MAYER HAWTHORNE SIGNS TO UNIVERSAL REPUBLIC RECORDS

MAYER HAWTHORNE SIGNS TO UNIVERSAL REPUBLIC RECORDS

Album HOW DO YOU DO Due in US Stores This Fall
Universal Republic Records excitedly declares the signing of alternative soul impresario and critical darling, Mayer Hawthorne. His full-length debut for the label, How Do You Do, will hit US shelves and digital retailers this fall, and the buzz single "A Long Time," was released digitally on May 24th.

Listeners will be introduced to Hawthorne via the intoxicating and seductive sounds of "A Long Time." The singer's voice instantly transports listeners back to the golden age of soul but with a slick modern kick. He's got a refined, timeless style reminiscent of Smoky Robinson and Curtis Mayfield mixed with a forward-thinking sound.

The Ann Arbor, MI native released his self-produced independent debut, A Strange Arrangement, in 2009. A limited-edition 7" heart-shaped vinyl of the single "Just Ain't Gonna Work Out"/"When I Say Goodbye" was pressed and –combined with the traditional digital single— exceeded sales of 50,000 copies while critics everywhere began embracing his unique flavor and flare. Mayer Hawthorne’s stellar debut was included in Entertainment Weekly's "Best-Of" 2009 issue, and he was also chosen as one of Playboy's breakout artists of 2009.

Now, anticipation continues to mount for How Do You Do as tastemakers, celebrities, and fans alike unanimously sing Hawthorne's praises.

Rolling Stone wrote, "Hawthorne emerges with a jaw-dropping collection of classic soul," while Perez Hilton couldn't contain his excitement exclaiming, "We love, love, love it." Other acclaim has come from Spin.com, Esquire.com, Detroit Free Press, and Exclaim! He's also Snoop Dogg's "favorite new artist", and Kanye West, Justin Timberlake, and John Mayer have all taken to Twitter to proclaim their adoration.

Mayer Hawthorne hit the road this spring with Bruno Mars and Janelle Monae with a performance at Lollapalooza 2011 planned for August. His live show has already won the hearts of audiences everywhere including famed festivals such as, SXSW, Coachella, Bonnaroo, Outside Lands, Austin City Limits, and more.

With How Do You Do set for release, Hawthorne is about to give the 21st century some real soul.

His voice has improved, to be fair. It was absolutely appalling when he first came out. But, like so much retro stuff, the songs are crap compared to the classics that they try to ape. Style over substance.

Kudos to Mr. Hawthorne! A Strange Arrangement and the Impressions EP stay in constant rotation. Excited about the new album and the "A Long Time" single is just blissful. Let's just hope Universal doesn't water him down...pray

I know he's good friends with Snoop and a few other rappers but I hope that his new CD doesn't feature a bunch of rappers and guest artists pray A Strange Arrangement was such a great album because it was soulful and unpretentious with no hip-hop elements.

If based only on the song within this thread, he sounds like a flat soda Michael McDonald with a sore throat.

His falsetto is not very good..... maybe that was too kind a comment compared to what some of you others have been saying. 'Specially that last comment about him sounding like a flat soda Michael McDonald. lol

I like his voice but I prefer his 'normal' singing voice,as opposed to the falsetto.

This song has a "Curtis-Mayfield-meets-Steely-Dan" vibe to it.....does anyone agree?

Agreed! It is so smooth and laidback, yet groove-based at the same time. Has that cool LA vibe to it as well.

Mayer Hawthorne: "The Walk"

3:55 p.m. · August 29, 2011 · by Andrew Martin /site_media/uploads/images/media/m/mayer-hawthorne/mayer-hawthorne-the-walk.jpg

After revealing some sharp album artwork last week, Mayer Hawthorne continues his #MayerMondays series with something far more riveting than what we can expect to see on the cover of How Do You Do. The Detroit native has released his next single from the album and oh man is it a doozy. Whereas lead single "A Long Time" was a swaying two-stepper, "The Walk" is a biting kiss-off anthem that features Hawthorne at his most aggravated.

He's been disappointed, depressed, and frustrated with love in the past, but it's never been quite as scathing as this. If you have ever been wronged by an ex-girlfriend or boyfriend, chances are you'll be playing the hell out of "The Walk" in the way you might have, say, blasted Cee-Lo Green's "Fuck You." Where Hawthorne's track differs, though, is in its more understated approach and not outright use of profanity.

You can stream the track at Hawthorne's website. It's out now on iTunes. How Do You Do drops Oct. 11.

It's good, I like it, but it's so retro, that you could put it back in time and no one would know the difference. How is it 2011? That's a problem w/ almost all music these days.

Never heard of him and I see why..... his vocals are ASS. No ma'am, yall can keep this bullshit. I'm not that desperate for oldies music. Raphael Saadiq, Adele, Amy Winehouse & Sharon Dapp do me just fine. neutral
