I think Jill Scot is a carbon copy of Erykah though. [Edited 9/4/13 4:45am]

Jill's sound and style is distinct from Erykah's. Both go for a poetic vibe, both synthesize traditional R&B and hip-hop sounds, but that's where the similarities end. Their sounds have diverged more and more as time has gone on. Light Of The Sun and New Amerykah Pt. II are proof of that.

Erykah has incorporated many styles from her musical heroes and forged a style all her own even though I would not know how to label it. That is a good thing. Whether that is original or not is left to one’s own interpretation.

Erykah has had me hooked on her musical journey, however lyrically I am very concerned where she is going on her recent releases. For example on the CD version of “Bag Lady” when she gets to the part where she says “I betcha love can make it better…need someone to love you right” that is the Erykah I miss right now. Just so damn soulful with the incredible metaphor about carrying emotional baggage.

I wonder about the pressures of the industry when a Rick Ross can show up on her song “Window Seat”. I wonder did she reach out to him or did she HAVE to do it to even get a single released these days. I am just baffled when artists of Erykah’s tremendous talent start writing songs that she could do either in her sleep or they become so obscure you wonder just how good were those “trees” she was smoking that night. If she has to go underground to give me back the Erykah that I love I will gladly jump through some hoops to find her music.

Sorry, let me rephrase. Jill Scott is a carbon copy of then vintage Erykah. Like most, I don't really feel the recent Erykah material ... but ... "Afro Blue" is lovely though. lol

Honestly, when she came out doing a Billie Holiday impersonation in her earlier recordings, at the dawn of neo-soul, i found it sacrilegious. Ip ut her on my gutless-imitators list and havent looked down her street again.

She may have added some sidewalks, e-paved the road....i unno...i didjt look back. The latest glimpse thrown my way via queen, says she still very much sound like billie.

Billie Holiday is obviously a vocal influence; so are Chaka Khan and Diana Ross.Musically, it's Joi, Me'shell, EWF, Prince, Steely Dan, B.I.G., Sun-Ra, The Emotions, Pink Floyd & OLD school hip hop (ie Slick Rick) & lots of older/obscure jazz acts. She was the first superstar hip-hop/R&B act to actively incorporate electronica into her sound - been doing that shit since 2003 and now everyone follows suit a decade later.Who cares if she's 100% original. She's the fucking illest best live performer with the best band, best act and best albums. Fuck the haters. And I agree - Jill was VERY influenced by Erykah's success/early sound but the two have totally diverged. I don't think we'd have a Janelle Monae or King or Chrisete Michele or Emile Sande (Sp?) or Leanne Lahavas (sp?) or King without her. That's my totally biased opinion tho.
I'll leave it alone babe...just be me

Erykah is under enormous pressure when it is time to pick and promote a single, and she is not impervious to the "add a rapper" formula when it comes to Urban radio formatting. But she is considered a part of hip hop anyway, so it isn't that contrived.

Prince wasn't a total original, The Beatles weren't a total original, Stevie Wonder wasn't a total original, David Bowie wasn't a total original, George Clinton wasn't a total original. Erykah Badu (while I love her) sure as hell wasn't a total original.

Got it, and you have a point. Jill's stayed closer to her original groove, which had some similarities to Badu's, while Badu has gone in different directions.
