I just bought tickets for a Mariah Carey concert. What am i in for?

So i bought tickets to go with with a fan as a suprise, im not much of a fan, know the hits but thats about it.

What kind of "show" does she put on for her pricey tickets...don't really hear much about her live shows at all..

It's hard to say. For an artist who has had so many hits, she tours incredibly rarely. I never understand why that is. As she gets older, it's going to be increasingly harder for her to have radio hits, so I would think she would want to rely on touring for income but she seems to have little interest in doing live dates.

Mariah is a studio singer.

Expect 50-70% of the vocals to be pre-recorded.

She's NOT a performer.

Mariah doesn't need the money like a lot of other artists. Remember she co-wrote 90 percent of her hits and had a huge $100,000,000 deal in the 90s. Then, she left Sony and went to Virgin and got paid a crazy amount to leave (I think it was around 30 Million).

If you can find this dvd, you'll get a good idea of what she's like live.

I saw her on this tour and thought it was a good show, but she was a tad dull. She sounded good, but there were a LOT of pre-recorded vocals.

She is one of those people that are singers and not performers.

If she focused more on writing some good R&B cuts instead of trendy music she might not have to worry about touring. Mariah is not known for being a performer. She is a singer.

As someone who has been in love with Mariah since she basically arrived on the music scene love fallinluv , I'd like to say that her voice will transcend space and time and ring heavenly sounds into your ears and leave you in a state of bliss and ecstasy. cloud9

But........

If I have to be blatantly honest, she's pretty much a singing diva only, and she has little stage presence for being such a huge superstar diva. Having said that, when she's on her vocal game, she can sound very good live. She pretty much is expected to hit the high notes on her biggest hits, so she tends to space them out during her concert. While she usually has a crew of dancers at her shows, they are mostly there to dance around and behind her while she stands around in her micro dresses and six inch heels looking fabulous. Nevertheless, she has been relying on pre-recorded vocal tracks a lot more lately, and when she performs the "Fantasy remix", she totally lipsynchs her routine. rolleyes And with the way she has been treating her voice over the years she has been straining to hit some of her signature vocals live.

Now where is Mariah performing? Is this an arena show, a smaller venue, or a more intimate club show? If this is an arena or even larger theater show, expect a lot of costume changes.

Its a stadium desgned for maybe 50,000?

Its been re-configured for Mariahs show, she is only playing to a corner of the venue, in an "intimate setting"...

its not close to sold out yet which is worrying being shes only played one show in her entire career in Melbourne..

Anyways yeah i wont expect much, its a present for a super-fan who couldnt afford tickets so its not really for me.

Im sure i'll enjoy it.

I found her absolutely mesmerizing, and the best concert I have ever been to.

That DVD mentioned above was a very good capsule of that show.

She has a gazillion hits and is a lot of fun. She can sing live.

Like I said earlier, I love her probably more than any musical artist on Earth. And I've been to at least three of her live concerts, which she does not do often. But trying to be objective, she's nowhere near as good a live artist as Madonna, Beyonce, or the man who this site is named for. prince Having said that, if you love Mariah, you'll enjoy seing her in concert. love excited

I have most of her albums and she's in my top 5, but the only one in my top 5 I'm ok with not seeing though I was devastated I couldn't go for Mimi. I don't mind not going cause she's not a dancer and pre records her vocals. Someone with her voice and range us going to be singing live if they want my money or forget it.

But even if she doesn't need the money, I would think she would want to perform live. Most artists even those who don't need money love performing live because of the energy of the crowd and the excitement of all those people cheering for you. It's a rush for them and much more fun than being in a studio.

Why does she have to be a performer to do live dates? She doesn't have to dance or do other stuff. If she's a singer, why can't she just stand there and sing? Not every touring artist has elaborate stuff going on, some if they have great voices, just sing.

Whitney wasn't a dancer either but Whitney knew how to work a stage and Mariah never could..

What are you in for? Well, a little warbling, the occassional dog call, and probably some random, disjointed story telling. Oh.. and some big ole boobies. Throw in the occassional decent song or 2 and I think that you'll be prepared for the experience.

This is what you want...This is what you get.

Very true. I'm not sure if she doesn't enjoy performing live or not, I've never heard her say.

A lot of acts (like Mariah, Celine Dion, etc.) don't like doing tours because they are really hard on your voice. I've read that Celine won't speak at all when she is touring/performing for a lot of dates.

I agree that MC could do a minimal show without all of the bells and whistles, but that is not her personality. She likes the "diva" aspect of the show. Not to mention that a lot of her songs are r&b and hip-hop based trax and they don't go over well without all of the excess.

When I saw her on the Mimi tour, I was hoping for a long set of hits where it was just her singing with some great staging (kinda like Barbara Streisand), but didn't get that. She did a few songs like that, but during that tour, she did a lot of her r&b/pop stuff and not the ballads.

You think so? I never cared for Whitney's stage presence. What made Whitney special to me was her intrepretion of the song live. I could forgive her for the stage prescence if she was KILLING the song live.

MC's stage prescence has improved over the years, but that's not saying much.

Saw her back in 2010 during her Angel's Advocate' tour and she sounded GREAT. She interacted with the crowd, joked around a lot and genuinely tried to connect with her fans. She wasn't that much of a diva I was expecting to see and I was really surprised by that.

Honestly the best way to find out what to expect from an artist's concert that you're not familiar with is youtube videos. Just look up some recent concert footages and judge yourself.
