Olivia: The Smartest Singer Alive!

Any fan of the trashy reality show Love and Hip Hop, the show that focuses on the world of hip hop from the female perspective, knows all too well who Olivia is. She of hit single "Biz-ounce" fame, back in her G-Unit days, is now label-less and struggling to get another deal.

Though Olivia might be the most unnecessary artist in quite some time, the season of the show ended with her turning down her manage for a 3-album deal. Her manager begged and pleaded. She refused to be locked into a deal that would have her tied up in limbo for the foreseeable future.

Though she gets flack for thinking she's more talented then she actually is, and the show seems to make great pains to show that Olivia isn't digging deep enough for her art (Please. She's a pop/R&B singer in 2012. All she needs to do is show up) I say kudos to her for not accepting a 3-album, 360 deal. It's something I felt people on this forum would get behind despite the fact that Olivia tends to disappear right in front of your eyes unless you fight to pay attention.

I don't watch reality television, so I have no idea of what love & hip-hop is. It sounds like it would be a title to a followup movie to "Brown Sugar". I'm thinking of the recurring line in the movie "I first fell in love with hip-hop when..."

Anyway, I know that Olivia started out at the same time Alicia Keys did. We discussed it on this site years ago. I may even have started a thread on it but I don't remember. Olivia has credits on her first album for playing guitar and keyboards and she's a solid vocalist, although her songs leave something to be desired in the way of subject matter. When Clive backed her and Alicia, the idea was to put them both out there and see which one would float. I think he was thinking that because rap was so hot, Alicia might not be edgy enough for the market, so he had Oliva to cover those bases. She never seemed like a stupid chick from the jump (until she hooked up with G-Unit); she just caught a real tough break after Alicia rose to popularity and Clive just seemed to dump her and stop backing her record. That's the business.

No sane artist would take a 360 deal if they knew what it entailed.

Kind of reminds me of the old Tiearra Marie (sp?) / Rihanna thing back when Jay-Z on Pres. of Def Jam.

Never knew Olivia actually played instruments.

I thought this was about Olvia Newton John. I've never heard of this person.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Think of a 360 deal as a circle with u in the middle. There is NO WAY OUT.

Unless you sign to an indie, you'll only get 360 deals with major labels. Most of the time anyways. Olivia was doomed from day one anyway, first being in J Records the same time Alicia Keys signed, and then being with G-Unit, I knew the G-Unit deal wasn't gonna work out either.

360 deals are the only deals NEW ARTISTS are getting. You can circumvent them if you can gain some success on your own (by any means necessary, of course)

Yeah it was both things, then moving to G Unit but prior doing the "Candy Shop" single, now granted she is a sexy woman, but if you gonna play it that way from the start dont expect to get taken seriously or be forced into that corner. I actually dug Olivia somewhat, but the whole thing at J was wrong, because it was like we got Alicia now lets cash in which another chick that is not quite that talented and ride the wave, well it crashes as do everyones waves.

As for the Teairra Mari deal that someone mentioned before, that was slightly different because she got scumbagged, it wasnt a case of talent because between T and Rihanna, T is a far better singer but her issue is what plagues Amerie at labels, she has a mind of her own. T wasnt playing the game and got the gate, or pushed to the side like a Rosie Gaines project would with Prince. But to me T is better off now, shes indie has more work out with her mixtapes (6 to date) and tons of videos way more interesting than Rihanna or anything else Jay Z has done. And as for Olivia stay indie, thats where it is now if you are an RB female, trust me, except for Beyonce and Rihanna, they are all going that route, they are tired of it.

That's some double echo in here.

It's worth noting that all three female artist on this show are all indie:

Tierra Marie

Somaya Reece

Olivia

Okay, I'm NEVER gonna watch this show but why are Olivia and Tierra Mari on a show about hip-hop? I know they both rap a little bit but they are singers.

Yeah I'm ashamed to say I watch this but it's the ULTIMATE excuse of a guilty pleasure.

It follows the exploits of legendary hip hop legend JIM JONES and his loud-mouthed, opinionated girlfriend Chrissy, a jealous, manipulative woman who apparently used to be quite the gangsta chick back in the day. Olivia is a friend of Chrissy and Jims. That, plus her past affiliation with G-Unit I guess explains her loose connection to hip hop.

Emily is the secret girlfriend passing off as stylist to legendary hip hop artist Fabulous. Tierra Marie is her friend. That, plus her past affiliation with Jay Z explains her loose connection to hip hop.

Somaya Reece is an unnecessary addition to hip hops legacy. She is a presence though, an amazonian, fiery latina who is easily 6 ft. in heels.

Oh they also fight alot. And anything like glass or utensils have been banned from shooting.

I know this is the silliest s**t on TV.

I think Olivia has a nice voice and all but she is nothing special. She doesn't have that fire like Fantasia or the passion of a Jill Scott or Angie Stone. She lacks the pop appeal and sultryness of a Beyonce or Rihanna. I watch the show and even though Liv is hot on YT and Twitter and she looks good, she still wreaks of G-Unit. Really, most people know her first as 50 Cent's video girlfriend and back up singer. Sure it sucks but this is the risk you take of rolling with the rappers. Just ask Ashanti.

Because their image is hip hop. Liv has that G-Unit connection and I forget what rapper Tierra was bouncing off of. Let me also say that Tierra can't hold a candle to Liv as far as her vocals go. Never thought Mz Mari could sing. She just eye candy for kneegrows that need glasses.

well most labels on anything are wrong, i havent watched the show, but i hear people get all in an uproar over the SCRIPTED reality show! Heard someone the other day talk about meaning Erica Meena ? if thats her name and they acted like they were meeting an icon like Madonna or Janet or Aretha or some talented relevant person. WOW has the bar been LOWERED in all forums, this chick makes Kim Kardashian look like the smartest person on earth. But like u were saying have no clue why the title is what it is, on the SOmaya tip she has been doing the indie thing ground up when it wasnt cool, remember checking into her about a decade ago, so props on her dedication regardless of her talent.

All of them suck ass as well. They will NEVER make it which is the sad reality that they just don't want to face. Nobody is interested when we have enough talentless pretty chicks in the game as it is.
