Yes, I also thought that was a funny and clever way to handle the question. Why do reporters think they can ask that? Cause you know if Janelle says "in a relationship", the next question would be "with who?" I don't blame her at all for wanting to keep that private.

Yes, I also thought that was a funny and clever way to handle the question. Why do reporters think they can ask that? Cause you know if Janelle says "in a relationship", the next question would be "with who?" I don't blame her at all for wanting to keep that private.

that would have been the second question absolutely cool by the way from another recent interview with a journalist that was at one listening session of the record :they really want to know who she is with lol

Is she nervous about letting people see any more of her than this fictional representation of herself?

“Am I nervous?” she says, scrunch-browed and incredulous. “I’m not scared of human beings. I think I just… I do things on my own. You have a right to go to work and reveal what you want to reveal about yourself, and that’s the same approach that I take.”

The difference being, of course, that going to work for Janelle Monáe is rather more interesting than it is for most Average Joebodys. One of the evils of being a pop star is that those people want to get that little bit closer to the artist.

“It’s important to have boundaries with the public because everybody’s intentions are not always out of love and in your best interest. So you have to protect yourself and your family and your privacy from those who have no respect for it. Some things can become a bigger focus than your music if you put it out there. I try to make sure I stay on-message and draw attention to the things that I feel are more beneficial.”

Well, now that she’s a success in the public eye and a critical darling, people just want to know more about her life. Where she came from, what she likes, who she likes, maybe who she loves. But, as delightfully and professionally as she has done all morning, she rebuffs the thought. “They know the right things. They know the most important things.”

Is it enjoyable to have that control?

“I’m an artist. My job is to start dialogue. And when you hear ‘The Electric Lady’, it will be thought-provoking music that deals with sexuality, that deals with religion, that deals with rebellion, that deals with love.”

There’s a small pause, to allow me to digest, before she says with total finality, “So there you go.” Which seems to be her way of saying, “That’s all you’re getting out of me.”

All the statuesque statements of artistic credibility wouldn’t work unless there was something to back it up. Fortunately, as she becomes one of the world’s most important pop artists, Janelle Monáe continues to back up her quirks, her insecurities and her maniacal desire for creative control. ‘The Electric Lady’ is proof that a singular vision is enough to create an artistic legacy to rival the greats. Two albums in and, so far, not a step out of place. We might never get to know the Janelle Monáe, but as long as she’s so firmly in control of her art, we’ll only ever see what she wants us to.

Yeah, I saw that too. I am guessing Janelle won't be in the video - which would be too bad (even though that little girl is adorable). I think they are still in Atlanta trying to get "Electric Lady" finished and turned in. I got this reply from @Wondaland about 10 days ago. (By the way, the recent problems Serpan has had with 3EG and Prince have really made me appreciate how well Janelle and her team treat their fans!)

Are you Italian, by the way? I lived in Italy for 11 years (Perugia).

I also bought Janelle's CDs, even though I already was listening to the music for free. Same reason. Do you have the link to that video, by the way? I'd love to watch it.

I have been to Genoa - it's a beautiful port town. Oh, I miss Italy! I used to teach ESL there - I wish my students had learned English as well as you (.. or are you a native speaker?) Are you on Twitter? If you want, follow me. I always like to add positive people, with good taste in music smile

Some quotes from her:

-There was a lot of confusion and nonsense where I grew up, so I reacted by creating my own little world … I began to see how music could change lives, and I began to dream about a world where every day was like anime and Broadway, where music fell from the sky and anything could happen.

-I feel myself becoming the fearless person I have dreamt of being. Have I arrived? No. But I'm constantly evolving and challenging myself to be unafraid to make mistakes.

-I always think about the next generation and creating a different blueprint for them. That's my goal: to let them know there's another way.

-I believe it's time that women truly owned their superpowers and used their beauty and strength to change the world around them.

-I don't do a lot of collaborations that I don't believe in. Actually, I don't do any collaborations that I don't believe in

I don't even know at what age I started, because it's always been there. Performing... creating... it's in my DNA.

