EXCLUSIVE: Rihanna to receive 'Icon' honor at American Music Awards

[img:$uid]http://www.billboard.com/files/styles/promo_650/public/media/rihanna-diamond-tour-toronto-650-430.jpg[/img:$uid]Rihanna has been chosen to be the first-ever "AMA Icon Award" winner at this month's American Music Awards, being held Nov. 24 on ABC. The "Diamonds" singer will also perform at the event."The first-ever Icon Award was created to honor an artist whose body of work has made a profound influence over pop music on a global level," said producer Larry Klein. "Rihanna’s iconic and innovative sound has enabled her to become one of the most influential and best-selling artists of all time."This month Rihanna scored her 25th top-10 hit on the Hot 100, with "The Monster," her collaboration with Eminem, a chart feat that ties her with Elvis Presley on the all-time list. "The Monster" is also Rihanna's 45th Hot 100 entry, tying her with the output of Mariah Carey.A six-time AMA winner, Rihanna will compete in four categories at this year's show, including for artist of the year and favorite soul/R&B album, for "Unapologetic."She joins previously announced performers Katy Perry, Jennifer Lopez, TLC, Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake, One Direction, Florida Georgia Line, Miley Cyrus, Imagine Dragons and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. Pitbull will host the ceremony and perform his new single "Timber" with Ke$hahttp://www.billboard.com/articles/news/5793154/rihanna-to-receive-ama-icon-award?utm_source=twitter

another article discussing this.[img:$uid]http://images.lipstickalley.net/images/avatars/customavatars/avatar141785_23.gif[/img:$uid]Rihanna is in the running for four trophies at the 2013 American Music Awards, including artist of the year, but the singer will be given the night's biggest honor: the Icon Award. The Barbadian pop diva will be the first artist to score the special merit award, producers for the awards told The Times on Thursday. Rihanna is also scheduled to perform on the telecast.“The first-ever Icon Award was created to honor an artist whose body of work has made a profound influence over pop music on a global level,” show producer Larry Klein said. “Rihanna’s iconic and innovative sound has enabled her to become one of the most influential and bestselling artists of all time.”Since her 2005 debut, the 25-year-old has undoubtedly become one of the biggest forces in pop music. She's issued a staggering seven albums in just seven years -- each armed with a set of slinky, chart-toppers (with 12 of those landing at No. 1)..Her consistent onslaught of material -- for four consecutive years she’s released a new album in November -- has allowed the singer an unrivaled radio, chart and pop cultural dominance. She’s sold 50 million albums and 180 million singles worldwide, making her the bestselling digital artist of all time. And with 4 billion views on her oft-provocative music videos, she’s the most watched artist on Vevo/YouTube.Rihanna joins a lineup of previously announced performers that includes Luke Bryan, Miley Cyrus, Florida Georgia Line, Lady Gaga, Ke$ha, Imagine Dragons, Kendrick Lamar, Jennifer Lopez, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, One Direction, Katy Perry, Justin Timberlake, TLC and Pitbull, who will host the telecast. The American Music Awards will air live from the Nokia Theatre on Nov. 24 at 8 p.m., except on the West Coast where it will be tape-delayed.

Well, even though i don't dig her. I would imagine Rihanna is to my generation...what Madonna was to a lot of orgers. Now i'm not one for comparisons and i am not saying their similar.

But i am talking in terms of having constant (And i mean constant) hit after hit after hit after hit after hit. No other artists.. not beyonce, Taylor Swift, GaGa etc. Have been able to have almost every single they release be a huge hit... and that is not counting the shit she has done with T.I, Drake, Nicki Minaj, David Guetta etc.

I'm not hating. Rihanna has managed to accomplish a lot in a short amount of time. I'd say this honor is well deserved.

Rihanna truly deserves it! She's put out so many hits consistenly and has a 'brand' that will keep her rollling in loot for a long time. Her songs are catchy, she is smart (at least I think so), edgy, has a cool accent and she's beautiful.Sorry haters! Rihanna Rocks.

Oh please lol no one is hating. We are just tired of the bullshit and don't drink the koolaid. Didn't they give Beyonce a similiar type of award a couple of years ago? Okay... so why is it shocking that they would give Rihanna one too? lol I am not surprised at all by this. This is a topic than can go on forever in circles.

***************

The industry promotes whatever artist they want and give out awards to who ever they want which is why these white washed awards don't mean nothing. NOT ONE POP ARTIST of this generation has made one iconic song or iconic album that will be remembered 50 years from now. Having multiple hits does not make someone an "Icon" and especially if they are not "iconic" songs. So Ive never considered none of these lightweights to be "icons" Just alot of smokes, screens, and hype.

