RIP: Marian McPartland, Pianist

The New York Times

I spent decades listening to Ms. MacPartland Sunday morning show on our local NPR station (WBEZ) in Chicago as she interviewed and played the piano with some of the legendary players who mastered the instrument. What I admire about Ms. McPartland show was... anyone learning an instrument received a free class on music theory for an hour.

Of course she is among the famous Jazz musicians who took part in the famous 1958 "A Great Day In Harlem" photo. Ms. Mcpartland is standing between Sahib Shihab and Mary Lou Williams; in back of her are Lawrence Brown and Sonny Rollins. I think she is the last person to pass from that photo... among the musicians that is. RIP.

NPR

Of Marian McPartland's "Twilight World," the great singer Tony Bennett once said, "Well, that song will last forever. It's a beautiful song."

She was SO cool. I remember her talking about her career and how surprised people consistently were that she was a woman "who could play like that". cool I always enjoyed listening to her "Piano Jazz" program on NPR. I hope the continue to run it. She's a great interviewer.

An accomplished artist and one of the best music ambassadors we've had. Rest peacefully.
