Although Marvin Gaye is my favorite singer of all time, I have to admit I prefer the changes on the James Taylor version. For the record, Marvin Gaye liked James' version of the song, and was actually a fan of James Taylor's singing, and vice versa.

When the question is Marvin or someone else, the answer is almost always Marvin.

As for this particular matchup, I'm not a fan of James Taylor's version at all. His vocal performance is jarring, stilted, and darn-near emotionless. I cringe every time he overenunciates "I want to stop" and the chorus harmonies never gel for me. All in all, I've never felt the song was a good match for JT's talents.