Don't get me wrong, I agree with you regarding the industry and the lackluster of talent these days. But given the fast and recycled times we are living and the meaning of the word 'Icon', its appropriate for her. It just means that she is a 'symbol' of success in the pop music industry. Granted she is NOT the greatest singer, actress or entertainer that ever lived. It's just that she has an international appeal. True talent is often unpopular and under appreciated. Just like the man's news site we are posting on. cool

It seems incredibly ironic that a person who is highly manufactured and has negligible stage presence and/or musical talent gets lauded as an icon during an era where people are celebrated and given reality shows simply for being famous....this speaks volumes of how truly life isn't fair....

True...then if that is the case a more appropiate award should be "most successful artist of the year" or "most successful international artist of the year" but calling her an icon is an exaggeration. People like to compare her to Madonna but Madonna has iconic songs, iconic performances, iconic music videos that really reasonates to people. Rihanna does not have iconic songs, iconic performances or videos so its bewildering why someone would call her an "icon" when she has done nothing iconic. If she is a symbol of success then give her an award for being successful not for being an iconic when she has done nothing iconic.

Rihanna is talentless, but its the generation that needs this kinda icon, I say Lady Gaga deserves this icon award from all those female pop chicks, she's different, influential and gay.

Btw did y'all see the AMAs last year? FULL OF CRAP, I think we should thank god that THE GRAMMYs is the only award show that doesn't invite EDM/Electroshit puppets to perform, and yet they pay homage to rock & roll, reggae...etc.

Exactly this is no shock i dont understand the craze over this, i mean we all trash this show anyway, its about as "necessary" as the MTV Video Music Awards show at this point. She is the biggest single artist in america, i mean her katy Perry are pretty much the icons of this age, to this show. Its not like Rihanna is getting inducted into the songwriting hall of fame, its an award show that has no relevance whatsoever, thats why they moved this show to seperate from the Grammy Awards, they actually used to compete not anymore. No shock with this

Well, there are a very few like Bruno Mars or Adele, have hits that are pretty good. But I know what you mean. I just watched a full Billy Idol concert on youtube and songs I have not heard in over a decade seemed so fresh and awesome and iconic. I cant imagine the same for much of the music today.

Do you think that not one pop artist of this era hasn't made an iconic song because people these days have short attention spans or because there are multiple media outlets out there compared to years past? I often wonder if that has fragmented music to the point where nothing is memorable because there's just so much of it out there. Thoughts?

The American Music Awards has always been based off of popularity and sales, not quality. So, Rhinanna receiving an Icon award from them doesn't surprise me. It saddens me, but doesn't surprise me. lol In another 10 years, people are going to forget all about her just like they did Ashanti. She's just another pretty face who has no singing talent whatsoever, her songs are hideous and there's nothing else about her that will make people remember her.

I think it has more to do with the quality of pop music than it does with the general public. I also think the "industry" doesn't help when they choose to push a certain brand or type of music. It hinders those artists creativity because they feel the only way their song will go to number one or Top 4 is if they make the type of music the "industry is promoting". As a result, they compromise their "creativity" and they don't grow as artists.

************************************************************

I don't really considered Janelle a pop star in the same sense as Rihanna (although she is on the rise to be one) but I think the ArchAndroid is a classic. So artists can still make classics and memorable music and that has nothing to do with technology. I do think technology hinders artists from being "innovative/iconic" because now we can look back at past artists who have already done what alot of these todays artists are trying to do so it doesnt look so "new" or fresh when we see it today. Most iconic moments are things that have never been done before and can not be duplicated.

****************************************************************

I dont know why people think her having more number ones than artists that have been in the industry longer is some type of "accomplishment". People say that statement like Rihanna is competing with alot of competitive artists lol. Shes not competiting with alot Michael Jackson's, Prince's, Whitney Houston's, Phil Collin's, Stevie Wonder's or Queen's. So OF COURSE it would be easy for one of her forgettable catchy songs to sky to the top when there is not much to compete with and then you have to look at how much the music industry has change compared to the 70's and 80's. It is much easier for a song to make it to number one than it was before. So I dont want to hear no lame ass arguement that since she has more number ones than such and such she deserves a icon award.

I'm a big fan of Rihanna and her music - the music, the lyrics, the image and the videos go well together in my opinion. She's got an edge to her and her music that lacks in a lot of pop music right now. The entire package just works. Those folks who think she can't sing need to listen to Esther Dean, a decent singer who has co-written many lyrics with Rihanna, sing Rihanna's songs - essentially what I'm getting at is that Rihanna's voice has a uniqueness to it.

Now, I also gather that some of you still hold on to the idea that if an artist is not doing everything on his or her own, it doesn't really count - Prince fans are notorious for throwing this around. Rihanna and the artists she collaborates with are putting out a unique pop music project with her. The art is what's most important - not how it was created.

Not appreciating the art doesn't mean that it's poor - not connecting with it is your own perogative. Prince had the same response from many who just didn't connect with his music while he was on top of the charts, winning awards, touring massive tours, etc. We all did but because someone else didn't, doesn't mean it is poor - it's what it means to us as individuals.

Rihanna has some monster songs - she's the real deal.
