Can Axl Rose be called a great singer?

Or is it a case of his voice fitting GNR perfectly?

Ah, the latter... and he's a great frontman (even though a bit crazy), but I wouldn't really say he's a great singer. With the voice of his he actually has no business being a singer... but it works. wink

Technically, Axel, obviously, not a great singer (not sure if it is possible to call Axel at least a good singer, to be honest), but I like his voice. cool

These days he mostly sounds like a pig squealing and he's definitely not what he used to be.. Which could be due to age and not keeping his vocals in shape.. I mean he didnt perform for a decade or so at one point

But back in the day sure I would say Axl was a great singer

He had a massive range.. some of those notes he's hitting in his upper register most male singers would really struggle with

he was also an awesome PERFORMER who sang LIVE and finally has an instantly recognizable voice.. The minute u hear it u know who it is

To me i say yes all these things add up to being a great singer
I think some ppl just have a problem with his shrieking, raspy tone but it is suited to the genre of music and is a big part of what makes GNR's sound what it is..

If every singer had a smooth baby toned voice it would be BORING!

I always thought he presented some nice vocal chops on this one:

Truthfully? Yes, I think he can be.

He USES his voice in an unusual way that some people might find unpleasant, but I think he CAN sing.

Similar to Prince.

I don't like his voice (his phrasing is annoying) but he was a pretty good

frontman.

Seriously though he does have a great voice for the genre he's in. Definitely one of the greatest vocalists of rock music.

I would call him a very good but not great singer. He gets props for his range. The man can scream till ya ears bleed and still take it down to a falsetto.

I have seen him six times, the first time was when GNR opened for Aerosmith in 1988. I also saw GNR in 1991, 1992, and three times in 2006.

the trouble is he can't last a whole concert singing the way he does. I saw GNR in 91 at wembley and his voiced was fucked by the end but when i saw him in 2006 it was a lot stronger, but it may be all the 20 mins instrumental breaks he gets to rest his voice! but yes he is a great singer and Appetite is probably the most important and best rock record in the last 25 years.

cool

I'd say he does things with his voice that not many people can do.

I don't really like his high voice, but I like his low voice. I tend to like his music despite his voice not because of his voice.

But I supose he could be called a great rock singer for his unique style.

And his voice has aged well. Of course, that might be because he hardly used it for fifteen years.

That's not true. He's been on tour almost every year for the past 10 years.

This. nod

It's like Stevie Nicks. She doesn't have a technically great voice, but she doesn't sound like ANYBODY.

That being said, there was a Guns N' Roses concert on MTV WAY BACK IN THE DAY! Like, right around the time Appetite was released. They were skinny, dirty and CLEARLY hungry. The show was in a little tiny room and they were killin' it like they were already at a huge arena. I thought back then his voice was pretty spectacular. But just a couple years later it had already started to change.

The more recent tour that new band he's in (because that ain't Guns N' Roses) did was pretty solid, though. His voice sounded suprisingly good. He even commented on how well it working in a couple interviews.

I actually looked for anything from that show real quick but I didn't see it. I had it on VHS for about 20 years, but I finally let all of that stuff go a few years ago. I'll take a look at YouTube again - see if I can find anything.

Yeah, Axl sings live. That last tour is all over YouTube.
