The Queen of Soul had this to say about the Matriarch of R&B:

She was one of the great soul singers of our generation. An American original!

"I loved 'Pushover,' 'At Last' and almost any and everything she recorded! When Etta SUNG, you heard it!

Etta James's Son Describes Her Final Moments

January 21, 2012

Link

Recalling his mother,R&B legend Etta James, and her final moments, son Donto James tells People magazine he's happy he and his brother, Sametto, got to hold her in their arms and say goodbye.

"It's been quite a day, Donto, 43, said Friday, the day Etta, 73, died from complications of leukemia, "but I'm very grateful. She basically passed in my arms, and I was able to share everything I needed to say to her, from praying to listing her accomplishments as a mother."

The goodbyes were delivered at a Riverside, Calif. hospital, where Etta James was taken Thursday night. Donto says his mother couldn't speak but seemed to understand what he was telling her.

"I asked her if she heard what I said, and she'd flutter her eyes and look at me very quickly. And she had been nonreactive before that," he says.

Donto describes the moment as "spiritual," and although he'd long dreaded seeing his mother die, he now believes "it was a true gift to be with her when it happened. I wouldn't want it any other way than for her to go in our arms."

He adds, "I told her that I loved her. I said, 'You were a wonderful mother, you did a wonderful job, your seven grandchildren love you, and they will be okay.' "

In a final tribute, he also says, "For sure, the world lost a legend today. I am very proud of her, and very thankful."

What was cool about her is she never went all religiousy like Al Green and Prince and others. She stayed dirty, nasty, but classy. She understood that music should be crunk.

She is the true queen of soul. Outsings Aretha Franklin any day of the week.

She wouldn't want us to mourn, so I bet when she went to heaven to told Amy Winehouse, "move over bitch, mama is home."

I couldnt agree more. I saw her in concert in 2009 at Pridefest here in Milwaukee. She was in a wheelchair, but you better believe she was still getting it! Wish I had taken pictures! May she RIP!

I'm in the mood for love...simply because your near me.

In one way, I'm sorry that Etta James passed and in another, I'm not. I'm sorry that the world lost such a great Voice and Talent too soon but I'm not sorry that her suffering is over. My mother had Alzheimer's and I don't wish that kind of suffering on anyone...plus Etta's other illnesses. May you sing in heaven forever, Etta! rainbo

When I awoke the morning of January 20, 2012, I was very tired. Still half asleep, I placed my iPod on the dock in the bathroom. I must have (accidentally) hit random and “Down on the Street” by Etta James came on. I have been marathoning her albums on my headphones and hadn’t gotten to this album yet (Come A Little Closer).
When I heard that sick bass line I already knew I had heard this song before. I also knew that it was Etta. This was my first time hearing the album version. The place where I first heard it was at her House of Blues concert on June 30, 2002. I had missed her previous show as I was not yet 21. I was working at the Art Institute and the receptionist bragged that she was going to the concert. I perked up as I was a huge fan, but it turned out she knew very little about her. I remember thinking she didn’t deserve to go. If I was just a little older I could go too. I had to look forward and I vowed to see her next time.
Somewhere around that time I had read her (aptly titled) autobiography Rage To Survive and picked up her compilation Love Songs. The one-two punch of these made me a devoted fan. The life that she had been through was very tough. Reading about her hardships and the way she overcame them was inspiring. In particular, the difficult and destructive relationship she had with her mother. I first knew of Etta from the Rolling Stone Women in Rock book. Most of my favorites of the time were in there and I read the whole thing. There was a chapter on Etta and Ruth Brown. Reading about them made me want to hear their music and voices.
It was announced that Etta would be returning for a Chicago show. Thankfully, it was a month after my required birthday. I bought two tickets and took my mother. The concert was one of the most special evenings we ever shared. She wouldn’t let me take her to dinner, insisting the show was enough. I was now an adult and out on my own. I was sorting a lot of things out in my mind and life. I wanted to have a good relationship with her. Moments like that make me wish I had a photographic or videographic memory.
Etta was announced, the curtain was drawn and there she was. She was wearing a sparkly pantsuit and was (to quote John Waters) “big, blonde and beautiful.” She was still donning that bad ass cat’s eye make-up. It seems she had some health issues as she was in a barber type chair the whole time. She still had that powerful voice! The one that sounds like it was going to disintegrate mics on some of her recordings. The show was way better than I expected. I could not believe I was even in her presence. Here was a woman who was recording and rocking in the 1950’s. A living legend that made great music! She recorded some of the most passionate love songs that have (still) ever been heard. It really is a shame that most might only know “At Last” (Obviously a beautiful song but this being her “one song” makes me not like it as much). I’m more into “Sunday Kind of Love” and “My Dearest Darling.” However, I cannot stand the idea of ANYbody else trying to sing it.
There was a poignant moment when she dedicated “Sugar On The Floor” to her recently departed “mother.” She said that it was her favorite song. It was very intense, sad and long(ing). I loved it. There was also a raunchy moment during “I’d Rather Go Blind.” She used the mic in a phallic gesture telling her man she missed his…
It was unexpected and quite surprised me!
The day she passed away I went to my mom’s office during my break to meet my new nephew. I forgot what context it was in, but I was being an ass and singing “I’d Rather Go Blind” (I was NOT making fun of the song). When I got back to my office, my boss gave me the news a little while later. He walked past my desk and said “Etta James died.” I wish I hadn’t known at that moment. It really upset me and made me sad. I started to cry. Etta was in my thoughts that day already. I knew she had been ill and suffering for a while. There was something supernatural about that song playing when I was getting ready that morning. I thank you Etta for that perfect night I will never forget. I still have and treasure my autographed CD.
If you are uninitiated / unconvinced, I highly recommend starting with The Chess Box.

