Plush (1982)
Àngela Winbush is a “three-hyphen” musician – producer- arranger-composer-performer – who had a big impact on Urban Contemporary charts in the late 80s, originally as part of the duo René and Àngela, and is still around today. She creates enveloping tracks (either moody and introspective or lively and bouncy) with layers of keyboards, gorgeous melodic hooks and lush vocals. She has a powerful voice, an exceptional range and a unique style – she started out as a backup singer for Stevie Wonder among others. Lyrically, she writes nothing but love songs, but with real feeling and originality, never trite. She’s one of a handful of women in her generation – along with Patrice Rushen and Brenda Russell – who produced not only their own material but also other artists’, working extensively with, among others, the Isley Brothers (she was married to Ronald Isley for most of the 90s).

Watson, Moore and Winbush produced the debut for this group, sort of a Shalamar clone made up of Siedah Garrett, Tony Phillips and Ambrose Price II. Rene & Angela didn’t push themselves too hard for new material: “Free And Easy” and “Strangers Again” are recycled from their own debut album. Two songs were written by band members, “Gonna Get Ya” and “Living For Your Love.” Generally it’s midtempo grooves, soothing and not particularly distinctive (“I Don’t Know”; “We Got The Love” – both Garrett leads), occasionally showing the buzzing synths that would be more prominent on future releases (“Burnin’ Love,” the single). The same year, the team also produced half of Janet Jackson’s debut.

Nick Ashford was someone I greatly admired, had the honor of knowing, and was the real-life inspiration for Cowboy Curtis' hair. RIP Nick. - Pee Wee Herman

Don't know what's going on with BBR and Funkytowngrooves, but both companies are now going to release "Into The Night" by Cheryl Lynn. Why?? Especially since it's already out on cd, a (pricey) single disc from Japan and on a two-fer.

And BBR are releasing "Niecy" by Deniece Williams soon, another questionable release as it was done beautifully by Reel Music in 2010 (remastered from the master tapes and not brickwalled) AND is also still available on a two-fer cd.

These companies should focus on material that has never been out on CD (like the first two Rene & Angela albums!) instead of these duplicate releases and/or albums that are still readily available on CD!

Man, that's indeed a big miss. That remix is a mutha! Burned it on some previous mixtapes, along with the extended version of "I Simply Like" with that mean bass.

But i can see the possible reason why the "Tie Me Up" remix was left out, although very unfortunate.

Both companies are competing against each other, which, unfortunately, sometimes ends up in them releasing duplicate titles. As I stated earlier, those Cheryl Lynn titles have been reissued multiple times already (her entire catalog was just reissued in Japan for the second time last year) so I'm not sure why funkytowngrooves and BBR decided to flood the market with more of them. And, as far as I can tell, the bonus tracks are not any different from what we got last year. As far as "Niecy" is conerned, Reel Music did a great job with the remastering and the essay but the artwork reproduction was HORRIBLE!!!! Very dark and muddy. I have the original Japan reissue and there is an obvious difference in the quality of the artwork.

So far, I've been more impressed with funkytowngrooves because they seem to be more successful with getting titles out there that are not already available. They are listening to us. It's just that certain titles are more easier to license than others. The labels tend to drag their feet a little more when it comes to the more sought-after titles.

As far as the Rene & Angela titles are concerned, it hasn't been announced but they are coming!!!!

Totally agree with everything you wrote.Still many old lps not on cd but what might make you happy is that Expansion Records is to release Rene&Angela`s first two lps on a twofer cd,they are also doing L.J. Reynolds two Capitol lps as a twofer.

I agree. It's funny to me when both of these labels release the same album lol This is what happened with the Andre Cymone 'AC' remaster. And like you said, they should focus on *rare* albums that have never been on CD before.

I don't know if this is worth it for this. I just got the Feel The Fire collection that has this album included.

That was another pointless BBR release IMO as the two disc Fell The Fire set is great and has the same tracks except for the single edits...

Just like the white winged dove...
