Some Reasons Why New Music Isn't Selling.

The Village Voise has this interesting article on why older music is outpacing newer music (and it has little to do with quality):

1. Pirating has become incredibly easy

2. With people dying left and right their sales increase a lot

3. Digital music is now the norm, same applies with books

I hate to beat a dead horse but radio has an opportunity to be SO much better now.

With listenership dwindling (it has to be) they should go for broke, hire real DJ's again and just spin all the cool new music that's out. Hell the "New Music" thread on here is a good example of what radio COULD be playing, and I think there's a healthy audience for it.

Sure it won't pull in the Demi Lovato or that Jepsom(sp) chicks crowd, but they could surely make money playing interesting, cool stuff.

Radio is as played out as Donald Trump's weak toupée... lol It doesn't have a chance. People have a plethora of choices now and radio has become way phased out.

Now if we wanna talk about satellite radio or even internet radio, specifically, there's a small possibility. But it's still phased out.

eek I respectfully disagree.. a CHUCK of the real reason why radio is dead is because the PUBLIC has no control over what gets played. The radio was a medium where the listeners had most of the control over how often something got played and now with all this shit with Clearchannel/ Viacom etc.. these record labels have most of the control and the DJs HAVE to stick to a specific play list if they want to get broadcast and hardly ever rear away from it.

What gets played on the radio is controlled now and since people are now realizing this its forcing people to look at other options for music since the options are so limited on the radio. You have stations such as the Adult comtemporary stations and some oldies station that try to stick to that old skool way of doing radio but they still cant play everything they want. It cant ALL just be adult R&b. Even on the adult contemporary R&b station I listen to sometimes mostly when driving to and from work during summers (Because I dont listen to the radio no other time) razz they have once played Rihanna and Beyonce quite a few times... there is no getting around the system. They have to play certain things and even when its a specific station they have to play certain artists.. I dont know how many times Ive heard that KEM song on that adult station eek eek eek They play the damn thing 50 times a day!!! Literally ... What about Maxwell, Jill Scott, Musiq, Anothony?? They play these artists to but they dont get that much love like they should and they act like NO other artist exists. Radio plays the SAME shit... THATS THE PROBLEM but 70 percent of its not the DJ's fought.. Viacom must think people are REALLY DUMB nuts but then again people really are nuts

To go along with Mjs.....

Since viacom owns so many of the channels... it is somewhat true. They stick to playing the same artists on constant rotation. My neighboors & co-workers listen to the radio and every hour Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, Pitbul, Drake, Call Me Maybe eek , Those artists and song are played almost every hour... and it's like come on now give another artist a chance lol

Honestly i feel like only top 10 hits nowaday's get play neutral Used to be anything top 40 was getting spins.. but seem's like only top 10 hits are getting the spotlight over & over & over

Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

I think that just makes CK's point. YEAH...radio has been in the shitter for WHO knows how long now with the whole corporate payola model But I agree with CK....WHAT IF??? What if a major market player stepped up & did go back (even in just a couple time slots) to the 70's-80's AOR model when the jocks & PD's had the lattitude to spin the best material in pursuit of a real audience? I think the climate is ripe for some hippage that way. God knows there's no shoratge of material..and the audience is there (all battered into a musical coma after years of the same-ole-same-ole). Ripe for a revolution, I think. Just need a big radio entity with some balls & some vision. Satelite was a viable first salvo.....

I think it's from people downloading new music for free and also sending it to their friends for them to download also (which I'm glad to see and encourage people to do so 100%).

Whatever the reasons though, it looks like we've finally made a little progress and this trend needs to keep continuing until the new so-called artists go broke and find a line of work that's more suitable for them because it's certainly not music.

But then again, the radio industry has "shot itself in the foot" unknowingly. Remember these? (this is for all my old school peoples, ya'll will know what I'm talking about...)

Anyways, it's just history repeating itself, because these corporate dudes (AHEM, Viacom) really think that the public is stupid.

It would take more than just ONE major DJ to do that. Were talking about America as a whole and the radio has been dead for over a decade now. It has gotten so bad that people have became adapted to it and to lazy to speak out about it. There are ALOT of people that feel the way we do but I dont think their willing to make changes. Its going to take alot of DJs and Radio personalities especially in major cities to change back to the old school way of doing radio. It doesnt seem like a MAJOR issues for the radio stations but I bet if they confronted the issue they would be surprised with alot of responces they would receive for bringing up the issue. But putting all that to the side at this point, in order for REAL changes to be made they would have to boycott and just stop playing music all together but thats how most of them make a living so their not going to do that. People care to much about their asses being on the line and are not gonna step up. Im sure alot of the Radio Personalities feel the same way but its going to take MORE than one station to make changes. Im noticing more and more now that when I switch back and forth on the radio that it is not just the mainstream stations that stick to this model, even the gospels, adult r&B, classic etc stations do the same thing. Its not right or fair to other artists... it most certainly isnt real radio which is why I dont listen to it only a few exceptions

Its not only pirated downloads. You can buy hit singles cheaply and easily most ppl r not interested in albums anymore they just like to buy the hit songs and forget about the rest.

