Marvin Gaye - Sanctified Pussy

I've really been on a Marvin kick these past few days.

I still cringe at Columbia Records cashing in by rush releasing an unfinished, underwhelming Marvin track. He would have no doubt disapproved of the entire album of outtakes from which it came.

Santafied Lady/Pussy is a damn good song. The album was horrible, though.

In 2011, there's no reason why they can't make it uncensored.

Even if it was a rush release & a cash grab, it prob. would've been pretty close to what Marvin would've put out in the mid 80s. Nowadays, you'd have a name producer working on it. You have to remember even after he put out "Sexual Healing", he was still having a lot of problems.

nod This is a slammin' cut, but Dream of a Lifetime wasn't one of the best. Worthy cuts on that release though!

I remember my mom wore the Midnight Love vinyl out and played this song all the time. I still love "Rocking After Midnight". I didn't realize until a few years ago that he said "I like to lick the coochie coo" in that song LOL

LOL yeah I was taken aback myself but actually giggled because I realize this was how Marvin rolled anyway. He was probably the only R&B artist of his generation to admit he loved eating pussy! lol

LOL OK so I'm not the only one who noticed that. Funny thing is is use to sing that song when I was 9 and had no clue what I was singing LOL. I was bugged-eyed when I finally Listened to the lyrics and caught it a few years ago. I was so caught up in the synthesized sound and cadence of the song I didn't catch ALL the lyrics LOL

lol It's understandable. Marvin was very subtle though that you almost didn't get it until a few more listens and then go "OH!" lol

I watched this special on Marvin's life on PBS a few weeks ago and a lot of things that I didn't know was revealed. After seeing how he went off the deep end during the whole Sexual Healing era with those demons literally eating away at him, it made his death that more like it was a gift inside of a curse. You have this LEGEND and who IMHO is the King to Aretha's Queen, degrading himself by singing bullshit like Sanctified Pussy, being a sexual deviant and damn near naked on stage like some old deadbeat pimp after years of such genius and classy work. I rather him die and let his legacy remain intact than for him to continue making such bullshit that Trey Songz or Chris Brown wouldn't much sing and completely erasing everything he previously stood for.

I have never listened to any of his 80's music past Sexual Healing and I completely understand now. SMDH

R.I.P. Marvin.

I find most people just know him for Sexual Healing, and I was one of those people too for years until I got tired of mainstream in my late teens and was looking around.

I know of Marvin's 60's vocal prowess and his 70's artistic genius but Sexual Healing is the only 80's song I know by him.

You know Heard It Through the Grapevine right? And you must get the album with the Diana and Marvin duets, and the Midnight Love album. Surely, if one could handle Prince and Janet Jackson overdoing it with the promiscuity, how is it any different with Marvin? I guess it's cause of how his life was going at that time....

If you listen very carefully you can still hear him saying "Sanctified Pussy."

Prince and Marvin are 2 totally different artists with 2 totally different catalogs of music. confused

Prince was never a soul man or the vocalist that Marvin was. Prince has never tried to make an album like Whats Goin On nor does he have any song that is as definitive as I Heard It Through The Grapevine nor does he have any memorable duets. Prince is an artist that follows the beat of his own drum, a pioneer and a kickass musician. I don't know how Prince fits into thread but clearly he has no place here. Prince is known for prancing on stage in a g-string and stilettos singing Darling Nikki. Marvin is NOT. This is like Aretha singing about a nigga busting a nut all over her face like its Holy Water to a cheesy ass Cyndi Lauper beat. A hot ass mess.com

I love Marvin so there is no "of course I wouldn't be into".... I Want You (song) is my favorite Marvin song. I Want You (album) is in my top 10 of greatest albums ever made. Much love to Leon Ware as well. I have the original cd of Whats Goin On and the deluxe anniversary edition, 2 of his dvds and his tribute album with the likes of D'Angelo & Erykah Badu among his other work. You don't know me or my tastes so don't ASSume.

Funny we have the same favorite song and album by Marvin. I find it interesting that the subject matter of I Want You doesn't bother you. It's not as good a song, but I wouldn't say "Sanctified Lady" is any more vulgar than "Soon I'll Be Loving You Again." Not to mention all those background moans on "Since I Had You"...

Yeah, he had it really bad for Jan. Maybe she was the inspiration for "Santified Pussy" also? LOL!
