One of her best multi-format singles. I'm not sure why this didn't take off like it should have.

I agree, this should have been a Top hit. It's a great song. One recurring problem that Donna faced in the 80s was....the first single from her albums would become hits, but the follow-up singles didn't do very well. From this album (which was produced by Quincy Jones),the first single "Love Is In Control (Finger On The Trigger)" was a huge hit on the pop and R&B charts. It reached the Top 10 on both charts. But the two follow-up singles "State Of Indpendence" and "The Woman In Me" only became minor hits.It makes no sense.

It has been suggested that Geffen Records simply didn't know how to market/promote Donna in the post-disco era.I really think that, after leaving Casablanca Records, she probably should have signed with an established label that had more experience with dance music artists.David Geffen was more into rock artists.

Yep. The only time she managed two Top Ten singles from the same album in the 80's was "She Works Hard For the Money" and "Unconditional Love" on the R&B chart. Really hard to believe. Same thing was happening with Chaka in the 80's. The intital singles were always huge. The follow-ups were not. I think in both cases, they were just too musically diverse and it put them both at a disadvantage where marketing and promo was concerned.

This is where it gets interesting lol The She Works Hard For The Money album wasn't released on Geffen. That album was on Polygram, which now owned Casablanca Records. When Donna left Casablanca in 1980,she agreed to record one more album for them,to fulfill her contract. She finally delivered that album (She Works Hard For The Money) to them in 1983 and it was a big album for her. However,it compilcated her relationship with Geffen Records. They were pissed that she could have a hit album with another company, but not with them lol but it goes back to what I said earlier: Geffen didn't know what to do with Donna. They didn't know how to market and sell her music. This fact was proven again when she delivered her next album to Geffen, the ambitious Cats Without Claws. It was her first official "flop" album.....didn't even reach gold status.

This sounds like the huge ballad hit that never was... it's odd how Donna's slower numbers never seemed to get very far on the charts. Judging by the videos for this album's singles, Geffen spunked all the money on Quincy. smile

Yeah, that was very unfortunate."Winter Melody" was her first ballad single and it didn't go anywhere.A year later,"Can't We Just Sit Down (And Talk It Over)" was released as a single, but radio DJs played the B-side instead ("I Feel Love").I've always felt that "On My Honor" (from Bad Girls) would have made an excellent single but let's face it...radio would have ignored that, too.People only accepted uptempo singles from her.

lol the videos from this album are embarrasingly cheap and ridiculous.I know she was pregnant when the first two videos were filmed ("Love Is In Control" and "State Of Independence") but that's no excuse. With a bigger budget and perhaps better directors, she could have done some great videos.
