It's odd that I'm Breathless isn't included. It's not a soundtrack at all so it should be included.

I suppose, but aside from Vogue, it's mostly an album of novelty records. Always on the fence about whether to include in my mega-eveything Madonna playlist for my iPhone.

Also, there could be licensing issues with Disney concerning the artwork and dialogue clips.

I'm still annoyed about the reaction to her appearance at that festival in Miami. She said: "How many people in this crowd have seen molly?"

Can anyone explain to me how that glamorizes, promotes and encourages drug use? Those are the verbs people are throwing around.

If I asked a crowd if anyone had seen water, I wouldn't be promoting water.

Madonna's New Album MDNA Is Turning Her Into A Techie
Back in the greed-is-good 1980s, Madonna styled herself as a material girl. Avarice hasn’t exactly disappeared in the intervening years, but the “Like A Prayer” singer has updated herself to fit the present zeitgeist, if the launch of new album MDNA is any indication.

For the album’s debut yesterday, Madonna decided to forgo the typical round of morning talk shows. She instead opted for an interview at Facebook’s New York headquarters, a live Twitter chat, and a giveaway on Spotify—two lucky listeners who play MDNA at least three times in the next two weeks will receive free tickets to one of her upcoming shows.

Madonna’s most unusual promotion, however, involves Fab.com. The nine-month-old design-focused retailer boasts 3 million members and has dedicated its homepage to MDNA, which it’s selling in both physical and digital format for $7.99, half the price of most other outlets.

“We’re on MDNA over here,” says Jason Goldberg, Fab’s founder and CEO. “It’s kind of our way of giving a big fat kiss to our members for how they’ve embraced us over the past nine months.”

It’s also a boon to Fab.com. Goldberg says his site is seeing two to three times its typical traffic because of the promotion, and expects to sell tens of thousands of copies of the album, which should move hundreds of thousands of units on the whole.

Goldberg wouldn’t discuss the details of his agreement with Universal Music Group, parent company of Interscope, the label that’s home to Madonna. But he did confirm that there was a “collaboration” of some sort.

What’s the nature of that collaboration? Hard to say for sure, but it probably means that Universal gave Fab.com a discount on the wholesale price of the record—like they did with Amazon and Lady Gaga’s Born This Way. A source told me that the Amazon negotiated to pay a wholesale price of $7 for the album, which the online retail giant briefly sold for $0.99.

If Fab.com is paying the same price for MDNA, it’s a great deal for everyone involved: Madonna and her label sell tens of thousands of additional albums to an audience they might not have otherwise reached, while Goldberg’s site gets a marginal profit and a boatload of additional web traffic.

Says Goldberg: “It’s a match made in heaven.”

Just like a prayer.

MADONNA’S MATERIAL GAINS

New MDNA Album Debuts on Top, Richie, Shinedown Debut

March 28, 2012

She’s no longer “Like a Virgin,” or even the Material Girl, for that matter, but Madonna is still a pop diva superstar.

Madge’s Interscope debut, MDNA, her 12th studio album and first under a recently inked deal with Live Nation, is her first new collection in four years, since 2008’s Hard Candy. It’s a lock for #1 on next week’s HITS Album sales chart, with between 325-350k, beating that album’s 280k opening.

Those figures are based on one-day sales figures which our crack retail staff arrived at by throwing darts at a board. Take that, Soundscan!

Lionel Richie’s Mercury Nashville bow, Tuskegee, a collection of his greatest hits performed with country stars such as Blake Shelton, Jason Aldean, Kenny Chesney, Rascal Flatts, Tim McGraw, Shania Twain, Willie Nelson and Jimmy Buffett, is the big surprise, with a robust first-week estimate in the 140-160k range. The album has even hit the #1 slot at iTunes over Madonna.

Veteran Atlantic Florida rockers Shinedown’s fourth studio album, Amaryllis, their first since 2008’s The Sound of Madness, is on track for first-week sales of 80-90k, easily topping that album’s 50k.

Hopeless’ The Used release Vulnerable, the Orem, UT, thrash-rockers’ fifth studio album and first since leaving their longtime label Warner Bros./Reprise, which looks to be in the 20-25k range.

Interscope’s veteran Oklahoma post-punks All-American Rejects’ fourth album, Kids in the Street, is slated to do between 17-20k, a striking comedown from their last, 2008’s When the World Comes Down, which did 112k its first week..

