To this day, I still never could understand why Motown never let the boys make their own music?

They were playing for themselves years before they even got to Motown. At the time they wanted freedom, only Smoke, Marvin and Stevie had that, understandable.

None of the other artist did like Tempts, Diana Ross, Supremes, ect. But, coming into Motown, they never did, so that was a different story.

They could have started them out slow, like CBS Records did. Give them a few cuts on the albums.

Hell, Ronnie Rancifer has a few credited tracks under his belt during the J5 days, "I Am Love" being the most known title.

I've long wondered the same thing, especially given that I think Jermaine was allowed to start writing and producing for himself as early as '77. The boys were becoming adults, so the transition was surely inevitable... from what I've read, a relatively small concession could have been enough to keep hold of them.

In my mind, Jermiane was rocking that look before MJ. I remember as a kid seeing him in it first. I refer to those jackets as Jermaine Jackson jackets when I see them in stores like Forever21. Of course I own a few of them too. lol

I wouldn't doubt Mr. Gordy remembered the cost to Motown's bottom line when they had t to renegotiate Marvin Gaye's contract after the mega hit, "What's Going On" album. Motown not only had to pay Mr. Gaye more money but he gained more creative control over his music.

Apparently after the successes of OTW and THRILLER, Berry Gordy never stopped kicking himself for letting the JACKSONS leave Motown. Infact some of mj biggest motown hits in the uk came after the release of OTW, such as One DAY in Your Life.

Marvin's deal was different. He was already writing and producing before that new contract after 1971.

It seems a few years after tghe J5 left, everyone on the label was writing. Rick James, Lionel Richie, of course Jermaine. Hell, even Vanity when she came over, lol.

Gaye still received more creative control and money; this is documented in PBS, The Masters.

Just my observation,...

Sometimes people believe to keep total control, its best to keep people under their thumb. Could Gordy have been so arrogant or clueless he couldn't see the Jackson's talent / potential for being songwriters, produces, composers? As you know the Jacksons left Motown because they were worried they'd be nothing more than a glorified cover band. I wonder if Gordy's thinking was, the band was already a cash cow why risk a proven formula? Gordy wouldn't be the first CEO to sacrifice the big picture for immediacy.

To your point.

I think Gordy learned a painful lesson after everyone jumped ship. Once again the business-model for Motown had to change. In the coming years it was more profitable for them to have artist who could compose and produce; you had artist for which you didn't have to hold their hand and they could kinda jump in feet first. Hell, his contracts were still the same, he owned most of their shit and made all the money still. In many instances Gordy had some great businesses instincts but he allowed ego, greed, and power hang ups to get the better of him a lot of times. But this is so true of a lot of CEO's.
