Marcus Miller - Renaissance

This is bass-guitar star Marcus Miller's UK-tour repertoire of last month, plus a few bonuses, including the finely spun vocals of young New Yorker Gretchen Parlato and the rasping ones of Dr John on two tracks. For jazz-funk fans, it's paradise – Miller's arrangements have the clamouring horn parts, snappy basslines, raw guitar fills and whipcrack backbeats of this style meshing like a racing engine, and, of course, there are plenty of jawdropping bass solos. Creative obliqueness (of the kind Miller brought to Miles Davis's Tutu and Amandla albums in the 1980s) isn't always apparent. The assertive foregrounding of the bass guitar doesn't exactly enhance the potentially mysterious Brazilian feature Setembro, with its vocals by Parlato and Ruben Blades, and horn-punching groovers such as Cee Tee Eye veer to the formulaic. But the exhilaratingly funky Detroit, the lyrical (and Tutu/Amandla-related) Redemption, or the Headhunters-like Slippin' into Darkness confirm Miller's mastery of his particular world. Solos from Lincoln Centre trumpeter Sean Jones and excellent regular saxophonist Alex Han spark fireworks, sly quotes from Dizzy Gillespie and Bob Marley classics add spice, and there's a poetic solo-bass finale on I'll Be There.

With each new installment M ², an event! We are still waiting much of the gifted, workaholic, a variety of experiences. After about 35 years, as a Sideman, Producer, Composer solo or legendary artists ... or not ... pretty Note: MILES DAVIS, Al Jarreau, Herbie Hancock, Luther Vandross, George Benson, Joe Sample, EU (GOGO ), Chyco Simeon, Claude Challe, Whitney Houston (briefly), George Duke, Me'shell Ndegeocello, David Sanborn, Stanley Clarke, Victor Wooten, The Jamaica Boys, Roberta Flack and ......... the list goes on & on & on ...

This album marks a departure for the artist, what talented hyper SQ FT: "I feel that a page turns, our latest hero disappear and we enter a new era, both political and cultural. But music is not as revolutionary as the media. It's time for a renaissance."

And to mark the break, complete change of cast with a new band and special guests. New group, really? For a solo studio album Yes! But artists like Alex Han, Sean Jones, Federico Gonzales Pena, Luis Cato there were already a lot of lives together, and especially TUTU revisited! As for Bobby Sparks, this is an old faithful of the faithful, a former still very young.

The Band:

Marcus Miller (SQM): Bass & Bass Clarinet

Louis Cato: Drums

Kris Bowers: Keyboards

Alex Han: Sax

Maurice Brown: Trumpet

Sean Jones: Trumpet

Adam Agati, Adam Rogers: Guitar

Federico Gonzales Peña: Piano, Fender Rhodes

Bobby Sparks: Keyboards

Ramon Yslas: Percussion

On this album, 8 original tracks and five times.

tracklist:

1 - Detroit - It starts strong with his THE M ², accompanied by a fabulously Kris Bowers spot on. Horn section very present without being overwhelming. And Marcus who walks around as only geniuses can do. Any phrasing and say: "Wow, take that!". Solo incredible, even for a connoisseur of the great Marcus. This is his great strength! He knows, for example here with a popping sound renouveleré constantly LA Ft Touch and impress his biggest fans (yes, I have always been ... I think ... since Jean Pierre with Miles actually)! Alex Han is amazing as always! During the concert series Tutu, I was badly impressed!!

2 - Redemption - Piece a little cooler that makes great Alex Han and Sean Jones to the brass, with little more provided by Federico G. Peña. I could be wrong, but Alex Han remember here the fiery Kenny Garrett in its infancy. Marcus Miller's solo is ... mmmm ... it is ... you just need to listen, it's just beautiful ...

3 - February - Cool Down Latin tempo. While successful, Alex Han majestic, a BEAUTIFUL chorus, Marcus Miller "singing" as a person and his Lower Louis Cato shines in Djembes.

4 - Slippin 'into Darkness - Resumption of the greatest classic of WAR. FUNKY! Much more than a resume, this is a complete rewrite of this great title! This is just another opportunity to see the genius, the talent of Marcus Miller. Never in simplicity, always fun. Magnificent brass, percussion and mixed with an M ² in great shape! Note once again the beautiful piano playing Kris Bowers. I did not know him, I now follow! Sean Jones and gloss! This album is a gold mine in fact: an incredible number of nuggets in it! What is the title of this song already? This is a cover? Ah yes, the chorus! Because the rest is a real composition!

