Steely Dan - The Lost Gaucho Album

[img:$uid]http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b59/jbodine/Covers%20II/SDgauchoFr.jpg[/img:$uid]

The Gaucho sessions produced enough material for an alternate record that has been floating around for a bit.
Based on what went on with them during this time period, it's amazing the record got made at all.
Overall its an interesting insight into their writing process especially when you hear early versions of songs like Third World Man with a different title and lyrics.

One of the unfinished tracks that i'd wish they'd revisit is...

...Kulee Baba

My nom d'voyage is McSween
I carry the proper papers
I seek the primal rhythms of the bush
I preserve great moments as they come
And sure this must be one

Brightly painted dancers on the screen
Are no more than a prelude to the ritual unfolding
No white man's eyes have ever seen
The frightening finale, the rite that you're beholding

Chorus
Kulee Baba
Coming your way, every Sunday
Live from Nowhere
Satellite relay, hello Broadway

My suit is a bright Irish green
The color and cut are striking
I'm something of a standout in the crowd
Don't chew on that power cable son
I guess I owe you one

Word with my chief engineer
We'll mix with the mob for all the folks at home
I'm tasting the local beer
And half the crew is dancing in the foam

Chorus

(missing lyrics)

Sweet holy Jesus, what a night
St. Augustine was right

The cameraman began the Kulee Baba
The telecast was over, our featured friends were gone
I hear there's a bash in Camaroon
So long for now, we must be moving on...

Chorus
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

The principal in this song reminds me of the Carl Denham character...

...in the 1933 film King Kong. (Reprised by Jack Black in the more recent version of the film)

What is the alternative setlist for the "lost" Gaucho album?

I have a Kulee Baba version that just features Donald Fagen, alone on piano and vocals--so it;'s nice to compare and contrast the two....

biggrin Aha!!! Ndeed, Obi-Wan.....

Btw, have any other Kindle/iPad users checked out the e-book, "Do It Again: The Steely Dan Years", by Dave Di Martino? I don't know if you could call it a proper book really--it's basically all the information he gathered in preparation for a book on Steely Dan back in '85--and the publishing company decided not to release it for one reason or another.

So he just released all the stuff as an e-book..with no updates, no rewrites or anything, just all the interviews with band members and other info he came up with, up to that point in time(he doesn't really get to talk to Fagen, although he does correspond and play phone tag back and forth with Walter Becker, to get his OK on the material.....I wish he would have spent more time talking to the studio and Jazz cats like Larry Carlton, Steve Khan, Wayne Shorter, Steve Gadd etc. (although I guess we have the "Classic Albums" program, at least for Aja)...

Overall, I thought it was fascinating, even though it's a little jumbled and erratic...for die-hard SD fans, it's a nice companion piece to Brian Sweet's book, "Reelin' In The Years" ....

I got to see Donald Fagen, Michael McDonald, and Boz Skaggs play together as "The Dukes of September" at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in 2010, and they sounded wonderful. Much better than this tinny sounding video posted below. I was disappointed that they all didn't have a recording together to buy.

I heard they reprised "The Dukes" last year, although I didn't attend. smile

Not yet. I'll have an iPad3 in about a week or so.

If it's available in that format i'll definitely snag it.

I see that it's up for grabs in some of the usual places. whistling

A friend of mine here in LA may be the one who first unleashed that on the world. It had come from a friend of his who used to work in studios & ended up with a reel of the multitracks. If I recall correctly, he had acquired it when buying a reel of used 2-inch tape.

(One thing we learned when buying used tape reels for the studio- always listen to them before demagnetizing them! I know other engineers who ended up with multitracks for The Doors and Bloodsugarsexmagic.)

He gave a couple of us copies, and one of my friends went to talk about it on an SD message board, and was stunned to find out none of the collectors had heard it before.

SD broke out one of those outtake tunes on their tour last year, a really big surprise for those of us who noticed it. I'm pretty sure it was "The Bear."

...The Bear & The 2nd Arrangement

On a similar subject, i've had the individual tracks from Shaft for a few years.

Now that guitarist Charles Pitts has passed, I thought about that classic wah track.