Prog-rocking Texas band The Mars Volta’s Noctourniquet, their sixth full-length album, and second from Warner Bros., is also in the 17-20k range.

Mercury/IDJ Canadian rock group My Darkest Days’ sophomore album, Sick and Twisted Affair, fueled by the hit single, “Porn Star Dancing,” should do between 12-15k

Album sales were down 3% vs. last week, down 16% vs. same week last year and up 1% year to date.

Track sales were up 2% vs. last week, up 3% vs. same week last year and up 6% year to date.

TEA sales were down 2% vs. last week, down 11% vs. same week last year and up 2% year to date.

Interview: Nicki Minaj On Madonna
By Miss Info | Mar 27, 2012 | 11:20 am
Madonna Kisses Nicki Minaj
If every great artist travels through different periods of expression, Nicki Minaj’s explosion into the mainstream may have been her “Barbie” phase. But sitting in a cramped Indianapolis hotel room two days before the Superbowl, Nicki is going through a “Marilyn” moment. In “Marilyn Monroe,” a song off her sophomore album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, Nicki sings of the Hollywood starlet’s tortured beauty. “It’s like all the good things,” she says. “They fall apart ”

Months after recording that song, when Nicki shows up at Madonna’s “Gimme All Your Luvin’” video set, she’s faced with three Marilyn wigs and dresses for Madonna, M.I.A. and herself. (She celebrated her 29th birthday at the December 8th shoot, complete with champagne, cupcakes, and a kiss from Madonna). It’s enough to rock even the most self-possessed chick in rap back on her heels....

Interview by Miss Info (@MissInfo)

Miss Info: How was that "Gimme All Your Luvin" video shoot?
Nicki Minaj: It was kinda trippy ’cause I didn't know that was the plan. I definitely didn’t realize all of us were going to be dressing up as Marilyn... Madonna kept on calling it the bar scene... I just didn’t think it was that shot with us three dressed as Marilyn, like I didn’t mentally prepare for that.

When I saw Madonna, she really to me was Marilyn Monroe and it was very surreal because it’s like, I almost felt like I was doing a video with my two idols at the same time.

When I walked on set and saw Madonna, I literally gasped because I felt like I was looking at Marilyn Monroe and I’m so obsessed with Marilyn Monroe… Like, I have Marilyn Monroe pictures all over my house.

She had these distant, sort of like very dreamy eyes like Marilyn, like kind of distant but very there and very in charge—but almost like in their own world. And it was just so surreal, you know, just to walk downstairs and see her standing there. I was just like, Wow.

Did you learn anything else from working with Madonna?

I think that when she started, she was mentally where I am now. Feeling like, “if people would just leave me alone and let me do me, they’ll see the great things that I have to offer.” Right before I met her, I watched her documentary Truth or Dare, and because of that, I felt so connected to her when we got in the studio. Madonna’s the only humongous artist I ever worked with that actually sat with me in the studio.

Everything else these days, all these big collaborations are all done via email… No face time, right?

Yeah! Madonna, she’s so hands-on and she’s so… confident. She knows what she wants but she does it with this crazy poise. She will diss you with poise. [Laughs]. We were drinking this champagne that I really love and she was like, “No, sweetheart, that’s dessert wine... In that glass? No.” We’re cracking up laughing because, “Wow, I’m being schooled by Madonna on what champagne to drink and what to drink it in.” But we had so much fun.

Madonna had me in the studio writing my rap, and she really listened to it and said, “Hmmm, you know what, is there a way you can incorporate such and such and such?” And I really changed it, and she loved it.

It’s not on “Gimme All Your Luvin,” this is on another song for her album. We’re like toasting to it, and I’m just looking at her like, “Yo, this lady is freaking amazing,” I mean outside of her being an icon. I’m talking about how...

Involved she was? And present?
100,000 percent involved. Did not leave the studio until it was done. I mean her children even came by after school. I was just like, that’s the epitome of who I want to be. If I can balance family and career then I win. Because I love children so much—I can’t hide that.

I used to think, how do people go through life and they’re like 50 years old and they didn’t have children but they’re still pursuing, they’re still trying to tour? So I saw that and I’m in awe of her.

