what was great about it

you had a great balance

even when we had many young acts present, we had established acts, mature acts still contributing, if anything, the presence of the mature acts is what made it possible for the young acts to thrive....

even as the Jackson Five was prominent, we still had the Lou Rawls of the world gracing us

a group like G.Q......you could see how GUY patterned their act and style from those guys...

What a list. cool At that time, everyone out could sing, play, or both. No faking back then, or just getting by. Talent is all up and through that list.

Now, I get served some lukewarm junk, while being told it's HOT. No, I know what hot is, and that ain't it.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

A disco group and not the real singers on the records. They did the appearances and were on the album covers. There were also several "bands" in the 1960's and 1970's that were really studio musicians and session singers where they would send out other people for the appearances. A few had Ron Dante or Toni Wine singing on the records. Shalamar originally was one of these kinds of groups. Uptown Festival became a hit, so they found some people to tour (Gary Mumford, Jody Watley, Jeffrey Daniel) and they became the group. They were on the 1st album cover picture. Gary does sing on some of the songs on the album, but Jody & Jeffrey are not on the album at all. Not much that happens in the music business is really new. Milli Vanilli wasn't the first front group, it's just many of the other fake groups were not on TV and did not do concerts. Obviously, The Archies could not tour, but they had a hit record. razz lol

Bumping this thread before it gets buried just because that was an awesome era of music. When we were experiencing it in our youth we didn't know how good we had it. I had a 8-track recorder and I used to record those songs off the radio when I was a kid. I made some awesome mixtapes, too bad I no longer have anything to play them on, lol.
