Sister Rosetta Tharpe Documentary

I'm throwing myself into this lady's music these days, and I loved everything I heard so far.

Wow. Just seeing this. She sure played some mean guitar. I watched a clip of her a while back singing "Down by the Riverside".

Queen of the Gibson SG Custom.

Not sure if this is in the documentary...

If not, it should be.
At around the 1:25 mark all hell/heaven breaks loose.

Her guitar playing is SO moving and so distinctive.

The moment I got hooked was when I watched Charles Burnett's To Sleep With Anger, the opening credit with her singing Precious Memories hit me like a brick. She recorded this song SO many times, I finally found it in an album she recorded later in her career titled as the same song, I was FLOORED, esp by the last song in the album; This Train.

I could hear this plucking anywhere now, and I'd know who played it.

Guitar Player did a wonderul write up about Sister Tharpe two years ago. If I can retrieve the article from my digital subcription, I'll send it you Harle. Take a close listen to her guitar playing, some of the earlyist chords... building blocks of Rock & Roll guitar.

Ms Trina, those links are not opening for some reason.

Stumbled on this Carnegie Hall performance from 1938(Why did folks lie about Lady Day being the 1st black artist to perform there? eek) Anyway, only her guitar and Albert Ammons' piano, PERFECT combination and it sounded like a whole band. I've been playing the hell outta this set lately,,,,

A gospel, rock and roll, soul, blues, female rock, pioneer right here... and she wasn't even trying. That guitar didn't come from "the devil". lol
