“I Want My Name Back” Exploring Identity Theft Of Members From The Sugarhill Gang
Making its official premiere at the documentary film festival DOC NYC, taking place now, is the revealing documentary I Want My Name Back, a film spotlighting the identity theft struggles of members of the old school rap group The Sugarhill Gang.
Directed by Roger Paradiso, the film chronicles their journey as they try to reclaim their identities as the original group members.
Here’s a brief synopsis:
Whatever happened to The Sugarhill Gang? After scoring a mega-hit with “Rapper’s Delight,” the band’s creative leaders Master Gee and Wonder Mike became the victims of nightmare contracts. They lost their income and even their names. Twenty-five years later, they set out to reclaim their identities and place in hip-hop history, going up against ruthless adversaries in the music business.
The film screens November 5th and 8th. Go HERE for more info and ticket purchase.
I read on what was going on on Jayquan's site Tha Foundation, they basically were robbed! Fuck Big Bank Hank by the way.
What's wrong with Hank?
He's performing with the fakes instead of the real guys. Apparently he and some former associates of theirs, probably in relation to Sugarhill Records, fought for usage of the name after Wonder Mike and Master Gee kept performing under the name and they won the right to it so Wonder Mike and Gee were forced to call themselves Rapper's Delight. And remember this is the guy that was handpicked by Sylvia Robinson to rap. Hank was a bouncer for rap legend Grandmaster Caz, who as we all know (or should know by now) was the lyricist behind Hank's verses. Hank ain't nothing but a fraud. Great rap voice but a fraud.
