New Prefab Sprout album to be released in October

Some weeks ago, a new Prefab Sprout album, apparently titled The Devil Came A-Calling, leaked in the internet. Now we've got the news that a new album by Paddy McAloon's band will be released in October the 7th, which will probably be the official release of the album that has leaked.

I don't think there are many Prefab Sprout's fans in the .org, but I think there might be some...

For reals?? Love me some Prefab. Jordan the Comeback is one of the most underrated masterpieces in modern music. Not sure if it was just a rumor but Paddy was tapped to fill in Lennon's part in a never fully realized Beatles Reunion.

I hadn't heard about it. Well, Paddy is really one of the best songwriters I'ever listened, and his gift for melody can be compared to very few... maybe McCartney himself would be one of them.

I was just listening to Devil Came a-Calling--not sure how or why that leaked, but, IMO, I think it's has some of Paddy's best since "Jordan the Comeback"...certainly better than 'Let's Change the World with Music", from a few years back...

I've listened to some songs and they're great. Where I disagree with you, palligap, is with Let's Change The World With Music: I love it from the bottom of my heart!

Regarding why this leaked and who did it, it's not clear. It seems that it was uploaded in Soundcloud in march, but nobody noticed it until June. There's always the possibility that Paddy himself wanted to "test the waters", to see if there was enough interest...

Do you think this is the same thing coming out officially in October?

Lol, I know ...I think I'm the only Sprout fan who didn't love that whole album all the way through...although I really did rejoice when I heard "Sweet Gospel Music", and "Last of the Great Romantics"....

One improvement here is that on "Devil..." I hear at least some fully fleshed out tunes, with real instruments....

That's what I think, yes. Maybe someone involved in the album release is responsible of its leaking... who knows. Also, the image that has been linked to the album since it leaked is the same as the one that has been provided with the "official" announcement (which has been made through the Prefab Sprout Project website). So this may be the album cover (I guess without the sentence at the bottom):

Yes, it seems more "finished" than the last one.

Wikipedia has already included the info! But they say (without a source) that the album will be titled Crimson/Red:

In June 2013, a leak of ten previously unreleased songs on Soundcloud led to speculation that a new Prefab Sprout album was being recorded. A proposed 7 October 2013 release date was subsequently confirmed on 14 July, with the title given as 'Crimson/Red'.[citation needed]

I've got some more info about the record company who'll launch the album, taken from the Facebook page of the Prefab Sprout Project:

"The album is going to be called Crimson / Red - no final order for the track list yet. It will be distributed by Warner ADA. The record is coming out on a new record label called Icebreaker Records. This has been formed by Chris Hutton of Shamrock Solutions and Shamrock have worked with artists such as Sinead O'Connor, Andrea Corr, Ali J."

If this album is half as good as 'Jordan The Comeback' then I'll be buying it. I have fond memories of buying the vinyl of that album after reading all the amazingly positive reviews. An album that has Jenny Agutter singing on it has to be good. ;-) I saw Prefab Sprout live many years ago and had a great time. I'm glad they're still active.

I think his writing peaked with Jordan: The Comeback.

Paddy's most disjointed albums are The Gunman and Other Stories, Andromeda Heights and Let's Change the World; however, even those are sprinkled with gems.

I agree about Jordan...I thought that everything after that paled in comparison (and I didn't like The Gunman at all)....

But as I said above , I don't know when these tracks were actually recorded, but I think that this stuff coming out now is some of his strongest since Jordan-- This is the first time since then that I've listened and actually been excited about a Sprout project...some pretty strong Paddy tunes, IMO.....

From what I've read, Paddy may have recorded these tracks in 2004-2005, but the album may have been conceived several years before that, probably in the 90's. At the end of the day, I've got no idea.

In my opinion, Let's Change The World With Music and Andromeda Heights can compare to the three previous albums; the only one I didn't like much was The Gunman And Other Stories.

The "Billy" song paligap has posted is brilliant. The last time I was searching in Youtube, only "Billy" and "Adolescence" were there, other songs had been removed.

The whole thing is quite bizarre. There hasn't been a press note or anything. The info of the official release has been published in the website of "The Prefab Sprout Project", which is a fan project that will result in a CD of Prefab-inspired songs (not covers, but songs à la Paddy). So there's a kind of "inner circle" of fans that's becoming more or less an "official source": like Dr. Funkenberry! It seems Paddy will make some promotion very soon, maybe even next week, so let's hope he explains something...

Kool, looking forward to that!

BTW, I did hear the "Sprout Project's" first song, "Love" --I thought that was a great tribute to the PS Sound!

I've heard Billy and Mysterious and both are fanadtic. I've not been able to find the whole album yet.

I loved Let's Change The World with Music, probably my 2nd favourite Sprouts album after Steve McQueen, with From Langley Park in 3rd and Jordan 5th. All four 5 star albums.

Can't wait to hear the full album.

Great song!
I think very few songwriters could capture the self-torment of an aging lustful Lothario without making the main character a pervert. Paddy imbued the lyrics with sly humor and a bittersweet resignation about growing old.

I also rank Let's Change The World With Music my second favourite after Steve McQueen.

I've only listened to three songs on the new album: "The Devil Came A-Calling", "Billy" and "Adolescence". The three are great! I haven't made much effort to find the whole album, since I'm very old school and like to wait until the CD is in my hands. But I've read there's a song called "The Best Jewel Thief In The World" that's a true pop masterpiece.

You know, all this Prefab talk made me revisit "Let's Change The World".... and I have to admit that I'm liking it better now than I did 4 years ago. Again, I always loved "Last of the Great Romantics", and "Sweet Gospel Music" ...

I think that one of the things that turned me off initially was the 'Home -Demo' casio-type keyboards all over the thing. I'm thinking now that if the demos were on acoustic guitar or piano it might've had a warmer feel for me. That's just my take.

At first I thought that I just missed Thomas Dolby's production--He and Paddy made a great combination. But then again, I loved Protest Songs which had no Dolby involvement....

But anyway, songs like "God Watch Over You" and "Music is A Princess" sound better to me now...LOL!

But I think people (well the PS fans, anyway) will like the new album even more...I just think it's pretty solid overall....

I think that's my favorite--(along with The List of impossible Things) and yeah, it definitely takes you back to that period between Steve McQueen/Two Wheels Good and Jordan. Word has it that this may be the first single.....
