Rock of Ages....yay or nay??

Just wondered what people thought? My own take is summed up here:-

http://filmsfilmsfilms.co...12-06-21-7

Loved the stage show....but the film, not so much.

I saw it and thought it was cute, corny and cheesy. I wasnt expecting some hard-hitting, gritty 80s rock music drama--I knew it was gonna be more silly than serious before I saw it, so I wasnt disappointed. Its kind of like a 2 hour Glee episode except the characters are grown adults instead of teenagers, and instead of it taking place in high school it takes place mostly in a bar. And all the songs are 80s rock hits. If you dont take it seriously you will be fine. Its no more than light entertaining fluff, mindless, nostalgic fun. I wont be buying it on DVD when its released, and speaking of DVDs if you're still unsure of whether or not to go see it, it might be better to just wait to rent it from Netflix or Redbox when it comes out on DVD.

I have to give props to Tom Cruise tho for doing his own singing and performing. I gotta say he really had the 80s rock god moves and poses down to a tee! Kind of reminded me of a young Iggy Pop. Overall I enjoyed it. On a scale of 1-10 I give it a 6. cool

I think it was the "2 hour Glee episode" thing that didn't sit right with me. Not that I'm anti Glee, but its shiny, nicey-nicey feel really didn't suit late 80s LA, when we know groups like Motley Crue were out there doing their thing...if it was a bit rougher round the edges, that would have been great.

The film could have benefitted from songs with a harder edge. Mötley Crüe, for example, was approached but decided not to license songs for Rock of Ages.

Combining someone who jumped on Oprah's couch, someone who stole a big portion of his ex-wife's money, and someone who sung about chicken on a Burger King commercial doesnt sound like a good movie. PASS

What I'm saying is, is that there was a story going around that Russel wanted to take something $20 million from Katy's fortune. Apparently that was big lie and the fact that it was a lie never spread around

I sooooo want to like Cruise. He's usually the best thing in alot of the films he appears in these days, Tropic Thunders, Rock of Ages, etc.....but its just the damn scientology stuff. I don't begrudge someone their religious beliefs (providing they aren't causing harm to other people), but damn, that stuff is some mental sheeeiiiate...!!

Some would say Witnesses believe in a false god, which places their belief system in the cult category.

Who gives a shit about his religion/beliefs/cult or whatever you wanna label it? Scientology makes just as much sense as Noah building the ark 2 me which btw more than 60% of the nation actually believes it happened...and u don't find that fucked up because...?? He's a decent actor and his movies always kick ass (well majority of them do) and that's all I care.

However...I saw this movie last night and it was just OK. It has tacky moments but overall it was enjoyable though I wasn't particularly moved or excited over it. I think action movies always bring the best out of him.

Fair point, well made.

Re. Cruise, I think his best work in the last decade has been in playing dubious characters, I guess you could say against type, in Collateral, Magnolia, Tropic Thunder, etc....his work here has been so much better than the hero type characters he's played.

Good points ya'll made. I agree that Cruise did his best characters in those movies, I dont think I'll be watching this Rock of Ages movie, seems pretty lame. Worse Cruise movie I've watched is a movie from the 80s, when he's some type of fairytale character, such a bad movie.

Word biggrin

Come on people, I'm pretty sure there are at least some folks around here that believe in some sort of invisible man in the sky..

Ah, fuck it, George Carlin said it best, as usual:

I dig Tom as an actor, and that's all I care about.