The music industry back in the 90s stopped selling singles at the time so that ppl would have to go out and buy the whole album and the chart was only using airplay numbers. b4 that u had to release a single to be considered for the H100.Princes I hate you didnt chart on the H100 cause it wasnt released as a single but did well with the airplay

It would be good to try a tactic that has worked in the past and see if it works this time. To get rid of shit hop, they should try the old "Disco Sucks" routine and give it a shot. DJs need to create a whole "Shit Hop Sucks" hype and a major well known coast to coast DJ, someone like Tom Joyner, should have a big blowing up of shit hop CDs at a major event. To kill something, you have to make it seem "uncool". Hell, it worked for disco which was actually music, so it sure wouldn't hurt to try it on shit hop which actually ain't shit.

The racial fallout from a "Kill Hip Hop" event would be disasterous!

But hip hop isn't even the worst of it. Have you heard pop radio lately? All these marginally talented girls singing stupid songs about boys? All those sound-alike pop/rock-lite boy bands. I like techno, but even I have no problem with having it stay in its lane.

Yes, it was released as a single. Complete with remixes. The song went to number 12 on the Hot 100 and number 3 on the R&B chart.

A key factor in that also was WB. They didn't really promote it and Prince was done with the project before TGE was released. He was just trying to get out of his contract at the time.

I AGREE

But they need to include alot more in that shit hop... they need to include Rihanna, Beyonce, Trey Songz, Katy Perry, Justin Bieber, Chris Brown, etc and popular artists who make shitty ass and they shouldnt be exempt because their popular but radios arent going to do that their not crazy unless they are willing to lose their jobs which Im sure their not.

Its funny some of the personalities talk about how bad music is today compared to the past but they play the dumb shit on their stations nuts and dont support the newer better artists. Im tired of these fake ass radio personalities always tryna front like they for a cause when they aint about shit..

I dig Tom Joyner but he is not about to loose his house, cars, money etc... He needs SUPPORT. All the Radio personalities need to get together across America and I wouldnt mine being on the campaign but Joyner might have to censor me razz

To be honest, DJ's have no control and program directors are afraid to lose their jobs. They do the minimum to keep a job.

Disco Sucks wasn't just about the music though. It was a disguised rant about other things, started by white male rock fans and DJs. You didn't see them starting a "light rock/adult contemporary sucks" campaign. That was really popular at the time too. At the Disco Demolition, a riot started and the baseball game was cancelled. In the 1960's, T-shirts and buttons with "Stamp Out The Beatles" were sold. People in the bible belt burned Beatles records/posters after John Lennon's Jesus comment. None of this hurt their popularity.

At any rate, disco didn't really die, they just renamed it dance music. razz lol

If that was the case, radio wouldn't exist. Advertisers wouldn't buy ad space if their were no listeners. Companies would not manufacture car radios and stereo recievers/tuners. College radio are run from donations and pledges, and so people are doing that since they are on the air.

As far as advertising goes, advertisers put all of their trust and time into internet and television really. neutral

There wouldn't be a racial fallout if the movement was started by a major black DJ encouraging the movement in the black community. There are tons of black people that absolutely despise shit hop so it's not a racial thing at all and the shit hoppers couldn't holler racism in this situation. Hell, it's because of white people buying it that it became as huge as it is and refuses to die.

I dig Tom Joyner but he is not about to loose his house, cars, money etc... He needs SUPPORT. All the Radio personalities need to get together across America and I wouldnt mine being on the campaign but Joyner might have to censor me razz

I just used him as an example. There needs to be a well known coast to coast black DJ as big as he is to make it work. As for Tom himself, he would have been the perfect person in the 1990s when he was having old school concerts every Friday morning and playing old music on his show. But since the 2000s began, he began selling out and playing the bullshit new music also and also started using their silly little slang phrases in his speech.

At any rate, disco didn't really die, they just renamed it dance music. razz lol

Oh, of course the "Disco Sucks" music was more than just the music. It was a racist and homophobic movement. Disco was black music with gay roots, two things that assholes hate. Yes, I know that disco survived. Hell, it immediately went underground as Hi NRG and later as house music. But that movement did do it's damage. It took it out of the mainstream. Hell, the reason I got into funk in the first place is because after that movement, I couldn't find anything that sounded worth a damn on white radio. I went searching the stations and found the black stations with funk which sounded very similar to disco at the time.

No, it's impossible to completely kill shit hop but at least get it out of the mainstream and get something good in the mainstream. Hell, at this point, I don't even care if something that I don't like such as polka takes over the mainstream just as long as shit hop gets out of it because for shit hop to dominate as long as it has despite how boring, thuggish, ignorant, and homophobic as it is, I want to see that fucking genre suffer big time. evillol

Azz

It's simply because it's so easy to download pirated music.

You can download exact replicas of iTunes albums off pirate websites. To most; there aren't any cons.

Identity

Unlimited digital piracy has all but decimated the music industry.

The proverbial horse is out of the barn and there are no strategies viable for combating the problem.

Some people buy unoffical CDs. At places where I've worked, there was always someone selling self burned CDs of popular songs, old & new, and bootleg DVDs of new movies that are still in the theater. They would have a list of songs that the buyer could choose from for the CD, and would sell them for about $5.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton
