Pop Legend Patti Page, R.I.P. (1927-2013)

Pop singer Patti Page, the biggest-selling female artist of the 1950s, has died.

The singer passed away on New Year's Day in Encinitas, California. She was 85.

Page, whose birth name was Clara Ann Fowler, scored an incredible 111 chart hits over her long career, including "(How Much Is That) Doggie in the Window" and "Tennessee Waltz."

She released 50 albums, and scored 14 platinum singles. In addition, she was a popular TV performer, and appeared in movies like Elmer Gantry and Boys' Night Out.

Because her songs often crossed over to the country charts, Page received the Pioneer Award from the Academy of Country Music. The Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame gave her its Living Legend Award, and she received a Grammy Award in 1999. This year, she was to receive a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and according to her rep, she was looking forward to attending the ceremony on February 9.

In addition to the worlds of pop and country music, Page's influence even extended to the world of alternative rock: The White Stripes recorded her 1950s hit "Conquest" on their album Icky Thump.

Page is survived by her son and daughter, as well as her sister, Peggy Layton.

Wow. When I was little I could never get away from hearing "How Much Is That Doggie in the Window?" whenever I saw something on TV especially when they compared that song to the early years of rock and roll. lol

RIP.

"(How Much Is That) Doggie in the Window" is one of the most memorable novelty songs of the pre-Rock era, and a personal favorite of my own.

Well depends on the source the title was coming from. When Teena tied I remember some sites saying Pop Icon Teena Marie...

Not to derail this topic further off base but I usually saw just Motown singer or funk singer or Ivory Queen of Soul. I never saw icon in reference to her. Or maybe she was and I missed it.

Damn, just read that she died just over a few weeks after she was to receive a Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award. And she just celebrated her 85th birthday in late November. eek

Wow... apparently she was still performing but died in a nursing home... what a way to go out. rose

Her talents reached far and wide, even I'm familiar with her hit songs - truth be told, I didn't know her name - she will be missed. Be at peace kind soul.

I have heard of her, but don't know much about her. I am more familiar with Kay Starr. What other hits did Patti have?

I actually though Patti Austin for a split second before I reread the title.

This is a boring song and yet the quality of her voice is so beautiful you can't help but listen to it.

Her vocal control is pretty amazing.

The sad thing is there's not many of those legends of the golden age of the entertainment industry left (30's- early50's, pre-rock)

I can think of

Doris Day

Tony Bennett

Mickey Rooney

Shirley Temple

Jerry Lewis

Lauren Bacall

Kirk Douglas

Dick Van Dyke
