What a silly question. Jackie, of course.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

By a very small margin, Rita Coolidge.

I have had both versions since 2006.

What is good about the Cooldige version is that

is has a solid but more moderate energy level

but it still has quality details and subtle humor in its

70s R&B influences.

I could listen to it at any time of day.

Jakie's version has much a more forceful, high energy

feel that is like a good choice for the grand finale of a concert

or for use at a party, personal get psyched up session, etc.

It is similar in overall feel and energy to "Can't Get Next to You"

by the Temptations.

Which is exactly why it isn't as good as Jackie's original. She says she's found a love that lifts her higher - but I don't believe her. Transcendent love makes you ecstatic - there's nothing "moderate" about it.

I heard Rita's version in the drugstore the other day and all I could think was "if this is as high as she's ever been, she must be one cold fish."

I'll take Rita's version, probably because it's the first version I heard growing up. Now that I've heard Jackie's, I'd still take Rita's !
