"Let You Go" is out now on iTunes. Her full-length album, The Spell, arrives late this fall. I, for one, can't wait.

Katy Perry - Prism

Perry will return with "Prism" in October, she announced via an unexpected viral campaign.

Katy Perry is making a statement -- with a semi-truck.

An enormous golden truck with "Katy Perry - Prism - 10-22-13" emblazoned on its sides, top and back was spotted in Los Angeles on Monday, as pointed out on Twitter by Perry pal Adam Lambert.-Billboard.com-

At age 19, Lex Land recorded her debut album, "Orange Days on Lemon Street," which critics deemed “a fantastic mix of honey sweet folk and dense, beat driven folk-rock.” In 2011, she released a more eclectic, electrified, and genre-hopping sophomore record, "Were My Sweetheart To Go." Land was a finalist on NBC’s “The Voice” and a member of Team Blake in 2012. Both of her full-length albums earned “Best of iTunes” honors, and also garnered song placements in several television shows including "Private Practice," "Bones," and "Castle." We have collected our top 10 songs from these albums and compiled them into this exclusive offering for Noisetrade.

New Interview the Soul Survivor Bobby Womack
July 26, 2013

Link

''People think you have to go through a lot of changes to become a soul singer’, Bobby Womack says, ‘You just have to go through life.’ It is early afternoon in Womack’s London hotel room. The bed is unmade, but Womack is reclining on the couch, hooded eyes half closed, stirring now as his factotum, Mr Fullen, a slim man elegantly attired in a suit and tie, arrives with lunch. It is takeout chow-mein. ‘Box or bowl?’ Mr Fullen asks, forking half of the food into a plastic container. Womack is 69, with sparse greying hair, a creased and careworn face, dressed in jeans and a T-shirt. He stirs himself into a sitting position and reaches for the box, and a bottle of Coke.

He has the most beautiful hands – a ‘gi-tar’ player’s hands, to borrow his enunciation – with long tapering fingers that he periodically spreads across his face as he talks, as if to shield his eyes and thoughts from whatever baleful forces may be abroad.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

If you hear a bit of Black Keys in this guy's sound, fear not because none other than Dan Auerbach produced the album. This is fairly recent for this year 2013, take a listen to Hanni El Khatib. The album is called Head In The Dirt .

Aluna Francis on Body Music and Meeting Her Bandmate Online

August 2, 2013

Back in 2009, George Reid was surfing MySpace and discovered Aluna Francis’s voice. Unable to resist her siren, he contacted her and offered to mix a track. Thus was the beginning of the R&B duo AlunaGeorgea name that has swiftly gained notoriety in the U.K. and U.S. With just a few singles here and there, the duo was both shortlisted for the 2013 BRITs Critics’ Choice award, then finished second place in the BBC’s Sound of 2013 poll.

All the while, the stylish pair has shown up in the pages ofElle and British Vogue. This week marks the release of their first-ever album, Body Music, which, Francis insists, “doesn’t sound like any other album.” VF Daily caught up with the 24-year-old chanteuse as she rode the train home from a Kingston event and asked her what she’s listening to, and about her upcoming collaboration with men’s-wear designer Joseph Turvey. Highlights from our chat:

VF Daily : Congrats on the release of your first album. Did you expect to be where you are right now two years ago?

No, we’ve taken everything step by step with a positive outlook and just made sure every step of the way that we were enjoying the music. Everything that’s happened is a really lovely surprise.

The bio your publicist sent me makes parallels between you, Destiny’s Child, and Aaliyah. How do you see your music in relation to theirs?

That’s funny, because I wouldn’t say they are direct influences on me, actually. I’m just aware of them. I should probably edit that. Someone must have been conflicted about what I said. But I love Aaliyah. Destiny’s Child—[Laughs] —I guess I wouldn’t compare us. It’s just their sound and their society is way bigger than us, and way more accessible, I guess.

What about your music isn’t accessible?

It’s a bit more off-kilter. It’s less immediate. The kind of layers that we have in the music may be a bit more subtle. I play around with the language and the lyrics as much as I can. There are a lot of intricacies in the music that make it less direct, if you will.

When you write your songs, do you think about who your audience is?

I think about whether I’m being honest and clear about my communication. If I want to talk about something complex, I’ll use language that’s first immediate but that you can sort of look back at later and find further meaning. I don’t like to make it really hard right at the start.

