world to the newest scent by Givenchy,” Keys told WWD. “Givenchy has long been one of the world’s most iconic luxury fashion houses, and a personal favorite of mine,” she added.

This marks the first time that the Grammy Award-winning singer has ventured into the beauty biz. Most of her attention, beyond music, has been focused on fashion -- namely her collection of signature kicks for Reebok Classic. Nevertheless, the singer-songwriter is in good company -- Liv Tyler, Justin Timberlake, Uma Thurman and Amanda Seyfried have all fronted Givenchy perfumes.

Keys' next album is tentatively set to release in early 2015. "This album is more about the concept, the thought I'm trying to get across, where in the past it's been more about the melody. This time it's more about what we're going through as human beings," she said of her upcoming record.

We can't wait to see Alicia's ads for the yet-to-be-revealed fragrance once they launch in September.

Flex Alexander, Shanice to Star in OWN Series

Flex Alexander Shanice

June 19, 2014 | 02:14PM PT

The Oprah Winfrey Network has ordered eight episodes of “Flex & Shanice,” a one-hour documentary series.

The docu-series follows the lives of actor Flex Alexander, his wife, ’90s pop singer Shanice, and their extended family. After facing career stumbles and a financial blow, the couple and their two children moved into a rental home with their extended family to share costs.

The series will be joining OWN’s Saturday night lineup this fall.

“Saturday nights on OWN have become the place to be for viewers seeking great family entertainment, and we are pleased to share the newest members of our family with our audience,” said Sheri Salata, president of OWN. “Flex, Shanice and their big, loud, loving brood are not unlike many families today who have combined resources in order to get through some tough times. Seeing how their love, laughter, and enduring faith in one another makes even the most challenging of days worthwhile is both entertaining and inspiring. We think our viewers are really going to connect with them.”

Alexander is known for his TV show “One on One” on the now-defunct UPN, while Shanice recorded the Grammy-nominated song “I Love Your Smile.”

A sneak preview of the series aired on May 31 and was the night’s top cable telecast, non-sports, among African-American woman 18-49 and 25-54.

“Flex & Shanice” is executive produced by Jeff Dyson and Vernon Lynch of Lynch-Dyson Entertainment, as well as Julie Pizzi and Patty Ivins.

The actress joins Charlie Cox and Vincent D'Onofrio on the upcoming series

Rosario Dawson has joined the cast of Netflix-Marvel's upcoming “Daredevil” series in a “critical” role, said Jeph Loeb, Marvel's head of television on Friday.

She will play a woman with a quest to heal the wounds of Hell's Kitchen. Her work forces Matt Murdock, played by Charlie Cox, unexpectedly crashing into her life, while her own journey forever alters the course of his battle against the injustices in the city.

Rosario Dawson is one the most charismatic, talented and powerful actresses in Hollywood, so she was always at the top of our list for ‘Marvel's Daredevil,'” said Loeb on the Marvel website. “Her role in the series is absolutely critical to Matt Murdock's journey to become the hero we know as Daredevil.”

A rare jump to television for the actress, Dawson's movie credits include the “Sin City” film franchise, “Seven Pounds,” and “Clerks II,” among many others.

In addition to Cox, Dawson joins Vincent D'Onofrio, who will play Wilson Fisk aka The Kingpin, on the cast. ”Spartacus” creator Steven S. DeKnight has signed on as the series’ showrunner, replacing Drew Goddard.

The new series will kick off next year, with Marvel Television producing in association with ABC Television Studios.

The Rap Test Adds Tupac Shakur Quiz on What Would've Been His 43rd Birthday

The Rap Test Adds Tupac Shakur Quiz on What Would've Been His 43rd Birthday

The rap trivia start-up website has racked up 4 million responses since launching Thursday

Start-up site The Rap Test is honoring Tupac Shakur with a new quiz measuring fan recognition of the Death Row artist's catalog. The late rapper would've turned 43 years old on Monday.

The rap trivia site, which aims to find the world's biggest rap genius, has racked up more than four million responses to its questions since launching last Thursday.

The Rap Test measures players’ recognition with 15-second audio clips of more than 1,000 songs from popular rappers. It provides multiple choice answers and awards points on a time-elapsed basis.

Danny Friday, the 21-year-old coder behind the website, designed The Rap Test to be fun as well as informative: “Our digital culture is quick to simplify rappers’ bodies of work to their latest tours or albums,” Friday said in a statement. “The Rap Test challenges that, using full discographies to emphasize the origins of each artist's work.”

Engineered to yield worldwide leader boards in rap knowledge while also culling metrics — such as which songs are most commonly confused — The Rap Test currently boasts quizzes for the following artist lineup: Tupac, Kanye West, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Eminem and Meek Mill.

Shakur was gunned down the Las Vegas strip going-on 18 years ago. He died on Sept. 13, 1996.

VH1 Save the Music Foundation and Sara Bareilles Name Winners of ‘Keys + Kids’ Piano Grants (Exclusive)

VH1 Save the Music Foundation and Sara Bareilles Name Winners of 'Keys + Kids' Piano Grants (Exclusive)

Ten K-12 public schools will each receive a grant package totaling $10,000

VH1 Save the Music Foundation and Sara Bareilles have chosen the winners of its inaugural “Keys + Kids” grants program, in which 10 K-12 schools have each won a piano grant worth $10,000.

“The piano has been a central instrument of my life, and that is largely thanks to music education programs I had access to in school,” Bareilles said in a statment. “It was an honor to partner with VH1 Save The Music to launch the Keys + Kids Program. I believe that arts education can change many young lives the same way it changed mine, and I'm so thrilled to have been a part of this program working to keep music in our classrooms any way we can.”

TheWrap was the first to report about the grant program back in March. Schools had to submit applications between March 10 and April 30. The applications were judged by a committee made up of members of the Foundation's Board of Directors, VH1 senior staff and patrons of the Keys + Kids Leadership Circle.

“We received an overwhelming number of applications to our Keys + Kids pilot program, demonstrating how important the piano is to music education programs in public schools,” said VH1 Save The Music's Paul Cothran, executive director and vice president.

“Although the selection process was incredibly challenging, we are proud to announce the winners, which would not be possible without the help of our Keys + Kids Leadership Circle including: Avnet Inc., The Durst Organization, Houlihan's Restaurants, The LEGO Children's Fund, NAMM Foundation, Raymond Weil, William Hill Estate Winery, Shure Incorporated, Yamaha and countless individuals.”

The grant program will return next year.

Without further ado, here are the inaugural “Keys + Kids” winners:

Calhoun County High School, St. Matthews, SC
Coit Creative Arts Academy, Grand Rapids, MI
Fair Haven K-8 School, New Haven, CT
