A Night With Janis Joplin Show In NYC.

Went to see this show last night for my bday and boy was this show FANTASTIC. I don't know if was a big fan, but I've always liked her and this show made me a fan. It delves into her life, music and her blues musical influences such as Bessie Smith, Aretha, Nina Simone, Etta James, etc. Most of the show was a standing ovation. The lead sounds just like Janis and at certain angles looks like her. The band was tight. I don't want to spoil it, so If you're In NYC anythime soon check it out. What a blast! This will win tons of Tony's believe me. Opening night is Oct 10th.

Since she had so little studio time all you really need is the "Janis" box set from 1993. All phases of her career, and every good song.

If you want to go on, 2nd choice is "Joplin in Concert", because it has "Ego Rock", and fleshed out versions of songs from the first (forgotten) Big Brother album.

Janis is the shit, and the version of "Ball and Chain" from that box set is one of my favorite recordings, ever.

Might try and squeeze this in while i'm in NYC next week.

Some tunes that most know as "Joplin" tunes, are actually covers.
These were written/co-written by an old friend (Jerry Ragovoy: R.I.P.) and were R&B hits first.

...Piece of My Heart (Erma Franklin) & Try (Just A Little Bit Harder) (Lorraine Ellison)

...Cry Baby (Garnet Mimms) & Get It While You Can (Howard Tate)

Mintchip yeah I ordered that boxset last night used on amazon, although the booklet is not included don't really care should be here next week. I have a cassette of her hits, but wanted a CD set and got the boxset for better sound quality. TheAudience for some reason I thought she wrote all her hit songs, but in the show she mentioned she didn't. Yall should check it out. I thought it would be good, but they outdid themselves. I liked the way they set everything up. Don't read reviews (although all great) see it with no images in your head and see it fresh. I actually want to see it again. Buff said cool
