The Dazz band covered a lot of ground with their music.
Ranging styles and techniques.
They aren't my favorite but I might have to roll with them in this case. You're so glam, every time I see you I wanna slam!

The two that compete most heavily for my affection (now and back in the day) are Cameo and Slave. Funk Is It's Own Reward

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

The Isley Brother were pretty funky as well. The Brothers Johnson also.

"Best" would certainly be hard to choose. My favorite is definitely the Gap Band, though. "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

Zapp & Roger Slave (in fact the Dayton, Ohio Sound) P-Funk J.B Sly & The Family Stone GCS (not 2000) Cameo (The Full Band not the 3-piece)
Tried many flavours - but sooner or later, always go back to the Purple Kool-aid!

Ya know, in thinking about the OP's question....Dre correctly alludes to one glaring fact:
So much stank-ass funk has come from / through / or associated with O-H-I-O that it boggles the mind.

Damn I'm loving this thread. I know I always piss and moan about you guys moaning about today's music, but one thing is for sure, artists don't FUNK it up anymore. At least not in the mainstream. And someone told me about some foreign funk bands that I should check out, but I forgot who they were. If you're that person or know who they're referring to PLEASE PM me. I'm getting rather tired of Chris Brown and Adele. ![]() Thanks!

Family Stone were one of the 1st major cross over acts. Meaning, because they merged genres and changed the whole music game, they aren't an all around funk band as that's too limiting for them. Sly may of eventually single handedly developed funk to what everybody that followed copied in the early 70's, but he mostly did it solo and, again, still crossed over and merged genres.
So, that said, i'd nominate Parliament/Funkadelics and agree with choice 1.
GAP band is also worth considering. This Post is produced, arranged, composed and performed by WetDream

That's why I only put them at 3.
