HAPPYPERSON

Carly Rae Jepsen might be a 1 hit wonder

To those who are wondering whether Carly Rae Jepsen can rescue her career from the ash bin of One Hit Wonder-dom: If you have to ask, it’s already too late.

Maybe if “Call Me Maybe” had done a little less well, if it hadn’t been responsible for such a protracted national freak-out this past summer, she wouldn’t be in this fix. But at some point, probably around the time the dancing pup Corgi Rae Jepsen went viral, “Call Me Maybe” became not just something Jepsen had to live up to, but something she had to live down.

“Kiss” Jepsen’s full-length album: The singer, who is 26 going on 14, her album is just as synthetic but zippier. It’s a pleasantly lacquered set of pleasantly unremarkable dance-pop songs that is only the thing it needs to be — not terrible — and not much more.

“Kiss” may not be distinctive or even very good, but it’s likable, fast on its feet and blissfully uncluttered. A grouping of synth-heavy pop songs shorn of all but the most necessary beats and loops, “Kiss” has also been stripped of most obvious trend signifiers in favor of clean, often joyous pop songs, dutifully lined up and politely swatted down. Many of them (“Tiny Little Bows,” “Hurt So Good”) sound like “Call Me Maybe,” only less so.

There are some outliers: “Beautiful,” a three-way semi-acoustic duet with Jepsen’s patron Justin Bieber and his AutoTune, is an unapologetic, marginally less condescending riff on One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful” (“What makes you so beautiful / Is you don’t know how beautiful you are”). “Your Heart Is a Muscle” is a lovely ballad and undersold, evidence that Jepsen can deliver a slow song without over-singing and without sounding irritated (Katy Perry) or bored (Rihanna) with its subject.

A veteran of “Canadian Idol” (she came in third — it was a tough season), Jepsen can probably sing better than she needs to. But a Murderer’s Row of high-priced producers (Max Martin & Dallas Austin) can’t manage to fashion a persona for her. Lovely and mild, Jepsen is the rare aspiring diva without the slightest whiff — however manufactured — of danger, sex or madness.

This will probably prove far more hazardous to her long-term job prospects than the lack of a follow-up single. (“Kiss” her album has many contenders, all vanilla.) Unless she plans to shoot firecrackers out of her bra, date Chris Brown or revive some long-ago meth habit, Jepsen will always be the polite, forgettable Canadian girl who sang that song in the summer of 2012. The one you never want to hear again.

She's got Justin Beiber behind her, so you can be sure you'll hear some more of her stuff.

"call me maybe" was hard to dislike.

but she really doesn't have anything unique or interesting to say as an artist. So bye Carly. Take 50 others with you when you leave.

Many years ago (the year 1983 to be exactly), Madonna was suppose to be a one-hit wonder. What happen?

And just back in the 2000's, Akon was suppose to be a one-hit wonder. And the only reason he's finally stop making music is because he discovered Lady Gaga and sign her to his label, hence giving his more time better spent being a label record exec.

All I saying is let not dismiss Carly Rae Jepsen until will know by the summer of 2013 that she is really out of the music industry. Otherwise, we're have many more Carly threads in the org to come.

Depends on how you define a hit!

Yes, Good Times is in the Top 10 hovering arond spot #9 but will not be a #1 hit

So, in the end she will in fact be a 1 hit wonder...

It's almost hard to be a true one hit wonder now. If in doubt, collaborate with another act and have them "feature" with you and there's a built in second hit already.

Market yourself well and make sure your song sounds like the same fucking production as about 10 other songs in the chart so that the vocoder makes your voice sound so indistinctive that casual listeners won't even be able to tell the difference between the singers. Hey presto, more hits.

Am I really that cynical? I just don't listen to chart stations so the only time I get to hear this stuff is as shit like Capital FM is playing in the hair salon as it was today. I was Shazam-ing all the songs I didn't know and they really did sound the same. Carly Rae Jepsen was on twice in 2 hours.

Any song that within the Top 40 portion of Billboard's Hot 100 USA singles has always counted as a "major hit".

Don't believe it? Research Jimi Hendrix, the most influencial one-hit wonder of all-times! His only one major hit was a cover of Bob Dylan 's All Along The Watchtower. wink

It's weird... i think the top 40 meant a lot more in the 70's & 80's.

When i hear radio.. it's always what is in the top 20, but it's mainly top 10 50% of the time i would say. So it seem's those in lower positions are not really played out much...

And anything below top 40... doesn't seem to get any play. When radio was owned by more then viacom lol it seem's that whether your song number 40 or number 2 it got lots of play.

lol I thought the song was a cute little tune the first time I heard it; but, I was done with it after hearing it the second time. Now, I just want to put a pencil through my ear drum when I hear it. It's catchy as hell...yep, that's about it. If it comes on and I can't change the station in time, I sing my own lyrics for the chorus because that's really the only noticeable part about the whole song. 'Yeah, I just met you; but, I'm not crazy. So lose my number; and, don't call me 'baby'.'

The girl is adorable and looks much younger than 26. I think she kinda looks like Taylor Swift only with brown hair and those nauseating bangs that I just want to trim everytime I see her...seriously they are too long and need to be either cut or removed all together. Like the article says, unless she manages to get a more edgy persona she will be a 1 hit wonder in this era of music. Rihanna was cute and innocent on her first album to and now look at her just to name one of the many female artists who realized that being innocent doesn't mean your label will keep you signed. Personally, I don't throw out the '1 hit wonder' title because you never know what the future holds.

Thing is, I think TOP 40 radio sucks and never listen to it, but this song was still unavoidable.

That song is awful. I don't even think I've heard it in its entirety. I've just heard bits and pieces on TV.

I'm not one for pop radio. lol

Call Me Maybe was cute but a few days back I caught her on the Ellen show and she did a real good song called This Kiss. It's very Swedish Pop (which is my favorite) so I might as well check her album out.

I wanted to keep this thread focus on her national & international hits. But you're right, the regional hits from Carly's pre-Call Me Maybe days can not be overlooked.
