Lemmy As A Basist

I often complain that a lot of famous rock bands play it safe with bass a lot. They usually put a lot of the power in the guitar, drums and vocals. The bass is just.. kinda there...

Now there are exceptions like Deep Purple, Living Color, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rage Against The Machine, Led Zeppelin etc.

But i have really come to admire Lemmy as a bass player! i would say Motorhehead is the first metal band where bass pretty much leads over guitar. I really love the sound of his bass and i also love that he is not afraid to solo smile

When i want really great bass rifts and solos usually i go to funk, blues, or soul. But The occassional times i will dig a rock solo.

What are opinions on Lemmy as a bass player?

I love Lemmy.twocents

A couple of observations.

He plays thru a Marshall Stack and it sounds like a tractor, the loudest fucking tractor you've ever heard. lol

He plays the bass more like a guitar more then he does a bass. Using a pick, playing double time, rocking a lot of chords.

He is a one-of-a-kind musician that wears his influences on his sleeve and doesn't care. Chuck Berry, rockabilly, Elvis

While not technically brilliant, he's got the ear to know what's what and an incredible sense of time.

Ahh you said it 100% perfect smile that is the perfect describtion for him. His bass sometimes sounds ugly... and dark and muddy. But he likes that sound an dit gives Motorhead the signature sound they have always had.

I like how he said his first few bands he wanted it to be a mix of Little Richard, Deep Purple, Zeppelin, And Chuck Berry.

Even with all the metal involved. His songs especially his older work has the bluesy chords as well which i dig.
