Brand X

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Sometimes we 4get how great a musician Phil Collins really is. As great as Genesis and his solo work is, I heard that Brand X was another world.

Yep, some people think he only does adult contemporary like Separate Lives. Some say he "ruined" Genesis when he became the lead singer too.

I don't see how he "ruined" anything when he had a hand in writing some of Genesis' best music. lol If they kept doin albums like Lamb and By The Pound, if YES kept doin Close To The Edge, Rush with 2112, ELP with Trilogy, etc etc they wouldn't have been able 2 be as sucsessful as they were. I think "Progressive" music is more than just psuedo-intellectual lyrics and long drum/keyboard/guitar solos all the time. That shit's cool, but as Gregg Allman said, you gotta have a landmark in your jam or else it's just a bunch of drivel. The mark of all the great bands is bein able 2 write great songs with hooks and melodies and Phil is one of the best at that.

^^The folks complaining make it sound like Phil is the only person in the group. From what I understand, after Anthony Phillips left, Tony Banks was more of an influence to Genesis' sound than anyone else.

I heard the same, Phil Collins is a fantastic drummer as mentioned. And even his soft rock stuff is well made & produced...

Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

I think Tony was part of the reason Peter and Steve left.

Funny that you guys are here talking about Phil and Genesis... I've been on a HUGE Genesis kick while getting ready to see The Musical Box do The Lamb in May. I am partial to the Peter Gabriel years (and Trick Of The Tail)... but, I also have the utmost respect for Phil Collins. To be that level of an instrumentalist AND be a hit singer/songwriter is quite an accomplishment. Someone hinted at it above...even Phil's most Poppy work is done at such a high level of professionalism. Love it! Oh yeah... Listening to Unorthodox Behaviour and Googling some Brand X history is what bought me to this thread.