Madonna's 'MDNA' Set for No. 1 Debut on Billboard 200; Lionel Richie Also Big

March 28, 2012
By Keith Caulfield (@keith_caulfield), Los Angeles (Billboard)

Madonna's 12th studio album, "MDNA," is on course to easily debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart next week. Industry sources suggest the set could sell between 300,000 to 350,000 copies by the end of the tracking week on Sunday, April 1.

If "MDNA" lands atop the list, it will mark the queen of pop's eighth No. 1 album and her fifth consecutive studio set to debut in the penthouse. Her last studio album, 2008's "Hard Candy," started at No. 1 with 280,000 sold according to Nielsen SoundScan.

The new Billboard 200 chart's top 10 will be revealed on the morning of Wednesday, April 4.

Madonna's first No. 1 came on the Billboard 200 chart dated Feb. 9, 1985, when her second album, "Like a Virgin," began a three-week run at the top.

"MDNA's" first week will be bolstered by a successful album sales promotion involving Madonna's upcoming world tour. U.S. customers who bought a concert ticket also had the option of also receiving "MDNA" as part of their purchase. The only sales that will count towards Billboard's charts are those where the customer opted to receive the album.

This sort of ticket/album promotion has been used in the recent past by such acts as Bon Jovi and Tom Petty. The latter's "Mojo" album saw a No. 2 debut on July 3, 2010 -- thanks to a fair number of customers who got the album via a ticket purchase. The same goes for Bon Jovi's 2007 No. 1 album "Lost Highway."

Switching gears away from Madonna for a moment. She won't be the only big news on the Billboard 200 next week.

Lionel Richie is poised to notch his best sales week since SoundScan started tracking sales in 1991 and his highest charting album since 1986.

His country collaborations album "Tuskegee" is looking at a No. 2 debut with maybe 125,000 to 150,000 sold. The album collects many of Richie's best-known hits, but he has re-recorded them with an army of country stars. Among the luminaries: Shania Twain ("Endless Love"), Blake Shelton ("You Are"), Kenny Chesney ("My Love") and Tim McGraw ("Sail On").

The last time Richie was in the top two was October of 1986, when "Dancing on the Ceiling" spent two weeks at No. 1.

Richie is also benefitting from a partnership with the Home Shopping Network (HSN), where the singer appeared during an hour-long special on March 16. Universal Music Group, Richie's record company, says he sold 20,000 "Tuskegee" albums during the show. (Those sales will count towards the album's debut week, as they were not fulfilled to the customer until this week.)

Here's a flashback for you. When was the last time Madonna and Richie were in the top five at the same time on the Billboard 200? Way back on Oct. 4, 1986, when "Dancing on the Ceiling" was No. 1 for a second week and Madonna's former No. 1, "True Blue," was No. 5.

Madonna Luvin’ and not Leavin: Bilboard Dance/Club Play Charts
Madonna’s legend on Billboard’s Dance/Club Play Songs chart grows this week, as “Give Me All Your Luvin’,” featuring Nicki Minaj and M.I.A., rises 2-1 to become her 41st leader on the list. She pulls further ahead of runner-up Janet Jackson, who’s banked 19 toppers.

The coronation adds yet another honor to Madonna’s illustrious chart history.

If we include the Material Girl’s leading entries on other active, current-based, domestic Billboard charts, her chart-topping total swells to a whopping and even 150 No. 1s.

Here are Madonna’s No. 1 sums on the following lists:

41, Dance/Club Play Songs
33, Hot Dance Singles Sales

15, Hot Singles Sales
12, Billboard Hot 100
9, Radio Songs
9, Music Video Sales
7, Billboard 200
7, Dance/Mix Show Airplay
5, Adult Contemporary
3, Internet Albums
2, Digital Albums
2, Digital Songs
2, Hot Digital Tracks
1, Pop Songs
1, Dance/Electronic Albums
1, Tastemaker Albums

Mirroring the tempo of so many of her hits, when it comes to topping Billboard charts, Madonna doesn’t appear to be slowing down.

She could reign again soon on Dance/Club Play Songs, where “Girl Gone Wild” bounds 46-20 as the chart’s Greatest Gainer, indicating potential for the track to become Madonna’s 42nd No. 1 on the tally within weeks.

And, this week’s release of the Material Girl’s 12th studio album of new material, “MDNA,” could lead to No. 1 arrivals on multiple surveys the following week.
