Lauryn Hill signs a five-song, $1 million deal with Sony to avoid prison

R&B star may avoid prison time by cashing in on $1 million label deal. Most people can't avoid serious tax evasion charges by signing a $1 million record deal, but then again, most people aren't Lauryn Hill. The former Fugees star has reportedly inked a new deal with Sony Music, which may help in avoiding prison time for three years' worth of shrugged-off tax returns.Last year, Hill pleaded guilty for failing to pay federal taxes on $1.8 million earned between 2005 and 2007. On Monday (Apr. 22), a federal judge postponed Hill's tax evasion sentencing, giving her until May 6 to pay off her liability, which now stands at $504,000 after Hill made a payment of $50,000 late last year.During Monday's proceeding in Newark, N.J., however, Assistant U.S. Attorney Sandra Moser revealed that Hill had signed a new deal with Sony, and was set to receive $1 million for recording five new songs, plus additional money for an entire album's worth of music, according to the New Jersey. However, Hill has yet to finish writing and recording the new songs.Judge Madeline Cox took Monday's proceeding as an opportunity to scold the 37-year-old Hill for failing to make a dent in her tax returns. "This is not someone who stands before the court penniless… Actions speak louder than words," Cox said.Hill has not released a new album since 2002's "MTV Unplugged No. 2.0." According to Moser, the singer's 2012 tour did not generate as much revenue as she had hoped for.orginally posted from lipstick alley

Had to hold her almost at gun point to release new music... disbelief

I was wondering why she didn't do this in the first place: sign a new record deal and use some of the advance money to pay off her tax bill.Sounds simple enough.

I Love Lauryn... i love that album, unplugged & all the unreleased accoustic material to death.

But it's time to meet the fucking taxman boo confused i have to pay taxes as do you and if i got that deep i would be in prison fighting off Large Larry and creating storylines for a new season of OZ.

She doesn't want to make an album.. so i don't see how this will help or better the situation. Lauryn need's to take some responsibilities for real....

If she had just paid her taxes, she could continue NOT recording, lol

Maybe it had to do with there being an actual OFFER that would work for her.

I still think this is so bizarre. A world I don't live in. Court on Monday, and "tada" there is a million dollars in the waiting.

You DID suggest this. Maybe there was no offer in sight?

When u look up "double standard" in the dictionary it has a picture of Lauryn Hill. I can respect her stances against music, and fame and this and that, shit Kurt Cobain blew his head off because of it, but Lauryn is full of it at this point, she's a slave to the system until it can keep her out of jail. She doesnt want "label money" but hey if it keeps me out of jail i will take it. Lauryn was collectin all that money from labels and the benefits of being on a label, and yet not paying tax on it, complaining for years how she was a victim....etc.....but lets face if she was an unknown, she'd be in jail or at least not given an option to pay her way out, ive seen people threaten with jail for $500 debts.

If this is true, Hill got a lucky break lol I wonder if this alleged project will be any good though. Having to make music under (what I assume) a deadline, combined with the idea that her heart isn't in it (she's just doing it for money) might result in horrible songs disbelief

That's why I can't take her seriously anymore. All that shit and then she does that? sigh Whatever.

Lastdecember you said what i was going to say pretty much lol

One can only hear so many of her ''the industry is evil'' type stories before it all just becomes a haevn for excuse.

The preacher man from over a decade ago and others have brainwashed that poor girl and she think's that GOD doesn't want her to pay taxes and that she won't give into the man... so she won't pay off her shit confused

Lauryn wake up and smell that education coffee cause the miseducation was years ago and it's time to learn.

Sista girl shoulda paid her taxes. Everyone else has and does. What makes her think she's any different? In truth, no one even knows who she is anymore. Too "Old School" and probably "washed up." It's what happens when u don't put out music for over a decade. Clearly, the MISeducation has paid off. Dumb girl, dumb moves, dumb everything. She needs 2 get over herself. The judge is right.

Hungry? Just look in the mirror and get fed up.

Anyway, I think I'm gonna write her a song now. It's called "Crazy lady". It could be the title track.

Don't matter what you pay me
Ain't gonna let you play me
I'm not you crazy lady

Blah blah blah system
Blah blah blah victim
Blah blah blah phony
Suck my dick Sony

This shit writes itself. Feel free to add a verse.

I saw recent and i mean VERY recent performance and her voice isn't as strong... but it's still there.

If she works on it a bit more it could be in good shape again... but i doubt she will do that.

I hope I'm wrong but I'll be amazed if it's anything other than terrible. Good luck to her because she was/is so talented.

Obviously, we don't know Lauryn personally, but IMO she is messed up bad. This new album deal could be the end of her. I doubt this is what she wants to do, so once it's done she will whine about how she only did it for the money and because she was being threatened with jailtime. It's a sad situation all around. She will blame everyone from the record execs to the government to racists and everyone inbetween. Until she takes responsibility, she is lost. I really hope the new cd is decent, but............

Just for the record - her Miseducation is one of my favourite cd's.

This $1 million might not help if it is like a regular deal where she has to MAKE BACK that money through sales.

Unless she's gettin' that '98 promo (cover of every magazine, every single on radio) it will be really hard to move those units.

I agree.Plus,I have a bad feeling about this deal.I doubt that Lauryn will get the album done in a reasonable amount of time, which could create problems between her and Sony. There should be a clause in the contract that lists a confirmed date for Lauryn to turn in the album.

If I understand it right she gets a million $ advance for the promise of delivering 5 tunes. She can use that money to get out of trouble with the IRS.

If she never delivers those 5 tunes then she will be in trouble with the label.

Me, I'd rather be in trouble with a label.

So she takes the money, gives it to the IRS and then reneges on the contract. lol

Lauryn Hill Lifts Lid On New Label / Pens Letter To Address Financial Woes

Letter via Lauryn:

It has been reported that I signed a new record deal, and that I did this to pay taxes. Yes, I have recently entered into an agreement with Sony Worldwide Entertainment, to launch a new label, on which my new music will be released. And yes, I am working on new music.

I’ve remained silent, after an extensive healing process. This has been a 10+ year battle, for a long time played out behind closed doors, but now in front of the public eye. This is an old conflict between art and commerce… free minds, and minds that are perhaps overly tethered to structure. This is about inequity, and the resulting disenfranchisement caused by it. I’ve been fighting for existential and economic freedom, which means the freedom to create and live without someone threatening, controlling, and/or manipulating the art and the artist, by tying the purse strings.

It took years for me to get out of the ‘parasitic’ dynamic of my youth, and into a deal that better reflects my true contribution as an artist, and (purportedly) gives me the control necessary to create a paradigm suitable for my needs. I have been working towards this for a long time, not just because of my current legal situation, but because I am an artist, I love to create, and I need the proper platform to do so.

The nature of my new business venture, as well as the dollar amount reported, was inaccurate, only a portion of the overall deal. Keep in mind, my past recordings have sold over 50,000,000 units worldwide, earning the label a tremendous amount of money (a fraction of which actually came to me).

Only a completely complicated set of traps, manipulations, and inequitable business arrangements could put someone who has accomplished the things that I have, financially in need of anything. I am one artist who finds value in openly discussing the dynamics within this industry that force artists to compromise or distort themselves and what they do, rather than allowing them to make the music that people need. There are volumes that could (and will) be said.

MLH
