July 25, 2013

It’s only July, but Mary J. Blige is getting ready for a soulful Christmas. The Queen of Hip-Hop Soul has announced plans for her first-ever holiday album.

A Mary Christmas, due in October on Matriarch/Verve/Interscope Records, features her soulful interpretation of classic holiday tunes.

She has collaborated for the first time with David Foster, the Grammy-winning producer behind multi-platinum Christmasalbums for Michael Bublé, Rod Stewart, Andrea Bocelli, Josh Groban, and Celine Dion.

This marks Blige’s 11th studio album since her 1992 debutWhat’s the 411?

Blige has dabbled in Christmas music in the past including duets with Andrea Bocelli (“What Child Is This?”), Rod Stewart (“We Three Kings”), and Angie Martinez (“Christmas in the City”).

Not a very cheery cover for such a festive season!

Unless she is singing as the biblical Mary who is getting turned away as she is ready to give birth to the Christ child, and she got that depressing My Life vibe..

I hope it got a Rick James samp

I think (hope) Mary has sense enough to go the traditional route with this album and not inject techno/hip-hop trends into holiday music.

lol That's exactly what her pensive, pained expression looks like it is saying!

Yeah, she looks like someone in the throes of misery. The cover is a downer.

When I think of Christmas I think of happiness, cheer and smiling faces. She looks sad and depressed as hell. I hope this is not the real cover.

I don't think she looks sad or depressed at all. I think, if anything, she looks reflective.

The first release from the album is her rendition of Donnie Hardaway's "This Christmas". Have a listen.
