Are there particular songs/styles that you are drawn to? He has a few different and distinct styles that he has tried and not many people love everything that he did. For example I quite like his early instrumental albums like Hot Rats and The Grand Wazoo but I'm not really a fan of his "comedy" music of the late seventies/early eighties.

Tell us what you have heard that you liked and, if applicable, what you haven't liked. That should make it much easier to give you a recommendation.

You probably can't go wrong with his first album (Freak Out).

I asked my husband, who is the resident Frank Zappa fan in our household and he said...

Free your mind and the rest will follow.

Being the resident George Clinton fan that I am...that was a good damn answer! headbang

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

If you're really interested in his career...

...start at the beginning.

If you're just interested in some of the more popular stuff...

...Overnite Sensation, Sheik Yerbouti, Apostrophe

One of my favorite sequences...

...Village of the Sun/Echidna's Arf (Of You) & Don't You Ever Wash That Thing. (The sequence is played non-stop)

Also try to find Live at Fillmore East. The live show is a great intro.

I don't have a huge number of his albums, but Apostrophe and Overnight Sensation are packaged in a single disc (or were) and I have found them to be the most accessible of my Zappa discs. Over the last 20 years, they've gotten the most attention.

I also recently saw Dweezil Zappa say that those two albums are the best introduction to his music.