I'm a believer that the more I'm giving, the happier I am, and the more beautiful my exterior will be.

I'll refer to my music in color, like 'This song needs to be bright red.'

I'm attracted to things that scare me, like 'Psycho,' my favorite Hitchcock movie.

-Children go with whatever makes them feel good - like if that's the color green or orange, they do that with their clothes. As I've grown older, everything reversed. My music, my personality - onstage those things became my colors.

-Honestly, I don't believe in menswear. I focus on what pieces are most timeless, transcendent, match my lifestyle, remain remarkable, and command intriguing attention across the room at an art gallery.

-It's unfortunate that a lot of people think African-American female artists are monolithically R&B this-or-that, don't have to do anything by default

- When I got into the music industry, I wasn't focused on being the most famous artist or even getting a major record deal. It was just to make music on my own terms or create my own image, do my own hair, do my own makeup.

-We don't all have to take the same coordinates to get to the same destination. Being a young African American female artist, I want to open doors for young black girls.

-I really just want to encourage and inspire people to use their freedom in a positive way and in a way that is inspiring to other people. I want to continue to pass down the seeds of change within the world. I think that it can start with just one person. Just like a rumor can get carried on, so can inspiration.

-I would also like to open a non-profit organization for young girls who come from dis-advantaged environments; and focus on their self esteem. I really want to be able to counsel them and want them to feel safe, and to feel like they can talk to me and my staff. To perfect their interests and crafts.

-Well, I know that I am a fighter and I will fight for something that I am very passionate about. My inner spirit, even when I am down, never gives up.

-I have lived and been through a lot and I challenge myself all the time to change for the better.

-I wear makeup and all of these other things, but I don't get caught up in it. I know what janelle monae Robinson looks like everyday, and I am comfortable with that.

-I try to find peace when I wake up in the morning. Sometimes I don't go to bed until 4:00 in the morning because I am either recording or I am just up talking about ideas. So when I get up I just try to find my peace and ask God to give me peace for the day.

-I have lost family members from getting gunned down through violence and drugs, and all of that different type of stuff. You never know when someone is going to call you and say something has happened to one of your loved ones. I just ask God to give me peace and strength for whatever comes into my life that day, and to be of some inspiration to someone new.

-People always want to categorize you and say oh, you are in this category, but there is nothing that I limit myself to doing. Categorizing myself will only limit my growth

-My mom is a great artist and she inspired me when I was young to sketch and draw, but I never took it seriously. Now I find that when I have writers block, I find myself sketching these different things that represent the song

-I am going to take art more seriously. I most definitely want to leave behind art, and that does not just mean music.

right? biggrin and have you all noticed the kind of prince earcuff she has on lately? wink

in the cover of the single and also in these pictures ..

there was also a small interview along with the pictures..she spoke about some topics...

On Love:
An android is my preference.I’m someone who sees your spirit and soul. I love passionate androids; one that knows exactly what it’s going to do in life. I love smart androids, idealists, leaders, but good followers. Androids that are compassionate, honest, can make me laugh, knows how to handle an Electric Lady and supports an Electric Lady’s dreams, and wings when it’s time to fly.”

On a Potential Rap Album:
I love rap music, I love hip hop—not it all—but I will say I use rap as a way to communicate. Singing and performing is a way to get across this urgency that I often want to get across in my music. I wrote the rap for Q.U.E.E.N. faster than the lyrics.”

On Motherhood:
When the time is right. Everything is about timing. Right now, I’m giving birth to this album, the Electric Lady. I feel like I need Erykah Badu because she is a midwife and it’s time to push this baby on out. It is one I’m ready to go out in this world and change lives and do something great for her community.

On Her “Dance Apocalyptic” Makeover:
I was inspired to create a female rock star. I love creating historic Electric Ladies. I think an Electric Lady isn’t to be marginalized. As the narrator and creator of these characters, I have lived by not making myself a slave to my own interpretations of who I am or a slave to anybody’s interpretations of who I am. I think expressing yourself through video and art is another form of communication; a way of rewriting history and putting these women—strong, powerful, bold women—out there.
