Lynyrd Skynyrd ~ Free Bird

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Great song... the first half always makes me sad, though...thinking about that '77 plane crash.

"That Smell" is another one of my favs... and pretty haunting as well.

After Duane Allman died, Skynyrd added that "tweet" coda, and made the song a dedication to Duane.

There was a rivalry between Ronnie Van Zant and Gregg Allman - Ronnie dated & married Gregg's ex.

Skynyrd in the day upstaged The Who on the Quadrophenia tour (the tapes broke down) and The Stones (Keith was completely out of it) at Knebworth.

One of the best live bands of their day, and rival GNR on being volatile on and off stage.

Always loved this song! I've learned to love it even more after watching the ending to The Devil's Rejects. evillol
