Valley Central says kids can't dress like rock group KISS in school

MONTGOMERY — Next time, district officials better shout it, shout it, shout it out loud: Don't come to school with your face painted to the point where we can't recognize you.

.

Four Valley Central High School boys learned about that rule when they came dressed as members of the rock band KISS for Celebrity Day during Senior Week this past week.

.

The outfits worn by Derek Chomyn as Paul Stanley, Tyler Fisher as Ace Frehley, Dylan Schoonmaker as Peter Criss and Mike Carmody as Gene Simmons — black leather jackets, wigs and white face paint — were a little too effective.

.

"Within three minutes, we got sent to the office," Chomyn said, where an assistant principal told them "we had to take off our makeup and wigs. They said they could not identify us."

.

Superintendent of Schools Richard Hooley — who did not see the boys themselves but heard they "did quite a nice job" on their costumes, said, "We have a rule: We don't let kids paint their faces."

Hooley could not point to a written policy but said it's part of their "procedures and practices" to require students to be recognizable at all times.

.

He said Principal Jayme Ginda-Baxter reminded students of the prohibition beforehand, and that it also was mentioned in a flyer, although Chomyn could not remember any such reminder.

Hooley also cited a security concern.

.

"The guy who shot up that theater in Colorado was dressed as The Joker," Hooley recalled.

The boys left campus to remove their costumes — a sojourn that included a stop at the local International House of Pancakes, where at least one patron asked for their autographs.

.

Hooley said he wants it made clear that when the boys came back to school, "They were not punished." Chomyn confirms that "they let us go back to class" and there were no consequences.

KISS might not be among the hottest current hitmakers, but Chomyn, in explaining their choice of costumes, said, "We love KISS. We're all into that '70s and '80s music."

.

The incident has unexpectedly put the four in the spotlight. Radio station WPDH, the Poughkeepsie-based "Home of Rock 'n' Roll," interviewed them and has featured them on its Web site. Gene Simmons himself retweeted one local mom's Twitter post about the dustup.

.

And Chomyn says Phoenix radio station KDKB gave them four tickets to the upcoming Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Brooklyn — where KISS will be among nine new inductees in the class of 2014.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

They should get MINI KISS to do it.

And they should have the ROCKAFIRE EXPLOSION perform for Nirvana.

Fact is that Paul and Gene wanted ALL members to be honoured! The 'originals' lastest 7-8 years,¨Peter Criss didn't play (much) on Dynasty '79 and '80 Unmasked,in fact he played drumms on 6(!) studio albums.Ace left in '82, didn't play on Creatures...Despite a reunion, they split once again.Respect for the 'original band' but Vinnie (who wrote great songs and gave Kiss the boost they needed in '82), Bruce and Eric Carr (11 years in the band & the better drummer!) were as important, if not more, than Ace&Peter!!!Some may hate Eric Singer (+10years band member, replaced Carr on the magnificent Revenge album) and Tommy for wearing the make up, looking like Ace and Peter but they keep Kiss alive. So, if ALL those long time members, better and worse, can't be honoured, why bother playing with 'just' the originals?? When Van Halen was inducted, Sammy was included!

wait, I thought the r&r HoF execs are the ones who decide which members get inducted...

in fact, I thought they were going to induct Paul/Gene/Ace/Peter, and then "allowing" the current Paul/Gene/Eric Singer/Tommy Thayer to play some songs after the speeches...

Besides the originals (Paul/Gene/Ace/Peter), Eric Carr & Vinnie Vincent should be THE only other ones in the R&RHOF as KISS. F*** everyone else that came afterwords. Period. Point Blank. End of story.

The originals have to be honored SERVICE in the band does not matter, if CHICAGO ever gets in then Peter Cetera has to be there or at least honored, even though Jason Scheff has been in there 30 years now and Peter was there a decade or so. The lineup from the start has to be honored because it goes from first album, so tough luck KISS, i know they were bitching about getting in, then the whole NIRVANA thing etc...now they are on the same show as Nirvana at the same time, Gene and Paul are doing it to get some attention on a dead topic. No one cares at this point either way.Im there for Hall and Oates who should have been BITCHING much more than Kiss about getting in, Hall and oates deserved it way way way more than fucking Kiss. Funny thing is that Dave Grohl in 5 years is gonna get in again with the Foo Fighters, similar to Clapton but at least with Grohl he actually had a body of work with those bands and led one, Eric gets in for taking a shit on a album.

I'm pretty sure the original four are all getting INDUCTED. However they will not PLAY TOGETHER for the performance part.

