Within the next 20 years, does Taylor Swift have the potential to be on the level of Dolly Parton?

I once had two threads where I asked if Beyonce had done enough to finally get on Madonna's level. Most of you said no.

Now I have a thread concerning Taylor Swift and her future. Does this young lady have what it takes to make it to the same level of sucess of Dolly Parton within the next 20 years from 2011?

1. Both can sing.

2. Both can play the guitar.

3. Both can write lyrics & compose their own music (whenever they feel like it).

As of yet I dont think Taylor has shown the depth or the maturity of even Dolly's earliest works.

Dolly was overlooked early on and even later in the past decade when she continued amazing work. I dont think Taylor is in that caliber, she is maybe a Shania Twain Faith Hill type, but she has yet too show any real form of depth

Dolly's return to her bluegrass roots in the late 1990's, early 2000, are some her best work.

I think she has all the raw ingredients necessary for that to happen.

Good music makes me happy.

Dolly is actually not a guitar player. She is a gifted guitar player. And an amazing Banjo and Slide Guitar player. Yep, even with them nails.

Taylor does have the potential to have the success in record sales, perhaps. But with regard to artistic success and emotional resonance, I don't believe she will come within a country mile of tugging on Dolly's coat tails. And while I liked Taylor initially, she has given poor televised live performances each and every time I have seen her.

And as far as writing goes, everyone from Elvis to Whitney has been dying to record IWALY. Elvis did not record IWALY because when he asked Dolly to take a much smaller cut of the royalties because he was Elvis and she was just Dolly Parton - and she told him what he could do with his hunka hunka burning love. I really can't see any work by Taylor Swift having a reach like that.

^Dolly was asked to turn the song over to Elvis and give him writing credit, which was typical for the king, she refused.

I've never heard TS's music, but I think she'd need a bigger bra and build an amusement park to compete with Dolly. lol

Can you imagine standing your ground back in the day when NO ONE refused Elvis. It was unheard of. That's My Dollly.

Lazy, Tell 'em what she did for Porter and his publishing toward the end. It was a birthday gift, no?

She bought 'em. Porter was broke as a joke trying to pay all them bills. My understanding is that she stepped up and bought his catalog when not a whole lot of people were interesed in giving him a market value price for his little sack of songs. Later on she gave the catalog back to him on his birthday.

(I think that is accurate and is the story in a nut shell. Please let that be accurate, time is not always a friend to my memory. It was a while ago, but I recall it as Dolly telling the story.)

Maybe when she learns how to, actually, sing.

She sounds atrocious.

I was just shocked when I saw her at the 2010 grammys. That was the first time I heard her sing live and it was so awful... And she lacks stage presence too. And Taylor's recent music sounds like pure pop to me(at least the FEARLESS album did, I actually haven't listened to her latest alum), I don't know what really makes her a country artist. Well actually I really don't know how CMA gives out awards either...I know she writes her own songs and that's definitely a talent, but most of her songs just sound way to simple and similar to me.

Miranda and Carrie's records definitely have more country sound to it. Miranda often adds rock sound to her records and live shows which I absolutely love...and I love Carrie's strong voice...So yeah maybe Miranda or Carrie more than Taylor...

Sort it out. razz

Even if she was to get away from the highschool-isms and write a Come on Over type album -which wouldn't be a far cry from her present oeuvre to be honest- she still wouldn't touch DP in sales figures. Even if the aforementioned Shania album had been released this year it wouldn't sell nearly as much as it has.

To be honest, as long as her music remains on the level of teenage angst, she'll never reach the level of Shania even. Taylor's good for now but what will happen ten years down the line is a better question.
