Chicago soul great Curtis Mayfield's sound which he developed in the late 50s' can be considered a major force in the beginnings of Reggae music. His guitar work, the Impressions vocal harmonies, the drumming was all a major factor in the bubbling Reggae sound that was forming in the island. Young Bob Marley was a huge fan.

It's been indicated that some of the Impressions' music inspired ska/rocksteady/reggae in Jamaica as well as the vocal styling of the group and its Chicago brethren. Bob obviously took a lot out of Curtis' playbook.

I can definitely hear the elements of ska and reggae in this song, sounds legit to me.

I agree. It's been well documented that Bob was quite influenced by Curtis and much of his style. Songs like "I'm The One Who Needs You" and even some of Curtis' solo stuff such as "Keep On Keepin' On" has that ska/rocksteady sound that predated some of the different styles of reggae music.
