Now I'm not saying Janet or Mary j blige were the first to do it more regularly, but Janet had heavy d on alright, mc lyte on you want this, coolio on runaway, chuck d on new agenda, the rap in best things in life are free, so it was already starting but Mariah went overboard since after fantasy cause the results were great. It worked really well with butterfly too, but became a distraction after rainbow. She did not need guest rappers to carry all her tracks

How about we just blame out the 90's, pretty simple, i mean though the collabo still exists now, no one cares or even buys it, in the 90's it was a commercial tactic to sell more albums and re issue your already BLOATED CD full of filler again and have people buy it again. But the 90's are long done thank god for many reasons, i really am glad that the days of people selling a million records is long gone, and im really glad that NO ONE cares who French Montana or fucking Wale is rapping with this week, it all sucks and no one buys it, thats why in a few months they will be replaced. Like LL said, Rap was sold out, for chart positions, like many other things that get cashed in on, whether its British Groups in the 60's or Disco wackness in the 70's or hair bands in the 80's Grunge and Rb singing groups in the 90's it all ends, and then POP bands in the 00's its a done deal now, all of it, now nothing sells so everyone is trying to just cash in on something that sold once before. And then you will have someone like MAriah who all of a sudden decides lets sing with "Miguel", this rap thing aint selling for me anymore.

THAT^ a damn lie. rolleyes Excuse you, but Chaka Khan featuring Mellie Mel, Jody Watley featuring Eric B & Rakim, Rick James featuring Roxanne Shante, Michael Jackson and/or Janet Jackson featuring Heavy D, and too many other BEFORE Mariah did it. wink

.

And beside, I blame Quincy Jones, Dr.Dre AND Sean "Puffy" Combs for going too far with the "featuring" gimmick.

[Edited 5/4/13 9:40am]

Calm your illuminati man tits no need to kcool eye roll me lol

But they may have done it but she did with every fruit of the month rapper and on every remix so why Jody & Chaka might have been the first Mariah made it what it is today.

ONE MORE THING: F*** a Nicki Minaj! She was THE worst of the "Mariah featuring ______" episodes.

.

That is all.

The 90's as a whole wasn't the problem. It was mostly 94-99 that was a mess.

LOL Mariah did NOT start the trend of pop singers featuring rappers on their songs. Where do people get that BS from? There were many, many, many, many, many singers who were featuring rappers on their songs back when she was still singing those Lite FM pop ballads.

Mariah isn't that bad. I can't say that I've liked everything she's done but I'm not sure I believe that Mariah was making the kind of music that moved her when she first came out, as great as it may have been. I think a lot of what she's been doing with the rappers and current stuff is really what moves her. I've chalked it all up to growing pains with Mariah. Yes, I know how old she is. the good thing about her is that whenever she gets ready she can still come back to the good singing because she still has the ability for it and her writing skills aren't too shabby.

I go back to the beginning, where she did an interview about her first album saying that the record company made her do something more commercial than what she really wanted to do, but that as she moved forward she would not be so middle of the road with her music.

That was a nice idea, wasn't it?

She didn't start this trend, but she simply does it a little too often.Doesn't she realize that most of her fans want to hear her voice and not some random rapper?

I am being for real! a lot of the thing's y'all complain about regarding how ''bad'' modern music is a lot of it can be contributed towards Mariah Carey.

She started that fucking rapper with a pop singer guest doing a hookon every song mess... and now it is like half the songs out now have a rapper with some pop star on the hook!

And she has gotten every rapper she can fit in her vag err i mean roster of albums and singles without mercy! i mean she will work with ANY rapper or r&B artist.

She also started that act innocent and then show less clothing and crossover crap as well no no no don't say Madonna cause she was a hoe since Lucky Star and admitted it!

Rihanna and dozens of other pop stars started with the cutsy pop singles then started going towards the more suggested clothesless hits.

She also started that entire remix thing... no no she is not the first to do remixes it was going on since the 80's but she popularized doing a remix for EVERY damn single she released and getting the rapper of the month on it and now we have a million remixes with rappers on radio rolleyes

Her worst crime is that she made Nick Cannon relevant after that song Gigolo he did with R. Kelly... eek lol

I like some of her stuff don't get me wrong but a lot of people on the board seem to love her... yet criticize the hell of modern music when half the shit wrong with is stuff she helped to popularize.

And what you left unsaid is that the rest is the fault of Nirvana!

Mariah HAS gone overboard with the whole Hip Hop/rapper thing. When she first did it, it was new and different. NOW, it's cliche. She's a class act, has multi-octaves coupled with Minnie Riperton-ish whistle register. Why she inSISTS upon recording the passe crap she puts out is beyond me. However, we cannot blame HER so much as her recording company. Afterall, it's these COMPANIES who make their roster artists release the garbage they do more than it's the fault of the artist(s.) Case in point: Jessica Sanchez, Charice, Leona Lewis. 'Nuff said. sad

Actually, Chaka Khan started it. I dont recall any guest rappers on a Pop or R&B song before "I Feel For You".

Mariah used to be one of the greatest singers of our time. Back in the early 90's when she was making music where her voice was the focal point, nobody could touch her. It's when she was given the freedom to do the kind of music she wanted to do (shit-hop), wanting to attract a younger audience and her voice started to deteriorate, that's when the problems came in. But, even today, when she makes her voice the focal point (i.e., "Merry Christmas II You"), it reminds us of the early days, why so many of us fell in love with her in the first place.

Do not make that bet because you'd lose everything you have, LOL.

I will say this - when you listen to the substandard "rock" that followed them, Nirvana doesn't sound like complete junk. Maybe only like, say, 87.24% junk. smile

He does have a good point. If it wasn't for the success of Nirvana I doubt we would have had the alternative movement which pretty much burned the body of the dead horse that hair metal made

^umm Modern Rock/Alternative music was doing quite well before Nivana. I would go as far to say that Nirana did more damage to MR/Alt than anything else. Lots of good bands got left behind cause of the grunge movement.

TELL HIM THE TRUTH lazy lol

And idk i love grunge and it seems more post grunge AKA post Nirvana is what killed shit. Sure maybe Nirvana helped but the 90's still had a strong influx of different alt rock going on

You had Nine Inch Nails getting huge in 92 and BLOWING UP in 94 and Manson not soon after... so you had the industrial alt bands coming.

And then there The Smashing Pumpkins type and they reached there peak way after Nirvana had faded.

Then you had the brit pop/rock of Oasis, Blur & The Verve coming in as well.

there were many different types of alternative coming in so to blame it all on Nirvana is silly lol