What was your process for fast-paced songs like “Lost and Found”? How do you keep those from becoming too poppy?

In order to sum up the kind of rebound scenario, I just wanted something slightly tongue and cheeky, and a little bit paretic. You don’t necessarily say those words, but you kind of think them. It’s that kind of simple metaphor. Get the whole idea about what I’m talking about in one sentence. It’s not like I’m hard done by it, but the character has been dumped, so it’s getting the duality of emotions across.

I think its great that you and George met on the Internet. Was it at all weird to work with a stranger?

It wasn’t really strange, because we didn’t get to know each other at all. Basically my old co-writer—we were chatting, just doing a production chat. I was just along for the conversation, so I never spoke to George until I first met him. Even then I didn’t even speak to him really. I might’ve said, like, “Hi.” And then I was in the studio with him. So it was very strange in the sense that I had no backstory with George.

But then you realized you two could work together . . .

On our first day of making music, we clicked musically and we came out with a song that was pretty much finished by the end of the day. We were like, Wow, that was fun.

What have you learned about him since?

It took a little while for me to find out he’s a good dancer.

What has he found out about you?

He’s probably found out that I laugh at TV shows really, really loudly, or if it’s scary, I will scream a lot and talk to the screen and stuff. I was watching a TV show called Luther the other day. I was absolutely crapping my pants. It was actually quite scary.

For this album, what were your musical inspirations? What were you listening to that inspired your process?

Would you hold on one second? I’m just getting on the train. [Excuse me!]

You know when they just shove into the door and just stop?

There isn’t really an album that we sourced from. Our album doesn’t sound like any other album, so we wouldn’t really be able to trace back to our influences to see what other music inspired this particular album. But me and George really both love Radiohead. That’s, like, our favorite band.

We both listen to a lot of instrumental, electronic music. George listens to Flying Lotus and Criss Cross and the L.A. beat scene—people like that. Essex Twins, Boards of Canada.

As far as singers, I like PJ Harvey, Jeff Buckley, and the Knife, whose voices I really enjoy.

You’ve been featured in Vogue, and Elle, and played at Fashion Week before. What are you wearing these days?

I’ve been wearing a lot of the Jessica Barley collection. They’re playing with some boyish shapes—boxer shorts paired with a girly crop or something like that. And they have some really cool pants. I like Acne. I go for that Scandinavian, almost androgynous kind of look.

I think the fashion world has always been a strong supporter of us right from the beginning. They keep their ear to the ground for new music. They’ve kept an eye on us and kind of invited us into their throne, as it were, to be a soundtrack for their looks. We just recently did the Armani Garden party. I do enjoy collaborating with fashion, and I think we’re going to be working with Joseph Turvey, who showed at London’s men’s-wear fashion week. He’s going to edit some men’s-wear fashion for me. Some stuff for me to wear on tour. Because I can’t fit in his boy sizes.

What are you listening to on tour?

We love the Flume album at the moment. It’s awesome. That’s for the party zone, with, like, Kendrick Lamar. To chill out afterwards, and roam out late, James Blake is really good for that. Obviously, the Karin Park album as well.

The most important question of all—what will you be reading on the rest of your train ride home?

I read lots of general papers that are free on the subway. You catch up on the kind of daily crappy news. [Laughs]

Terence Oliver Blanchard is an American jazz trumpeter, bandleader, composer, arranger, and film score composer. Since he emerged on the scene in 1980 with the Lionel Hampton Orchestra and then shortly thereafter with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, Blanchard has been a leading artist in jazz. He was an integral figure in the 1980s jazz resurgence, having recorded several award-winning albums and having performed with the jazz elite.

He is known as a straight-ahead artist in the hard bop tradition but has recently developed an African-fusion style of playing that makes him unique from other trumpeters on the performance circuit. It is as a film composer that Blanchard reaches his widest audience. His trumpet can be heard on nearly fifty film scores; more than forty bear his unmistakable compositional style.

Since 2000, Blanchard has served as Artistic Director at the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz. As of August 2011, he was named the Artistic Director of the Henry Mancini Institute at the University of Miami Frost School of Music. He lives in the Garden District of New Orleans with his wife and four children. -via Wiki
