Steely Dan frontman Donald Fagen will release his fourth solo album, Sunken Condos, on October 16. The nine-song collection features eight new original compositions by the singer/pianist, as well as a rendition of the Isaac Hayes tune "Out of the Ghetto."

Fagen tapped the talents of number of Steely Dan backing musicians for the project, including guitarist Jon Herington, bassist Freddie Washington and the group's horn section. Fagen co-produced the album with Michael Leonhart, who has played trumpet with the Dan since the 1990s.

Fagen's three previous solo efforts, 1982's The Nightfly, 1993's Kamakiriad and 2006's Morph the Cat, made up what the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer has dubbed The Nightfly Trilogy, while the official announcement about Sunken Condos describes it as "a new chapter in [Fagen's] creative evolution."

I chuckled when I saw the single cover. Contrary to the downcast song title and in keeping with the aquatic theme, the guy is shark-like and cheerful.

The expectations based on the great tracks of The Trilogy had to wear off.

Also, having read that Michael Leonhart was the drummer (normally the trumpet player in the SD horn section) was an initial head-scratcher having gotten used to the superlative drumming of Keith Carlock.

It was the chord changes/harmonies of the chorus that kicked in first.
Next, the irony and humor of the lyrics.

As usual, rather than taking the lazy tired and trite way out when writing a love, or in this case a breakup song, he adds another layer to the story.

“In ‘I’m Not the Same Without You,’ the narrator not only survives but rapidly evolves into something a bit more than human – at least in his own mind.”

Just listened to it 10 times in a row and all the syllables work (and the words make sense) ...

He usually includes lyrics (if not with the album on his site) so we'll know for sure in a few weeks.

Saw steely dan in san diego by the water at an outdoor venue it was so cool i was right at the stage with my elbows on the stage the whole night ..

It seems to have leaked.

Yeah, it has been out for a few days now, but only available at one website though (as FLAC files). I bought them immediatey, they sound great! The album is pretty good too, I like almost all songs.

Since yesterday you can also listen to a stream of the full album somewhere on MSN.com, for those who are interested.
