The Sylvers: Unsung

Might as well post this because when Billy's episode came on last week, I almost forgot it. Usually I'd remember it whenever I do post about a new episode of "Unsung" so yeah back on my grind.

Anyway, let's see what they reveal - since to be honest, many know LITTLE of the Sylvers except a handful of people here (looking at you TD3 batting eyes ) but this should be good. popcorn tv

FIRST to respond...you all know I'm excited about tonight's episode. It's been highly anticipated and hopeful it will be one of the series' best episodes. My mom was a huge Sylvers/Jacksons fan back in the day, so she is excited as well.

I hope it's as good as DeBarge's episode tbh.

Yes I saw it on another thread here. Can't wait to see it. woot! I totally forgot all about this group, but I used to love the big afros they wore. I tell you when I look back at that era, at the natural hairdos, and how cool it was to wear it, and the clothes, just takes you on a journey back in time. So much going on back in those days, and music was on fire!

I have a feeling that it is gonna be a little better than that episode honestly. I mean, we all kind've knew about the substance abuse that brought DeBarge in a deep decline. But, it was disturbing to hear about the childhood demons, internal and external conflicts that were in the dynamic of that family.

The Sylvers, on the other hand, their story has not really been told.

That's why I'm kinda like "it'll be alright" but since it's NEVER been told, I'm actually excited too. smile

Though I admit I'm even MORE excited about Mary Wells. love I think she comes next week. tv

Oh we know TV One is not gonna get too in-depth, but it's going to be interesting just for the reason that not that many stories have been written on them! There was a 2007 article in Jet on them, but it was brief and vague. And personally, I am a Sylvers fan, so I'm just excited that their story and music is getting recognition.

Funny you said that! All they could say about Billy, image-wise, was his wide gap-toothed smile! lol

They better mention the afro beef between them and the Jacksons...We all know that the Sylvers won that hands down.

Edmund Sylvers (pictured above) was the lead singer of the group "The Sylvers." At age 47, he would succumb to lung cancer in 2004, following a 10-month illness. The Sylvers hits include: "Boogie Fever," and "Hot Line."

I didn't know he passed away!! Why is everything about them kept a secret?

eye will ALWAYS think of prince like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. eye mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that prince wasn't of this earth, eye would not have been that surprised. R.I.P. prince

Yep he died. I remember my mother being shocked at the news of his passing, as Ebony or JET revealed the story. So young and tragic! Here's a picture of him before his passing:

It's in the JET issue where the Sylvers' "Where Are They Now" tidbit was featured. He was alive then but he had this sad, forlorn face.

Me...I've been waiting for this one.

I cannot believe they kicked Leon to the curb because of that thieving manager...it's always the same story when people start getting the big head. sigh Then comes the drugs and alcohol.

I was also shocked hearing what happened to Olympia!

Another gorgeous and talented family hits the skids but I'm really happy that Leon continued to do well for himself.

Co-sign with everything here. Pretty good episode.

Interesting parts that stood out for me:

Olympia's illness and abuse
The group's struggle with disco/maintaining their artistic integrity
Record label troubles/Leon's departure
Al Ross and legal issues
Leon: "Ain't nobody tellin' me I ain't writing for my own group." lol
Drug and alcohol abuse among members of group, particularly Ricky and Foster

Those commercials annoyed the f**k outta me.
