hmmm I knew about Nana Mouskouri being the best selling female artist in history. The rest all make sense but Taylor Swift?? Really?? I know she sells here in America but she's virtually unknown outside the US. Country music is really not that popular outside the US. Oh well...still.

Taylor Swift is pop everywhere else. And who is number 10? The title of this thread is a lie.

I agree.
singles + albums Britney sold a lot more than 100 million
Rihanna has sold more too (especially due to its huge sales of singles)

Britney was officially 11th when this was made, with only around million records sold less than Swift.

She had a hit this summer and her new album is coming so I guess it will change very soon. The thing is, singles are selling better than ever! Taylor sold only around 20 million albums, and more than 80 million digital singles.

I'm not too sure about Taylor Swift - I would think Beyonce, Rihanna, Pink and Britney would have sold more... but then again look at Garth Brooks. Never had a top ten single in the UK ( probably in Europe) but is right up there with The Beatles, Elvis and MJ in the billboard rankings.

Isnt it amazing that Garth Brooks sold over 100 million Albums in the USA alone..That is CRAZY! That's the POWER of Country music fans...Here in the Dirty South Carolina Country stars book venues all the Damn time...Country music Lovers support their artists 100%..

Country has 2 or 3 award shows to itself on regular network TV. No other genre has that. They're either on cable or syndicated. It's also been said that country has the highest ratio of people buying a physical CD (in the US) instead of downloding (paid or free).

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Well, there´s a big difference between selling albums and singles...Britney´s first album sold more than Taylor´s albums combined, so it´s a strange list

I always thought that Madonna sold more records than any other female artist. It has often been said that Madonna sold 300 million records in her career.

Im not sure about Pink but Beyonce and Rihanna's "albums" dont sell alot contrary to "popular belief". Rihanna sells alot in singles though.Taylor has sold more than them but Brittany I am not to sure. Brittanys albums sell pretty well.Brittany's first album alone sold over 20 million... odd that she is not on the list.

It is NOT strange. When they say "records" they mean, albums, singles, videos... EVERYTHING!

Every time you look around there's a televised Country Music Award ceremony. The Producers NEVER have a hard time booking the Top country acts...Country music is a well oiled machine...

Interesting. Other than Janet, Summer and an occasional Streisand and Carey joint,

I don't like any of these artists.

It's kind of Funny that they're not sure if Celine & MiMi sold 200-Million units or less...Why not just cap their Shit off at 200 Million sold?

This list is very suspect. Can anyone list the 18 albums in Nippy's discography ? They have to be including various Greatest Hits and Best Of packages in these album counts but still, even taking that into consideration, that still doesn't add up to 18 albums. Unless they are counting compilations released in various countries.

And I've never even heard of this Nana woman.lol

USA is not the world. At one time, Jackie Chan was little known in the US, but was really popular in other places. A lot of entertainers popular in the US are little known in other countries. Theoretically, since India & China has over a billion people each, if a large portion of the population of each country bought the albums of an act from their individual country, those acts could have the biggest selling albums without any other country ever hearing of them.

350 million?

Please. That's not even a real figure. Someone made that poster up... I doubt the IFPI confirmed this. Where you get this?

They say records but what do they really mean? Things have changed so much, it's hard to calculate how a record is counted. Is it counted as records, copies, units? Or is it really that complex?

The Nana thing was debunked years ago so for people to bring it up again is really funny since most folks globally probably never heard of her except for her maiden country and probably in other European countries.

Nonsense.

India's music industry is far smaller than the US and smaller even than the UK...

Its no coincidence that nearly all those women are American.

The Asian music industry is really small compared to other industries. Japan stands out obviously but other industries in Asian countries are much smaller. India and China may have large populations but they have smaller sales. Some Asian countries don't even go internationally, they stay domestically and some that accept international sales, differ lower than domestic sales (like Japan for example). Same with the European, South American and Oceania regions. The North American region, particularly here in the U.S., remains the largest musical market of the world. The only country you can actually sell ten million copies of an album.