She put the blues in R&B and leaves behind a defining legacy...... may she Relax In Paradise. I hope they do a worthy tribute to her at the Grammys with Faith Evans, Jill Scott, Christina Aguilera and a few others who were influenced by her raw greatness.

I really need to delve into her discography.... my dad said she was like the female Ray Charles with that she dabbled in everything and proved that African Americans are more than just negro spirituals and session players. cool

Adele Blogs Tribute To The Late Etta James

Adele Blogs Tribute To The Late Etta James

January 23, 2012

Sad news broke a few days ago when we reported that soul singer Etta James had died, at age 73, after a joint battle with leukemia and dementia. Now Adele, the enormous British voice that owned most of 2011, has made a post on her website about her love of James and seeing her live in New York City.

In it she calls the singer, whose 74th birthday would have been this Wednesday (Jan. 25), "the ultimate original."

You can read Adele's touching post below.

What a lady Etta James was. She was the ultimate original. Her voice was breath taking and her songs are reflections we all recognise in some way or another. Its an honour every time I hear her voice.

I saw her at BB Kings in New York a few years ago, and it was something I will remember forever. Thank you to Etta James. And i send all my love to her family and friends . xxxx

Etta James, the singer who turned "At Last" into a multi-generational standard, is gone not long after her voice was quieted. James died on Friday at the age of 73.

Beyonce, Adele Pay Tribute to Etta James

The timeless voice of Etta James has inspired countless listeners for decades, and following her passing today, her vocal successors are paying tribute.

The late, great Etta James makes a powerful impact on the Billboard charts this week, following her death on Jan. 20.

On the Billboard 200 chart, she nets her highest-charting album ever as "The Best of Etta James - 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection" rises from No. 162 to No. 46 with 8,000 sold (up 149% over the previous week) according to Nielsen SoundScan. Until this week, the R&B/blues legend had never gone higher than No. 68, when "At Last!" rose to that position in 1961.

Etta James Dies at 73 | Honoring Etta: 7 Ve... 'At Last'

For the week ending Sunday, Jan. 22, James' overall catalog of albums sold 30,000 copies. That marks a 378% increase over the previous week, when her collected albums moved just over 6,000 units.

James also debuts on the Billboard 200 at No. 59 with the 1997 hits collection "Her Best" (7,000; up 4,226%) and re-enters at No. 96 with the aforementioned "At Last!" (5,000; up 907%).

Her famed single "At Last" was her best-selling song of the week as well. It shifted 63,000 downloads, enabling its re-entry at No. 29 on the Digital Songs chart, with a weekly gain of 1,361%. "At Last" is one of James' 26 charting hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart -- it rose to a peak of No. 47 on Feb. 11. 1961. Though she's had higher-charting Hot 100 singles, "At Last" is arguably her signature recording -- even though she wasn't the first to sing it.

For the week, James' catalog of songs sold 118,000 downloads (more than half of that were "At Last's" sales) -- for an overall gain of 1,091% compared to last week.

Meanwhile, on the Billboard Hot 100 chart this week, James' voice continues to be heard on two different hits -- by way of a sample.

Her 1962 Hot 100 hit "Something's Got a Hold on Me" (which peaked at No. 37) is woven into both Avicii's "Levels" (No. 68) and Flo Rida's "Good Feeling" (No. 3).