Remember Blondie's induction fiasco? The originals did get inducted together, and all made speeches, but whoever was in the original band that did not come back for the reunion band was not able to perform. I think it was Frank Infante that said during his speech, "Hey we want to play with you Debbie, can we come up?" and she basically told him to get lost. Harsh! But who knows what goes on behind the scenes with rock stars LOL!

yeah the originals go in, its the others that is the decision of the Hall. When Van Halen got in and only Sammy and Michael showed (2 guys not in there anymore) Sammy was inducted by the hall as were the original four, Gary Cherone obviously was not but props to Sammy for giving him a nod, because Gary had to deal with the ego maniac nut known as Eddie V, and Gary took a bullet for that whole fiasco. When HEART Got in even though the firing of members by the Wilsons in the late 70's was pretty bitter and they really hadnt spoke, HEART all played together a bit on stage which to me was a shock, but again thats PROPS to the wilson sisters who realized those 3 guys were a huge part of the sound too and getting them signed. KISS and Blondie and Van Halen and Guns N Roses are all head cases with issues that cant be put aside for one night. So i say whatever, to spite KISS i wouldnt even do a music part on them, i would do like they do when they "grandfather" in some old blues guy and let him take a bow for 30 seconds, i mean since KISS doesnt care at this point, why even deal with their shit.

Well, tell me on which classic albums have Vinnie Vincent, Bruce Kulick, Eric Carr, Eric Singer and Thommy Thayer played??? Sorry, but none of them are/is important when it comes to Kiss and their reputation that got them into the Hall. Unlike Sammy Hagar, with whom Van Halen was more successful than with David Lee Roth. That comparison doesn't hold any water at all.

Maybe if they had all held off their tell-all books trashing the other members until AFTER the Hall of Fame ceremony, it would be possible. But Peter's book is all fantasies of boiling Gene and Paul in oil. No wonder they don't want to jam out.

Hey Kiss was only a magic thing for a real short time. They made it five years and seven albums. That's a better run than some have.

I love 70's Kiss but for a lot of fans the Eric Carr era was just as good! They finally had some hits in Europe! Oh yeah, I was made...in '79 was a major hit but rockers like to forget that one. It all depend on when you got into Kiss or wich era you like more. Fact is, Eric Carr era was better, he should be honoured and don't listen to whining Peter

All the members should be recognized with the award BUT the originals should get the first recognition over it all, and to be honest, if the originals arent going to play I DONT think anyone should be playing out of respect, saw Peter Criss on that metal show last week and honestly i dont know KISS that well but i feel for what he was saying, basically that Gene and Paul want him when its for something $$ related, big $$ related. Peter just wants to get up there and play which Gene and Paul refuse to do. So no one is playing which sucks overall for the FANS of this band which is who gene and paul are disrespecting in the end. Peter Criss saying that gene and paul didnt even call him when he had cancer, sorry, thats pretty shitty on those guys, what ever the differences, Peter fucked up Ace fucked up and im sure Gene and Paul are not innocent easy guys to work with.

As for members keeping bands afloat and in KISS's case members like KUllick and Carr kept this band alive and relevant. I feel all should get recognition, just like if JOURNEY got in, Steve Perry is not an original member are you gonna shut him out? I mean the new singer has also saved that band and he gets recognition. STYX if they got in Tommy Shaw who really has lead this band the last two decades wasnt even in the band the first 5 albums, Dennis DeYoung was there all that time but got replaced, so its a tough issue as far as "egos and fighting" but everyone that played should be in and kept bands afloat.

Great cover article on KISS in the current Rolling Stone. It's a screwed-up deal, but they aren't going to get together.

I personally think its all Gene and some Paul on this. I think both have a right to be angry for not getting in years ago, and i think they want to take away from the event by doing it this way. Its going to be interesting how this will all go down, not in terms of KISS but the others that have to be part of this show, i mean obviously Gene and Paul are going to speak, if they go, it will be interesting what they have to say.

Man I read the RS article this weekend and Gene Simmons is bitter as shit. And he's the one that basically wins the whole thing.

I think it's just as well that none of them are playing live. They'll probably have a band of four Dave Grohls to do the honors.

I found it interesting that Gene's position was, not with those two guys, and Paul's was, not unless EVERYONE in the band can be there including both Kulick brothers.

A comment on Paul Stanley's recent comments by RnRHoF CEO.

"I don't like all the sniping back and forth, though mostly it's been forth," says Peresman. "And I totally understand his point of view. What he's failing to understand is that there are certain acts that are nominated and brought in on their entire body of work, up until the day before the nominating committee meets. They are still evolving bands that are breaking new ground. With Kiss, there wasn't a single person we spoke to that didn't feel the reason these guys were being inducted was because of the four original members. It's an incredibly unique situation. I can't think of another band, outside of Gwar, that has members that are dressed up in costumes. You basically have these new members that are replicating exactly and playing the music that was created by the two other members that are being inducted."

Yeah, that's pretty much the problem. I can see a few others being "worth" getting in, most notably Eric Carr (who was even a member during the last years of the masked era). But in the end, what type of "significant contributions to rock'n'roll" did the later members do? Surely KISS is one of the most important rock bands of all time, judged by their influence alone, but unless you want to make the argument that the 80s hair metal phase was a top-notch period artistically and musically, I don't see a point including "all the members of KISS".

Having said that, KISS has made a good number of classic singles at least, so them being included only now is truly shameful.