5 - Setembro (Brazilian Wedding Song) [Ivan Lins] - Superb cover of this great title, that Quincy Jones also took over there quite a few years now with the excellent group Take 6. Here, two huge sizes to magical titles: Gretchen Parlato and Ruben Blades, no less. And two thumbs up for his game Ramon Yslas percussion. This is a piece that wraps us, carries us away ... in a place where life is good ... Superb Marcus Miller, beautiful duet Clarinete Bass and Sax against the current, and what undisguised pleasure of listening to Ruben Blades. This album would have been a different color without this masterpiece. A MASTERPIECE!

6-Jekyll & Hyde - Back to Funk! With its very Dirty, Hyde side? Of course. I especially like Federic Gonzales Peña while withdrawal, shifted, but sublime. It sends the wholesale, heavy, shiny brass. The young ALex Han who plays as an old hand, very electric Adam Rogers on guitar, Bobby Sparks so groovy ... IN YO FACE! Not my fault if i like especially the trashy side, the side HYDE! That's my dose of FUNK! AGAIN!! Just imagine it LIVE, to shed a tear!

7 - Interlude - Nocturnal Mist [Luther "Mano" Hanes]: Marcus while sober, Federico Gonzales Peña accompanied.

8 - Revelation - If I had a piece to highlight what this amazing young talent Alex Han, it would be this one ...! Part incredible. That's when the beat speeds Sq Ft, takes the bull by the beast, and it hard GROOVE! Good Adam Agati and Louis Cato! This piece is like an implosion, as a revelation of all musicians ...wink

9 - Mr. Clean, in Weldon Irvine Jr - Jazz Funk Huge piece of the giant Irvine Junior Weldone of 1972, with good sound very fat, low overwhelming, a Sean Jones on trumpet Glistening, Alex Han still ... A good listen VERY VERY LOUD! And second part, Marcus is reborn with a solo SO FUNKY, Bobby Sparks Damned ... INCREDIBLE! This is HUGE! I suggest you listen to the coup d'Liberated Brother album, a must have.

10 - Goree (GB-Ray) - down down tempo, bass clarinet forward for this piece tribute to the infamous slave trade in Africa, the Island of Gorée (Dakar Bay) symbolizes. This is probably the best performance by Marcus Miller bass clarinet to date, in my opinion of course. Could someone tell Alex Han to stop being so good and so mature please? It is too strong this little young!

11 - EEC-TEE-EYE, featuring Paul Jackson Jr. on guitar, aka Mr I-played-with-all-the-world. Big bass for this mid-tempo song, supported by a strong horn section, a meat poulesque Maurice Brown, Kris Bowers great! Sumptuous arrangements used by the MASTER Marcus Miller. If you want to scream, then listen to his latest solo ... speechless ... And that's before breakfast!

12 - Tightrope, Janelle Monae, featuring Dr. John - Again, a very surprising recovery away from the original version, which was already very punchy (and a clip delicious!). He had to think, take this piece of 2010 and add Dr. John with his very particular voice. Bravo, once again. I'm not a fan of this kind of rhythm, but there ... everything is so VERY high level, that I can not help but dance behind my keyboard of ebony and ivory .. oh no, not there ... my computer keyboard to type this modest article, where I attack one of my favorite artists (Miles, George Duke and Al Jarreau). To return to this piece, I'll ADORE having David Sanborn play is so close to his. But it would not be a Renaissance;-) So, once again: Alex Han ... STOP IT! You're too good! And definitely, I will follow this Kris Bowers.

13 - I'll be there initially interpreted by a small ... young Michael Jackson. Beautiful, brilliant, moving makes me once again regretted the death of this giant super talented artist, but also makes me not regret a deep cooperation between Ft and MJ. It would have been a turning point in music I think.

I'm gonna hafta let this new stuff simmer a bit here (bout a week to kinda "absorb" it)...but..

My initial reaction, as a long-time fan is "wow"...kind of a new "high-water" mark for him, in an understated while typically brilliant fashion.

And through it all....there he remains Mr. PERFECT tone....lol. Admired for it as much as he's envied by fellow players, the man is just uncoincious when it comes to tone. Amazing.

Saw a clip this week of a bass "apocalypse" last year in L.A. (him, Larry & Verdine..just BANGING on it all in unison)....but had to laugh....even in the midst of the tripple bass blast, you could STILL hear M's tone clearly.

Legend for a reason.

Here's the crazy part.
I've been at a couple of his gigs where I was sitting almost directly in front of his bass rig.
He gets amazingly close to that same awesome sound live.

That was from one of the BASS Player Live events here.

If you want to hear 3 bass players recorded and mixed to perfection, SMV is the ticket.
